Whether you like it or not, a follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s SICARIO is on its way, and Deadline has learned that Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima is in final talks to direct the sequel, titled SOLDADO. Sollima has helmed feature films such as SUBURRA and A.C.A.B., as well as the Sky Italia crime drama series Gomorra, whose second season premiered last month.

SICARIO scribe Taylor Sheridan is returning to pen SOLDADO, which will follow Benicio Del Toro's Alejandro Gillick and Josh Brolin's CIA agent Matt Graver as they "concern themselves with what is being smuggled across the border between Mexico and the U.S. in the tunnels used to move drugs and illegal immigrants." It was previous reported that Emily Blunt was also expected to reprise her role from the original movie, but according to the site her character will not appear in the sequel.

I'm not familiar with Sollima's work as a director, but based on his credits it seems like he's a good fit for the project, although I am a little bummed that Blunt won't be back for the sequel. If everything goes as planned, production should begin this fall, which means SOLDADO will probably hit theaters sometime next year.

GOOD RIDDANCE TO BLUNT

Blunt's charactor was the weak link in the original. Glad she's out. But I will withhold an opinion until more info is released.

Awesome

Not familiar with the director either, but they do indeed sound like a solid choice. I'm actually glad that Blunt's character isn't returning. She was stellar in the first one, but too often sequels feel convoluted in finding an excuse for all of the main characters to get back together, it just doesn't seem like she'd naturally be a part of the proceeding this time around considering how the first film ended.

It's funny, I never thought, initially, a sequel to Sicario would be a good idea--especially with such a badass title. But with this new title, Blunt not returning, and Del Toro and Brolin returning, I have to say I'm pretty excited.

Sicario is probably what the second season of True Detective should have been.

The movie had a very realistic action and a very real sense of thrill and fear. loved it.I'd love a sequal. Best action drama if the year.

Blunt was more of a side character witnessing the events of the story, I don't see why the next would center around her. Definitely want to see more of Del Toro and flash backs of his past.

Don't know how I feel about this. Loved Sicario and thought it made for a great one and done told story and Blunt was a big, and vital reason why. But I wouldn't mind seeing and learning more about Del Toro's character. But again, the fact that Blunt won't be in this AND the fact that Villenueve won't be back to direct doesn't inspire much hope as well.
