Shut your mouth! A Shaft reboot is in the works

02.18.2015

shaft 1971

Who is the man getting a reboot? SHAFT! You're damn right, New Line is moving forward with a SHAFT reboot. If you’re keeping score, the last SHAFT film, which was also a reboot, came out in 2000. So by today’s standards, this actually sounds long overdue I’d say. With social injustice capturing all the headlines these days, it’s probably a great time for a version closer to the 1971 version directed by Gordon and starring Richard Roundtree.

The Wrap reports that producer John Davis (PREDATOR) will be developing the property  and that there isn't an actor attached to the lead yet. We also don't know if this will be a complete reboot or continue the legacy with the understanding the audience knows who Shaft is. This story is fresh, so if you have an actor in mind for the role of private detective John Shaft, start the online noise now!

The 2000 version directed by John Singleton and starring Samuel L. Jackson was pretty tame, so let’s hope New Line really goes for it with this one and doesn’t water it down like they did with FRIDAY THE 13th (2009) and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010).

Who would you cast as Shaft?

It must be said.
Shia LaBeouf.
or, you know. Will Smith.

Shaft 2000 was pretty bad. The character was unlikable, frequent usage of the n-word, the story was everywhere, and so on. While the original had some pacing issues, at least the character was 'interesting' and somewhat likable...and we kind of knew what was going on.

I'm hoping that, with this reboot, we get a more in-depth, strong storyline (kind of like what they're doing with the Daniel Craig Bond's in making 007 more 'human' and 'relatable' while retaining his badassness)....

Now, since someone mentioned Nathan Fillion as Shaft....maybe other contenders can be Johnny Depp or Tom Hardy....or maybe Leonardo DiCaprio? lol

On a serious tip I think Michael Jai White is a good idea.

I CAN DIG IT!

Shaft is one of those characters that can keep going. I also liked Sam Jackson's version although he never really got his man every time like the theme song suggests it took three times. Nevertheless those who suggested Michael Jai White are spot on. He deserves a starring role in a feature film getting world wide release. While we are at it give Scott Adkins a role as the villain these two should be mainstream because thet can actually kick ass and take names! And bring back Sam Jackson as

Shouldn't someone be complaining that Idris Elba isn't American?

Fucking Brits, going over there and stealing all their grossly overpaid acting jobs...

well, technically...

The 2000 was (kind of) a sequel, as Sam Jackson was playing the original Shaft's nephew, if I remember correctly, with Roundtree having a cameo as THE Shaft...
And I don't get the hate for this film.

Yeah, Sam Jackson was the original Shaft's nephew and Richard Roundtree did have a cameo as "Uncle Shaft" (original Shaft). It really was an entertaining movie.

Older or younger?

Younger Shaft: John Boyega or David Ramsay (ARROW)

Older Shaft: Idris Elba, or I hear there's this guy Samuel L. Jackson. I'm sure he might be available.

I wouldn't mind seeing a younger Shaft, maybe in their 20's. He had to start somewhere, right?

Once again I usually hate rehashing old material but this could be pretty cool. Not to mention It would be nice to see a better remake than the 2000 version.

As far as casting give it to Chadwick Bosman he gets to play every cool black chareceter out there.

Seriosly though Idris Elba would be amazing.

Nathan is great, but I'd rather see Anton Yelchin get the part.

Probably the only case where I'm totally for one of my all-time favorite movies being remade. Idris Elba gets my vote for replacement any day of the week.

I like Elba he is one cool mofo, but he feels to serious for this, especially since he looks down on the comic book character Heimdall he has been playing.

I hated Christian Bale for the longest time because of his character in Shaft. I don't think it wasn't until The Fighter or The Dark Knight that I got over his character.

Shaft 2000 remake wasn't that bad. It was quite enjoyable. I still remember the line from original Shaft. His source or something came ask Shaft "What did you get?". Then Shaft replied "I got laid!". Priceless. As for new Shaft, Idris Elba. He has the charisma and every time he's on screen he demands your attention.

My favorite part of the original is right in the beginning when the guy comes up to Shaft with knockoff watches and asks, "Fine timepiece, brother?" ::Shaft flashes badge:: "Goodbye!"
