Sherlock's Christmas special to get theatrical release; first clip revealed

The fourth season of BBC's Sherlock hasn't even been written yet (groan) but a Sherlock Christmas special is on the way and some of us may even get the chance to see it on the big screen. During the Sherlock Comic-Con panel, series co-creator Steven Moffat made mention that the special will be getting a theatrical release in "select theaters" around the world. Unfortunately it's not a wide-release but some theaters are better than no theaters I suppose.

A first look at the special was also screened at the panel and you can check it out right below.

It may be under two minutes but the temporary transition to a Victorian setting already feels like something I'd love to see again; hopefully this becomes a Sherlock Christmas special tradition and gives Martin Freeman another chance to sport that rockin' stache. The fourth season of Sherlock isn't set to be filmed until early 2016 as Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are both very busy guys, but we can look forward to the Sherlock Christmas special arriving this Christmas.

Awesome that they are giving a nod to the original story structure from the books, which honestly was rather stiff, since they departed so much from it in the modern day series, thankfully. Not sure about the pipe and hat, as it almost seems to cliche, and he never really smoked outside his room that much. But looks wonderful, you can never have too much Sherlock!

Release Date

Does it actually come out Christmas Day? Anyway I can watch in online for free or buy it on iTunes Christmas Day? I'm really looking forward to watching this with a hot tea as the snow falls. I get that sounds corny but it will be cozy.

As corny as that sounds. That actually sounds delightfull. Nice Winter evening. Dark and snowy outside (calm of course) on the couch with a blanket and some hot tea and a fire in the background.

The more I've seen this project, the more I think of the late Jeremy Brett's performance as Sherlock Holmes. I really need to visit that great series.

I own all the Brett series and movies. He is Sherlock. Cumberbatch has really made the character his own and updated it perfectly. Actually they are the only guys I accept as Sherlock. Basil is cool too I guess.

They're both Sherlock but I prefer Jeremy Brett over Benedict Cumberbatch. His performance is great, don't get me wrong, but Jeremy Brett's performance of Sherlock Holmes was perfect. Same as David Suchet's Hercule Poirot - Albert Finney's Poirot was good but not as great as David Suchet's.
