Simon Kinberg on where things stand with Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine film

11.30.2015

It will be a strange day when Hugh Jackman is no longer the one strapping on Wolverine's claws, but thankfully we still have one final Wolverine film with Hugh Jackman to look forward to. We don't know much about what WOLVERINE 3 will be about, but we do know that Patrick Stewart's Professor X will play a part in the proceedings and that the film will explore their "father/son" relationship. Simon Kinberg spoke with Collider recently and gave an update on where things stand with Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine outing.

We’re pretty close to a script that everyone’s excited about, and I don’t know when the start date is, but we won’t start until it’s ready to shoot. What Hugh said to you is the attitude we all have—myself, Lauren Shuler Donner, the studio, [director] James Mangold, Hutch Parker—all of us, feel like this is six or seven or eight (depending on how you count) movies in the making, and there are few characters in the history of cinema who have cast as big a shadow as Wolverine, so to tell the final chapter of that story, it has to be the best, and it has to have a mythic quality to it. So we have to get it right, and I think we will, and my experience working with Jim Mangold, I’ve been extraordinarily impressed with him. He’s just a really great storyteller; he’s incredible with character. Really diligent, just a special talent. I have very high hopes for that movie.

Hugh Jackman has previously said that he wants to wait until the script is "perfect" before signing on to the film, but according to Kinberg, he's pretty excited by the potential of WOLVERINE 3. We don't know what storyline, if any, the team is adapting for WOLVERINE 3 and Simon Kinberg wasn't about to spill any details.

I can’t talk about what it is, but I will say that in its essence it’s something that Hugh has been excited about for a while, and something James Mangold is incredibly excited about, and the two of them together is a pretty neat thing to watch having made a movie together, and I thought they made a pretty good one. They just have a shorthand fluency and trust. It’s really nice to watch.

Hugh Jackman has teased that this final sequel may follow the "Old Man Logan" storyline, but until the script is in the bag, all we can do is guess. WOLVERINE 3 is set for a March 3, 2017 release.

We all know this will be good until the second half...

The biggest problems with Wolverine movies is they keep fucking with the villains. Turning them into the exact opposite of their comic book counterparts. Sewing DP's mouth shut, turning Silver Samurai into a fucking robot. It will never end, FOX just wants to fuck with the good stuff because they can. They turned F4 into a shitfest and blamed the audience for not liking it. They said Origins was a good film but it was "leaked" so nobody went to see it (even though we found out FOX leaked it and

I hope the rumors of a Wolverine cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse are true. I need a new explanation for how Wolverine gets his adamantium without Stryker. I find it hard to believe that Mystique would simply hand Wolverine over to Stryker, although it is possible that Mystique didn't know about Wolverine's healing factor and that she thought she had no choice but to leave Wolevrine with Stryker. I'm also confused as to how Stryker could have met Wolverine during the Vietnam War in X-Men Origins:

I'm also confused as to how Stryker could have met Wolverine during the Vietnam War in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and yet Stryker didn't seem to recognize Wolverine in DOFP and yet the Vietnam War was over. Anyway, yeah, and end credit scene showing Wolverine with his adamantium would be kind of necessary if Wolverine is going to have adamantium in Old Man Logan. I suppose a flashback would do, as would an opening credit sequence, but otherwise it is going to be a big plot hole.

Yeah, so Hugh Jackamn's final go as Wolverine is the end of an era but we already have a new era beginning with the Deadpool and Gambit movies and later we are going to get X-Force, the New Mutants and the Untitled X-Men Reboot. We know the Unititled X-Men Reboot can't be set in present day because they just recast Scott, Jean, etc. and they are very young actors, although I suppose we could suspend disbelief and assume that everybody is the same age that they were in the first X-Men trilogy which was set in the "not too distant future" which by now would be the not too distant past. We expect that there will be crossovers between Gambit, the X-Men, X-Force, the New Mutants and maybe even the Fantastic Four so the next movie after the Untitled X-Men Reboot will have to be set in present day. Obviously mutants don't age.

One possible solution is that Apocalypse binds his bones with Adamantium first before doing it to Angel. Realizes that Wolverine heals way too quick to brain wash him to be apart of the horsemen. Honestly, I think Fox really just wants to forget Wolvie Origins even happen.

I hope they do the Old Man Logan storyline. It will certainly need to be adapted quite a great deal considering the comic itself and where we last saw Logan at the end of DOFP. I certainly think they can pull it off and wouldn't hold them to doing a shot for shot remake of the comic. But as long as they can get the characterization of Logan at the beginning of the move similar to the comic and the character arc he goes through to be similar to the comic, then they'll have knocked it out of

The story itself would be such a great way to send this character off.

From rumors, it does sound like they're leaning towards the Old Man Logan story line. I hope we see something special from it since the comic adaptation will look quite differently.

I have yet to see the real essence in a wolverine movie. I saw glimpse of it in X2 in that kitchen scene where IcEman and wolvy r talking.

I am def looking forward to this

The last film wasn't just a great rebound from the terrible "Origins" but a worthy comic book movie. Hopefully they recapture some of that magic.

I really hope it ends up being everything and more. Hugh Jackman deserves to go out on top form with this last Wolverine film after all of the time, effort, and dedication he put through the good times of the franchise and all the bad times as well.
