Simon Pegg is writing a "kick-ass" role for Idris Elba in Star Trek 3

04.21.2015

While it may be somewhat overshadowed by its flashier cousin by the name of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I'm still very much looking forward to STAR TREK 3; especially knowing that Simon Pegg is co-writing the film. Having such a huge fan of the series on-board gives me hope that they'll be able to course-correct the franchise back to the exploration and adventure that was sorely missing from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

The name of Idris Elba has popped up several times in relation to the role of the villian, but unfortunately no official confirmation has surfaced yet; however, in an interview with MTV, Simon Pegg did say that as far as he knew, Idris Elba is in and that they're trying to write him "a kick-ass role." Whether or not they ended up succeeding, the rebooted Star Trek franchise has managed to cast some wonderful actors in villain roles and Idris Elba would make a great addition, especially as he's going to be an original creation and not one borrowed from The Original Series.

It will be [an original character], yes. I mean, this is the five-year mission now, we’re out there. We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people… So we’re gonna try and reflect that in the movie.

Pegg also spoke on what kind of Star Trek film we can expect saying that while the franchise has become something else, there's still room for the spirit of The Original Series to come through.

We can certainly invest in it the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what it is, so what we’re hoping to do is make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget where it came from.

In regards to that other Star franchise, Pegg said that he's seen a fair bit of footage from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and that the film will blow the world to pieces once it's released. In regards to the trailer that was released last week, Pegg had this to say:

I think the trailer is better than all the prequels put together.

STAR TREK was a fun reboot of the series I love, it wasn't without its flaws but I did enjoy it. The sequel, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, definitely had some entertainment value but it was not Star Trek; Simon Pegg seems to understand that and will hopefully take some of the fan concerns into consideration with this new film. STAR TREK 3 begins production in June for a July 8, 2016 release.

Just explore and a few scenes of meaningful conversations and it will be the Star Trek everyone wants. I like Simon Pegg, he's not clueless about any kind of fan and I think he'll make you guys happy. .

I agree. I really like what Pegg has done with his career so far. The guy seems to just hit the nail on the head every time. Even some of his more obscure stuff is good. (Fantastic Fear Of Everything & Spaced)

First one is flawed, but fun. Second is a goddamn mess of plotholes and stupid characterizations. Pegg's comments here though, do make me excited for this movie.

I don't understand all the hate Into Darkness gets. I had an absolute blast seeing it IMAX and thought it was the perfect example of what a summer Blockbuster should be all about.

But I'm very much looking forward to this next chapter despite Abrams jumping the Enterprise for Star Wars. And having Elba as the new villain will be great to see after we got to see such villainous turns aleady in the series from Bana, and Cumberbatch.

That is precisely the problem, it was a summer Blockbuster first and a Star Trek film hardly at all. Simon Pegg will correct that hopefully.

The big issue for me is that the movie spends its first 30 or so minutes taking every character we came to know and like in the 2009 reboot (which I had some very small issues with, but overall, was good fun), back to square one (where they were roughly at the start of the first). Kirk is no longer captain for such a brief period of time, that it was pointless; Spock and Uhra's fight was only there so they couldn't move further as a couple, despite not actually going where in the first one

So, I found most of the movie to be boring, storywise.

Add in the stupidity of the ending, and you have an insulting, dumb movie that I am flabbergasted anyone enjoying.

Completely agree with both replies. It didn't feel like Star Trek at all, and it didn't build on the previous movie either. It was just a waste, and very forgettable.

I enjoy Into Darkness. The only scene that really bugged me was Spock doing the Khaaaaaaaaaaan shout. Seemed like an attempt at pointless fanboy pandering and was just kinda irritating. The fact that they're probably going for an original villain this time around will tell us the real strength of this new Trek series - whether it can survive without merely offering a twist on stories that happened before.
