Simon Kinberg is set to pen the sequel to X-Men: First Class

Nov. 3, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Not to be outdone by the news of a RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES sequel, Fox decides to top that announcement with another one. Simon Kinberg (JUMPER, SHERLOCK HOLMES) has been hired to write the sequel to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

You knew there was going to be a sequel but as for who was going to write, we didn't know that. Other details? None. We can only hope that Matthew Vaughn returns to direct. It would also be nice to get back Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy.

So where do the X-Men go from here? Do they buy a shop and set up a bakery? No. Do they dress up as beer maids in order to manipulate the enemy? No. Does Cable finally make an appearance in an X-Men movie? Doubtful but it would be really cool. I wish I had more info for you, but I don't.

I'm sure some more announcements for the sequel will come soon enough. What are your hopes for the second installment?

Yeah, hire the guy who wrote the second most reviled X-Men movie. That sounds like a great idea.

Continuity Errors

It has been mentioned more than a few times that Vaughn blatantly ignored X-Men: The Last Stand and Wolverine: Origins when he made First Class. They aren't so much errors anymore as retconned out of the film universe's continuity. Technically, they never happened, for good or ill.

I'm guessing theirs a ton of source material to pick from in the Xmens younger years? I hope so the casting is superb and want to see another movie with this cast. Will we finally get Colossus?

Firstly I loved first class however they screwed this up. magneto and proffessor X where old friends and recruited jean grey together none of this can happen now they made them enemys to early in their timeline. We should of got three films showing the growing friendship then finally in the last magneto going his own way. the only way the second film can know go is to show the start of the class of mutants we all know and love or it will end up a regular xmen movie without the characters that

They haven't become "mortal enemies"... They could still patch things up and work together (Recruiting Jean, building Cerebro, the school...etc)

Maybe they didn't originally plan on a sequel? I think its awesomeness and success was probably not expected.

It doesn't bother me that they condensed so much into one movie. My guess is that the sequel will be set in the seventies and we'll have a different era to work off of.

The continuity errors didn't bother me much, I was just relieved the movie turned out so well. Bring on more as long as Vaughn gets to keep doing his thing in the director's chair.

they should just jump to whenever it was when cyclops, storm, and jean got recruited, and their first mission as a team.

They might. My guess is that the sequel will be set in the seventies and Scott, Jean and Ororo will already be in the team.

How about some damn honest to God Sentinels for once in an X-Men flick?
How about Mister Sinister or Shadow King for villains for once?

My guess is they'd go with William Stryker and the "God Loves, Man Kills" storyline.

They already did that story essentially in Singer's X-Men 2--Stryker was just less of an evangelist in the movie version.

I know others have posted about continuity errors...but can someone explain to me what's up with the timeline? X-Men was set in the near future (came out early 2000's)...First class was set in the 60's and Scott Summers was a high school kid in the early 80's during the Wolverine movie - how old are all these guys? Also...in the first X-men movie (I've forgotten) but didn't Professor X's have to explain to everyone who Magneto was? So between Wolverine (early 80's) when he recruits, at

As long as Vaughn returns to direct I have faith. Cause knowing him he'll set fire to Simon's script and pen his own with Goldman.

From the writer who brought you Xmen: The Last Stand, Jumper and XxX: State of the Union...

Sorry but until I see that Vaughn and Goldman are rewriting the script this is a horrible idea.

As long as Vaughn rewrites it...

And they better use the Scarlet Witch to explain all the timeline incoherences between the 5 movies... Somehow, the reality has been modified, "let's just explain that with the help of a character rather than admit we seriously fucked up with the scripts..."
God I hate continuity errors...

Mystique kept it from being a good movie. Everything else kept it from being an X-men movie. I literally feel like a crazy person for being the only one in the world who isn't 100% behind the direction of the film.

I completely agree about Mystique. She was so annoying and corny that is totally ruined the movie for me. "Mutant and proud!" D:

First Class was a really good movie, but the main point of the film was to show the origins of Xavier and Magneto. Now that we saw their origins, any sequel to First Class would just seem like a normal x-men movie to me, but without my favorite (and more popular) x-men characters. I'd be happy to get a good sequel, but I can't help but feel disappointed that a lot of the x-men characters I like are no longer in the x-men movies.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of the cast signed 3 picture deals, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I loved First Class and the direction that they're taking this franchise, though I'm a bit split on our new writer. Jumper and The Last Stand were dogshit but Holmes was a smart screenplay that was a surprise to me... as long as he keeps the tone of the first movie intact we should be OK... and I'm crossing my fingers for Vaughn to return to the director's chair.

Sinister would be an awesome villain for the early X-Men crew.
