Sigourney Weaver open to playing Ripley again in another Alien movie

06.03.2014

While making an appearance at the Hero Complex Film Festival, Sigourney Weaver revealed she is interested in reprising her iconic role from the ALIEN series, and talked about what a fifth ALIEN flick might look like. The actress took part in a Q & A after a double feature screening of Ridley Scott's ALIEN and James Cameron's ALIENS, and Weaver says she believes Ellen Ripley's story isn't finished yet.

I feel after going to a couple of these Comic Cons and meeting so many fans who are so passionate about the series, passionate about Ripley — that there’s more story to tell; but I don’t know how to do that. I don’t think Alien belongs on Earth popping out of a haystack, which is where I was afraid it was going to go. I feel it should take place in the far reaches of the universe where no one in their right mind would go. There are very few filmmakers that I can think of that I would want to entrust this to. But I can think of a couple… I feel there’s a longing in certain groups of fans when I meet them for the story to be finished because we really left it up in the air and I feel a bit badly about that because I was part of that decision making process. I didn’t want to make four and five in a bundle. I think it’s hard to make these films all in a big lump. You need time to sort of let things resonate so I can imagine a situation where we could at least finish telling her story. I think that would be very satisfying at least to me — although I haven’t done anything about it; but I can understand why that could happen and I certainly know young filmmakers who are interested in doing that. So we’ll just have to see what happens.

There have been talks of a fifth ALIEN movie for years, however many assumed it was probably dead because of Ridley Scott's ALIEN prequel PROMETHEUS and the planned sequel. Obviously Sigourney Weaver talking about wanting to play Ripley again doesn't mean ALIEN 5 will definitely happen, but perhaps there is some life left in the project.

Would you be interested in ALIEN 5 with Sigourney Weaver back as Ripley, and who do you think should be behind the camera for the potential fifth film?

I think you could almost 'reboot' (and I use that word tentatively) the Alien franchise and still keep Sigourney as Ripley. It can be like a side adventure/separate cinematic universe kinda thing??

If you can bring back Ripley...

Then you better bring back Hicks. Fuck it, Hudson, Newt and Vasquez too!

I don't know how they could bring Ripley back.

They've already gone the Cloning route... I don't know. I know it's sci-fi, and they can do anything in sci-fi but bringing Ripley back would be too far fetched.

ONLY IF...

Fox acknowledges Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection DIDN'T happen and continue the story from where Aliens left off. That's the only way I'd be remotely interested.

I like how Sigurney is thinking. Ripley is maybe the best female action heroine ever. There is so much that could be done with Alien, even landing on Earth, if it's handled creatively.

Reboot

Start all over again with Weaver cast again as Ripley. Do a trilogy with a far superior 3rd film with a engineer (is that what they called them from Prometheus? Too lazy to look up) encounter, tying up both series.

NO EARTH

Keep the Xeno's off Earth. Like she said, someplace "alien" in nature. Someplace that you wouldn't what to be at. I love Camerons Aliens, but I want a horror film instead of a action film. And people dog the 3rd film but remember it wasn't the directors fault, I actually like the Directors Cut.

This is nothing new about Weaver. Still waiting for a grand follow up to Aliens. Do Alien 3 again, only better!

Sigourney Weaver has long since been down for playing Ellen Ripley again. I welcome this but I want a Prometheus sequel first. Prometheus left so many great possibilities open for a what could be a great sequel or two. I welcome another Ellen Ripley Alien movie, only with Ridley Scott or James Cameron either directing or producing. How about a reboot of the Alien series after the events of Aliens, where Alien 3 and Resurrection never took place? I'm still waiting for the grand epic conclusion

I'm still waiting for the grand epic conclusion to the Alien trilogy, Alien 3 was not it. Even Cameron says in his commentary, he was so disappointed by what the studio did with Alien 3. He left it open for what should've been a thrilling epic conclusion to the trilogy, and right away two of the survivors are killed during the opening credits.

I agree. Alien3 SHOULD have been the conclusion to a trilogy. The studio screwed it up.
They should have gotten Cameron back to do it and to do it his way.

3 and 4 were just nightmares she had in cryo. Skip ahead 20 years with Hicks, Bishop, Newt and Ripley as an alien-hunting family unit. Done.

Ditto what The_Soloist said

If you bring back Ripley, bring back Hicks, too. Disregard 3/4 and pick up the story 30 years after Aliens.

I want her to reprise Ripley, but in video game form only...

