Shutter Island trailer!

06.10.2009

I've been waiting for some time to see what Martin Scorsese was cooking up for SHUTTER ISLAND. I read the book, the story of two detectives summoned to a mental hospital on an island to track down a missing inmate, a while back and found myself intrigued when thinking of how Scorsese would bring the somewhat popcorny suspense yarn to the screen. So far the cast is absolutely fantastic with Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Jackie Earle Haley, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson and Michelle Williams. Ain't a weak link among them.

Today the new trailer is online and wow, it looks MUCH better than I had anticipated. The book is...OK, but it's not great (it's like a book you'd read on an afternoon on the beach). It's a tight story that's somewhat undone by the last 1/3 of the story. But Scorsese looks to have taken out some of the dead wood in the novel and really ramped up the tension. Check it out below or head to Apple's trailer page to see it in HD.

Formula Trumps Spoilers

I don't know if this trailer gives away too much. It might show a large portion of the story, but admit it, those are all predictable elements anyways. Without ruining it for those who avoided the trailer, I will only say that it is basically the same formula for almost every horror movie ever made. Those who watched it should know what I mean by that. So, while it might give away a lot, it seems to me it is only showing what audiences already expect in a horror thriller, which means it is

I don't have to explain the formula to anyone, do I?

The trailer makes it look like any other run of the mill suspense thriller that has been released in the last 10 years or so. I'm going to watch it anyway because of Scorcese's well earned reputation. I also agree with the previous poster who pointed out that the trailer gives away all the plot points. Hopefully, the finished product will have some artful surprises for us. As for DeCaprio, he is a super talented actor but similar to Deniro and others he has fallen into a acting rut lately of

However, he always is believable and technically solid if somewhat predictable.

This seems like an effort by Scorsese to make something commercial so he can make his personal films. Which I don't mind.
Case in point:
Alice doesn't Live here Anymore begat Taxi Driver
Color of Money begat Last Temptation of Christ.
Cape Feare begat everything in the 90's.
Hopefully this will be a hit and he can make Silence and that Dino/Sinatra movie.

aElmO1,

I hope you see the irony in your post.

Didn't think I was "bitching" at all. Just responding to a couple schmoes who directly made comments to me. But, I agree, I can't respond to everyone cuz that defeats the purpose of the strikeback section. It's about the news and not replying to everyone who wants to talk to me (or tell me off for whatever reason). I must be a popular guy. So, just letting you guys know I'm done with indulging anyone with a response and I will try to

Paramount fucking ruined my experience for this film. Jesus, why didnt they show the credits as well. Who exactly do they think is going to see this film ? Its sure as hell not the kids hanging out at the mall on friday night. I cant imagine PSYCHO being released today, probably would show Leigh death scene as a promotion. I like the Lewton-esque vibe of the film, but christ why did Scorsese go with Paramount, doesnt he care who owns his films ? At least WB would've sold the picture without

hate to say it...

...cause I'm a big fan of both, but if this wasn't directed by Scorsese and starred DiCaprio, I would have thought the trailer was for a lame, derivative horror movie. Hoping that's not the case.

looks pretty solid

Not what I was expecting but good nonetheless. I just can;t wait till this friday so I can not go see the taking of pelham 123. I swear if I have to sit through another one of those goddamn 32 second previews I'm gonna keep pissing and moaning because nothing I do or say will make a difference... I know it's money but come on.

wow

This looks really really really great. Sorta a hard left turn from the conventional Scorsese which is a good thing. Looks intense and I can just tell the acting is going to be remarkable. Has Best Picture nomination written all over it

VincentCostigan,

Christopher Nolan is actually my favorite director. I just don't like either of his Batman movies. His other movies are great though in my opinion. I especially love Memento. One of my favorite movies ever.

But, you are right, I will have to stay away from the Inception news because it will only annoy me. On the one hand, I really liked all of Christopher Nolan's non-Batman films so it has that going for it. But, on the other hand, I can't stand DiCaprio so it has

I'm sure I'll eventually see it and hopefully, at the very least, it won't be terrible.

And no, I'm not always causing trouble. I'm negative when I don't like the news and positive when I do. I tend to only post in the strikeback section though whenever I feel strongly. So, you're either going to hear me talk about how I hate something or how I absolutely love something.

"Who do you consider better than him rumsfield."

Um, practically everyone, since he's one of my least favorite actors. But, if you want to know who some of my favorite actors are...Christian Bale (DiCaprio was originally supposed to play Patrick Bateman and I can only imagine how much he would have sucked in the role. Bale, however, was fucking excellent.) That said, I haven't liked a Christian Bale movie since '06. The Batman and Terminator stuff didn't really interest me. I did see

I did see those movies though but didn't care for them.

I'm also a fan of Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, and Robert Downey Jr. Of course all 3 of these guys have been in movies that weren't so great sometimes but they have been fucking brilliant in their good movies.

What it comes down to is DiCaprio never convinces me because he overacts. I just don't buy him as any of his characters. Except for in Revolutionary Road as I mentioned earlier because he really fit the role of an immature husband.

I'm sure there are actors that you guys think suck but are constantly praised by both critics and audiences. So, you can probably relate to how I am annoyed at the popularity of DiCaprio since you might either feel the same way about him or at least a different actor.

Always causin' trouble, eh.

Stay away from Inception news, bud. Since your hate for Nolan and DiCaprio combine with that one film, your world may implode when it releases next summer....

Fuckin' awesome. Scorsese. DiCaprio. In other hands I don't think the sub-genre or story would sell me, but looks like the Scorsese touch changes everything. Definitely there.

JoBlo, Koteas is definitely in the movie.

They had me at "Scorsese"

I've read on AwardsDaily that they do in fact dramatically amp up the psychological tension from the book in the movie. Someone there got ahold of the screenplay.

I used to like Scorsese's movies but once he started casting that no-talent DiCaprio in every fucking flick, it just really irritated me and I lost interest in this once great director.

I totally agree with Johnny Moreno's comment. DiCaprio's accent in The Departed faded, then dropped off completely, but then DiCaprio tried to make up for it in his next line delivery by laying it on extra thick. Then he repeated the process through the entire movie (while overacting of course). It was a

AVOID THIS TRAILER

I've haven't read the book because I want to see this movie with fresh eyes. I only know the basic premise of the novel but from what I understand there is a "twist" to the story. This trailer gives away WAY TOO MUCH information. I've already figured out the "surprise" element of the plot based on just this 2 minute trailer. Thanks marketing jackasses.
