Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis May. 18, 2009

The trailer for Guy Ritchie's two-fisted sleuth adventure SHERLOCK HOLMES has arrived and, well... it's a whole lot more jokey than I expected (or wanted, really).

It feels a bit like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark got sucked through a time machine and spit out in Victorian-era London, and his zany attempts to acclimate to the period were captured on film with Ritchie's box of standard visual tricks. Or maybe it's just me.

Could be fun, if only because of the inherent and undeniable charm of the cast. Decide for yourself - check it below or in hi-def at Yahoo.

Extra Tidbit: That guy Mark Strong does have a great villain voice, eh?

Wild Wild West?
Ummm....I don't see where you're all getting WWW from? I didn't see giant mechanical spiders, a severed head used as a projector, a villain missing his entire torso and lower half, Salma Hayek's perfect cans, cliche lines, pedal bikes with rockets mounted to it, etc.

So explain to me...how does Sherlock look anything like Wild Wild West?

Iron Man? Not Really
First, I think it looks like alot of fun, and am excited for it. Also, I disagree with the "Iron Man" comment because this is a Guy Ritchie flick, and all his movies had a sense of humor much like the trailer was showing (including Swept Away, that movie was a joke).

I'm definitely down for this. Looks like Guy and RDJ found the perfect mix of action and comedy for their re-invention.

Plus, Rachel McAdams in sexy clothing... so down.

In my eyes Ritchie still hasn't slipped up at all, bar Swept Away. So in my book Sherlock Holmes is listed intoxicatingly high in the Anticipated Movies list.

LOOKS RUBBISH!
LXG meets Ritchies hackmanship = a disaster. Lets make sherlock more 'sexy' and 'action filled' and 'hilarious'. Yeah do that, then show us images we've seen countles times before and bore us death. Bog standard trailer with same sound effects zzzzzzzz... A flop in the making, mark my words.

The jury is still out on this one for me.

I'll have to wait and see the movie in theatres.

It couldn't possibly be as lame as Wolverine could it?

Yea Mark Strong is awesome, he was great in RocknRolla. This will probably be pretty good, the way the hammer bounces off the big guys chest was pretty great. Hopefully it has a good balance of badass and funny like Snatch and Lock, Stock.

Looks fun
I think this looks like fun and completely agree that the trailer could be misleading. Ritchie tends to have fairly content heavy movies that are still quite "jokey" so I think it'll be good. Plus I mean, Rachel McAdams just looks loverly.

I'm not entirely sure what I just watched. One thing's certain: it has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. That being said, it does look fairly entertaining, so I suppose it could go either way.

The Purpose of Trailers . . .
. . . is to market a movie and sell tickets. As we all know, trailers can sometimes be deceptive in that way. When a two hour movie is edited down to two an a half minutes, a lot can be lost in the translation. Of course, this is intentional. So, while this film may seem more jokey and like "Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark got sucked through a time machine and spit out in Victorian-era...
. . . is to market a movie and sell tickets. As we all know, trailers can sometimes be deceptive in that way. When a two hour movie is edited down to two an a half minutes, a lot can be lost in the translation. Of course, this is intentional. So, while this film may seem more jokey and like "Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark got sucked through a time machine and spit out in Victorian-era London, and his zany attempts to acclimate to the period were captured on film with Ritchie's box of standard visual tricks," it could be a different type of movie in its full form. Obviously, the studio knows that Iron Man was a hit and that Robert Downey, Jr.'s comedic charm was a part of that success. So it makes sense that they would make a trailer that highlights quirky moments.

So, while it looks jokey, these scenes could be comedy relief to a more serious story line. That said, even if it were more "jokey," I don't think that is a particularly bad thing. You get what you pay for, and if you have an actor like Robert Downey, Jr., someone who has charisma and humor to spare, it would make sense to take advantage of this.

BURN THE FILM REEL!
I've been against this idea from the beginning. I'm for a comedic spin on Holmes, like the now cancelled Cohen/Ferrell/Apatow flick.

I idea of a "reimagined" Holmes who beats the crap out of everyone, directed by friggin' Guy Ritchie? Ugh. I was sour on this flick from the beginning.

But, now... this has gone too far. Why not just hire Will Smith and call this Wild Wild West 2? Does no one else see the similarities. This will turn into Downey Jr.'s most embarrassing moment. I bet my last dime on it.

STOP THIS FROM BEING RELEASED!

I can dig it. Looks like yea it's a bit too much on the reimagining thing but hey fuck it. I'll see it becuase I'm a fan of all involved and, though my Holmes knowledge is limited, this looks like a Holmes for a new generation. In all honesty Doyle's character is a bit boring for modern audiences and wouldnt work if it was completely canon. So bring on the action scenes. looks like a good time.

I'm actually looking more forward to this than I was. Wasn't too crazy about turning Holmes into an action star, but if handled correctly mightn't be terrible.

And if that's cocaine he's trying to snort, then there's some cool points already. Jude Law does look pretty great, though.

Sherlock who?
Ok, this seemed like a good idea at first, then I remembered that Guy Ritchie's films don't make any fucking sense and logic is the entire basis of everything Holmes is...that, bad violin playing and opium. I see a distinct lack of opium, thinking and actual mystery solving in this trailer. When did they decide Holmes should be an anachronistic James Bond?

And the truth is this is dumb.

looks pretty comedic but for the record im into it.

i doubt it's a full fledged comedy, just like iron man or pirates wasn't. there'll probably just be a ton of funny parts by nature of having rdj in the cast and it being a guy Ritchie flick.

Agreed, this looks like Holmes in name only. I'm no Holmes expert, but the Arthur Conan Doyle that I have read is nothing like this. Hate, HATE the slow motion speed ramping. It reminded way too much of the Wolverine trailer. This doesn't look like a disaster, love classic Guy Ritchie and RD Jr., but this just looks really mediocre.

Oh Dear
Looking "more jokey" than I would have wanted as well.

Sherlock "comic action hero" may work, but it's going to require some major expectation adjustments for a lot of Holmes' fans.

The movie may do fine commercially -- some people don't know the difference between Sherlock Holmes and Austin Powers, and frankly don't care just so long as their precious RDJ is...