I don't want any more Alien movies, I'm sorry but let the franchise rest for another decade. I want Alien: Isolation to come out and blow everyone away and then have Sigourney reprise her Ripley role in game form only. I think that is the way to take the series. Ghostbusters did the same thing. We don't need a third movie, the last PS3/360 game was brilliantly told and completed the trilogy in its own right. Everyone reprises their roles and it was perfect.

I'm ok for a 5th movie...

... and even if the 4th one is the weakest, I hope they will assume the storyline and follow the ending of ressurection : Ripley's returning to Earth and so Aliens too... I would love to see Aliens fighting on Earth...
Directors I would like to see (always a different one to appropriate his movie)
- Paul Verehoeven
- The Wachowskis
- Zack Snyder
- Joss Whedon
- John Carpenter

Joss Whedon already got to screw up an Alien movie. Let someone else try. Alfonso Cuarón maybe?

I am a fan, but my wish would be to re-boot it from Alien3. Like re-do it. Alien3 wrecked the franchise (I won't spoil it) but I will say that the decisions made in that film changed the Alien Franchise in a very uncomfortable way.

Pretty sure you can rest easy on speaking of the shitty plot to a movie that was made in 1992.

Splinter, Alien3 was in its own an okay movie, but the fact that it was a sequel to a sequel of a franchise that killed off the franchise star was a decision that screwed with the future of the franchise. It was short sighted and killed off the cash cow. Subsequent Alien Resurrection was just impossible to buy because of Alien3. From there on it was two AVP films. The entire Ripley plot line dissolved. If Alien3 wasn't part of the canon, it would have been a very unique film. Putting it

Maybe Ripley's story should have ended there. She did what she set out to do. Kill the alien. Maybe the franchise should have ended there. Their can be good alien movies without her. Maybe that's why I liked Scott's prequel idea. She stopped the species from reaching earth.Literally in the blaze of glorey. I love the series. I really do. But resurrection had a lot of problems that I don't blame on part 3. I mean that movie looks fantastic. Resurrection does not. Not to me anyway.

But I could just be mad that Michael Wincott didn't have a great role like I thought he would. I really thought he was gonna be a bad ass in that movie and he never ever sees a freaking alien!!

I believe the time has passed as well.... but, whenever James Cameron is done making his Avatar sequels, it would be cool if he could do an Alien 5 and finish the franchise off.

What about a semi-reboot...where we forget everything after part 2...and have Hicks, Bishop, Newt and Ripley crash land on the Aliens' home planet or something coz Bishop's is following new orders remotely. I'd be down with that. May be a Hudson clone can show up too...or something. As for "because we really left it up in the air", I don't agree with that. I mean, she was a full on hero in Part 2... died a hero's death in part 3...got cloned...came back...becomes a hero again ...and then

I'm not really interested in seeing an old Ripley throwing down with Aliens, I think the widow has passed for a fifth Alien movie. I know I'm in the minority when I say this but I fucking love Alien 3, especially the extended cut, so I feel that Ripley's story was told and told well with the first three movies.

I totally agree. I love Alien 3. It's actually my favorite movie of the franchise and my favorite movie of all time. I catch a lot of flak for that but I can't help it. Love the movie. I usually just pretend that Alien 4 doesn't exist. I would love to see Ripley back at it again but I agree with you that part 3 wrapped it up very nicely. Even if Cameron and Fincher hate it, I don't. Oddly enough Danny Webb (Morse) is rumored to be in Prometheus 2 on IMDb. Now that would be a cool alien sequel

Thank you! Alien and Aliens are classic masterpieces, but with the extended cut of Alien 3, I've come to realize how smart and subtle the film is. It's such a bold film! The little girl chokes in her own vomit, the good soldier dies, the friendly robot is now gross and pissing milk out of every orifice, Also, what I really like about this film is how the creature is almost secondary, the real danger are all those sexist men who try to rape and kill her and the evil Company which really is

No guns, no flame throwers, no marines, no grenades, just booby traps that keep failing miserably. Also, the cinematography and the sets are some of the most beautiful of the series. In so many ways, this film reminds me of Se7en and how the killer (or the creature) brings out the worst aspects of human nature and wins in the end. It's even a critic of our broken criminal justice system and of religious dogma... and it end with the suicide of the series' protagonist... it's so audacious!

I know many will be against the idea, but whatever it takes to get Ripley to meet Dutch (cloning, time travel, cyborgs, holograms, I'll even settle for a dream sequence), I want it to happen.

I would be down with another 'Alien' film with Weaver. I would also like to see Michael Biehn back then too. And just have the franchise pull a 'Days of Future Past' and fix the timeline after 'Alien 3' and 'Resurrection' screwed it up.
