Sigourney Weaver tries to explain why there needs to be four Avatar sequels

AVATAR is an interesting blockbuster in the sense that it came, was super successful, but for the most part isn't really part of the zeitgeist. I mean, there aren't iconic scenes or lines that are spoofed or recited ad nauseam like Cameron's other films.

But whether we like it or not, we are getting not just one, two, or even three sequels, but four goddamn sequels. Why? What story are they telling? Well Sigourney Weaver, who was in the first film in case you forgot, will also be in the sequels, and had this to say to Entertainment Weekly:

There’s a very good reason why it turned out to be four sequels...Having read all four of them, I think they’re absolutely extraordinary and worth the wait...These films are very much about the peril of this beautiful planet, and [Cameron] is continuing the same themes of greed and callousness of the corporations and plight of the indigenous people.

Still not a lot to go on...honestly, more corporations attacking the Na'vi seems like four retreads. But we'll see, maybe Cameron has something special under his sleeve (I mean, ALIENS and TERMINATOR 2 are still gold standards for good sequels). Hopefully it's less generic and forgettable than the first.

Apparently the first sequel will finally his theaters December 18th, 2020, the second on December 17th, 2021, the third on December 20th, 2024, and the fourth one on December 19th, 2025.

I love Avatar. I love Sci-fi. Sure the story mirrored other films, but the action and FX were great and the 3D is still some of the most immersive I have experienced. I'll probably be a minority here, but I'm really looking forward to the sequels.

Nature good - Greed bad

Ironic: a lecture about greed spread across 5 goddamn movies.... really Mr. Cameron? Seems a little greedy to me.

Confused

I'm still confused why there's any sequels at all.
Yeah, the CGI was good but the story was lame and derivative, and 3D just looks so fake.
They should just let it lie.

FOUR SEQUELS!!!

That's NEVER been done before! Except of course Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, Mission: Impossible, Transformers, X-Men, Fast & Furious, Planet of The Apes, Harry Potter, Twilight, Pirates of The Carribian, Bourne movies, Lord of The Hobbits, Alien, Saw, Rocky, Die Hard...

REALLY?

As in, do we really NEED 4 SEQUELS?!?! I probably would've been onboard like 7 years ago, but at this point... Who Cares! When I first saw Avatar in the theater back in what 2008, I thought it was fairly solid and to this day think I think it used 3D to its fullest potential out of anything else I've seen in that medium. But since then, I've tried to watch it a couple times when it's been on TV and it's just boring as shit!

I bet the sequels will be something like the corporation forcing a democracy on them, or them just creating one. Then, there will either be a dictator/hitler/ww2 movie, or civil war between tribes movies. Maybe have some slavery. And having another sequel be about minority or weird aliens getting rights. That'd be the 2nd movie. You can kind of figure out how I think the next two will go. The last one will prolly be the navi a big industry planet using lots of energy. They are running

They are running out, and find a planet they can get great energy from, but it's filled with a bunch of backwards, dirty, dumb natives, who they will have to wipe out to get their energy. But they are simpletons and there's no way they could ever come together to protect their land! And I got 4 more sequels for you fox!

I'm not excited ab these, but I'm not pissed ab it. I'm not going to hate like the others; I'll at least go see the first sequel at the big screen

Because Cameron seems to be obsessed with creating his own Star Wars or Lord Of the Rings

Disagree Mr Damaske - perhaps you might not feel there are iconic lines or moments but I would say there are plenty - I would also say that Avatar remains the best and only film to be properly watched in 3D and that changed the experience for me

Work at homw great job

My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. Go this web and start your work... Good luck... www.Jobzon3.com

Its so popular to hate on James Cameron and Avatar

I'm just gonna sit back and count James Cameron's money when these four sequels explode at the INTERNATIONAL box office. Even if the US has indeed turned on Avatar, which I highly doubt, its gonna crush overseas. I would much rather have four Avatar sequels than the four Transformers sequels Michael Bay delivered. People need to just bow down to the King of the World and let him reclaim his throne.

Cameron is awesome, no doubt. But 4 sequels to one of his weaker films. That smells like greed. In the same way ridley scott feels the need to make another 3 alien movies all of a sudden. Those guys should be above this.

The irony of talking about corporate greed when you're making four sequels to push the same message as the original.

You think Avatar has fallen by the wayside now? By the time we see the first trailer for this, it'll be over a decade since the first film. The target audience won't even remember it existed.

Hmmm I don't think so somehow - people don't forget that much and besides there have been much longer gaps between sequels
I like it how people don't draw the same comparison with the Incredibles sequel!

As much as I respect Sugourney's talent, I'm not entirely convinced about her enthusiasm for these sequels. She recently said that Ghostbusters: Answer the Call was a good movie, soo........yeah.

I'm not going to judge whether these movies will justify being such an epic, but there are actual perils and corporate greed and callousness that is going on, and making four movies isn't going to change that, or even, likely, change anyone's mind about it. Suffice to say I'm not sold on the "why".
