Showrunner Steven Moffat is down for a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover episode

There is a ton of Doctor Who and Sherlock crossover fanfiction out there, but could a crossover episode between the two BBC shows actually happen? Some think it's a possibility since Steven Moffat is the showrunner for both series, and Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss is also a writer on Doctor Who. With the upcoming Sherlock special set in Victorian London and unconnected to the series, there could also be a crossover episode at some point, right?

While speaking with EW, Steven Moffat said he's open to a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover, however there are others who don't think it is a good idea.

My instinct—and this is probably from years of doing Doctor Who—is I’m just such a tart. If people want to, we should give it to them. But I got persuaded by Mark, Benedict, [executive producer Sue Vertue] and Martin saying, “Look, it will never be as good as they think it’s going to be,” and then I say, “Yes, but we’ll just bang it out and make it as good.” “Yeah, but you can’t give everybody everything they want all the time.” I’m in the camp of giving them everything they want. But I think they’re sane and right and I’m just a tart.

Although I agree that a crossover episode probably wouldn't be as awesome as many people believe it would be, it does sound fantastic on paper. What do you think: Are Mark Gatiss, Sue Vertue, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman "sane and right" and Steven Moffat is just being a tart, or could a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover work?

Peter Capaldi is currently filming his second season as the Doctor, and the Sherlock Christmas special episode will air sometime in December 2015.

It's all in the execution

If Moffat came up with a great storyline that featured both Dr, Who and Sherlock Holmes, I'd happily see it.

Maybe if they did it outside Sherlock's continuity, like with this special that's coming up.

The idea of the Doctor meeting Sherlock is a good enough idea in itself; even if Madame Vastra is essentially Sherlock by proxy.

Moffat is killing everything

The guy needs to be fired. He literally stole Dr. Who plotlines from Asylum Horror movies this year.

He's a tart.

While I have enjoyed both series, they are tonally a little bit different. Watching Sherlock debate the Doctor could be fun for five minutes, but I prefer him debate John Watson. Who I doubt would really mesh well with the world of the Doctor. The appeal I get from Sherlock is that, however larger-than-life he is, the world around him seems relatively normal. Sort of the opposite of Doctor Who.

No, thanks. Keep Crumbatch's ugly mug and hammy acting as far away from 'Doctor Who' as possible. For an encore, get Moffat and Gatiss as far away from 'Doctor Who' as possible.
