Shutter Island teaser?

03.30.2009

The only thing I can think of that gets me more excited than a film that takes place in a mental institution, is a film that takes place in a mental institution that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and is directed by Martin Scorsese. Enter SHUTTER ISLAND , the upcoming thriller based on the Dennis Lehane novel and co-starring Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, and Jackie Earle Haley. The film takes place on a small island in Massachusetts’ Outer Harbor, where U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) is sent to find a murderous patient who escaped from the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. The image below, which appeared suddenly in a Berliner Zeitung newspaper, tells us that this film will be filled with all kinds of creepy.

Whether this is in fact the film's first official teaser poster or merely some early marketing concept remains to be seen. It does however, immediately remind me of another insane asylum-set film--the grossly underrated SESSION 9--which can only be a good thing.

Extra Tidbit: The fact that the escaped lunatic in this film is a woman elevates this movie to a whole new level.

misspelling?

doubt this is real...wouldn't it be "What Ever Happened to Patient 6?" not "Whatever Happened to Patient 6?" though i could just be a nitpicker.

SESSION 9!

Great job Barna, Session 9 was a great, underrated movie. And this one sounds like it will be great too. Can't wait for the trailer.

You had me at "...Directed by Martin Scorsese" I'm there. I like the poster, even if it's just a concept poster.

Should be good

I read the book in 2004 or 2005 (whenever it first came out), and it was an enjoyable, taut read. The only issue I forsee people having with this film - ***SPOILER AHEAD!!!***

...is its twist ending. I won't give it away and ruin it in case someone misses my spoiler note above, but let's just say that, in a market saturated with films like "Identity," "The Sixth Sense" and such, the twist may come off a bit repetitive and predictable...

Im confused by some of the comments below. We are talking about Martin Scorsese and there are comments using words such as 'decent' and 'hope'.

Scorsese has never done anything decent, its always been way above decent.

Like other Scorsese movies, I'll see this for its stars, but I'm not expecting anything. (Thus my pleasant surprise with the fairly decent 'The Departed.')

Well, perhaps this time a Scorsese will have some good pictures? I hope so.

In Marty We Trust.

Shutter Island is gonna be all kinds of masterpiece.

Regarding insane asylum-set films, I'd hope Shutter Island is in the same league as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
