Sharlto Copley talks District 9 sequel (or prequel) plans

Apr. 29, 2010by: Paul Tassi

So yes, it's true that Neil Bomkamp is doing another sci-fi project before returning to the world of DISTRICT 9, but according to star Sharlto Copley, he is definitely interested in revisiting that universe, which is convenient as the movie has the most obvious sequel set up I’ve ever seen. “I’ll see you in three years!”

Speaking to Empire, Copley elaborates on plans for more D9 films.

"Neil wants it and I want it. Neil's doing another film first. Then I think if everything goes according to plan we'll do the second film in about two years time. That story can go in so many different ways. There¹s a whole universe. I'm sure a lot of writers say that, but we actually have an entire universe.

"This thing started shooting in 2005, and before we shot the film we shot Alive In Joburg and two other shorts as part of Neil's creative development process. Those next two films actually had my character, Wikus, in them, although I wasn't called Wikus in them. So they were two parts of the development of the world and where the story was going to go and all that.

"There's a million ways you can go. Neil's actually very interested in prequels as well; he's said that a few times. We wouldn't do the traditional Hollywood version of the sequel which would just be 100 aliens fighting humans."

Prequel eh? I suppose I would be curious to know how exactly humanity managed to get sick of aliens after only what, thirty years? I think they’d still be pretty damn interesting at that point.

I’m down for anything, so long as we get to see more of those freaking awesome energy weapons.

Extra Tidbit: Man 2009 was a great year for sci-fi between D9, STAR TREK, MOON and AVATAR.

A prequel would just be stupid. The only part i liked about the movie was the alien dude blasting off in the end because then I was hoping to see some cool alien stuff in a sequel. But i hope it does get a sequel and it sucks and then they will reboot it and make it actually good

The only thing . . .

. . . that still bothers me about this otherwise brilliant film is the number of prawns. The mothership supposedly contains at least a million of them, and there are supposed to be close to two million at the time of the story. There's no WAY that mothership could have held that many beings, and the views of the District never give any credence to a population of two million. Not to mention the idea that MNU was going to go door-to-door to maybe a MILLION different shanties for eviction? In one

The story would have been just as good if these numbers were in the thousands instead of millions.

It's just cruel to set up a sequel like that but instead of releasing a sequel, they release a prequel. I'm all down for a prequel at some point, but can we please finish this story line first??

Why won't anyone do a straight up sequel anymore? I'd like to see this story progress, not go backwards.

D9 was the best sci fi film of 09 for me. I really would not care for a prequel just because I don't see how Copley's character will fit into a prequel. His character made this movie awesome. I would rather see a sequel showing the prawns coming back but reacting in a totally different way than we would expect and to see Wikus transition back to a human and exposing MNU.

Sci Fi 2009

D9 was cool, Moon was wicked awesome, but Avatar? Star Trek was solid fun...something that Avatar could have and should have been.

Wouldn't it be cool..??

If a more "evolved" alien race came down chasing their escaped "slaves".. meaning the prawns...?

And then, of course, tried to enslave Earth.. an alliance with the prawns is formed.. etc etc etc

Isn't this what the new version of V is trying to hint at?
