Simon Pegg lays to rest the rumors that Benedict Cumberbatch plays Khan in Star Trek 2

05.29.2012

Simon Pegg is the ultimate fanboy living the dream. Just read his memoir, "Nerd Do Well" and see how close your own geekiness matches his. Even going back and watching his excellent series SPACED you can see the reverence that he has for movies. So, it goes as no surprise that he absolutely despises the spoiler element that pervades today's internet.

In a recent interview, Pegg was directly asked about whether Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan in STAR TREK 2. Pegg replied and had something to say about spoilers themselves.

This time, Pegg isn’t the only Brit in the world of Starfleet. Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as a villain. Pegg is full of praise for Cumberbatch’s baddy, whom he describes as “not just another disgruntled alien. It’s a really interesting… sort of… thing,” he squirms. “Obviously I can’t talk about it.” Given internet rumours that Cumberbatch has been cast as Kirk and Spock nemesis Khan, will this be a very different “wrath of Khan” from the 1982 film of the same name? “It’s not Khan,” replies Pegg, annoyed. “That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.”

Is that misinformation from the famously secretive Abrams camp? “No, I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me – it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them,” says Pegg, a fanboy’s fanboy who wrote an autobiography called Nerd Do Well and who seems to have forgotten that part of the thrill of being a comic book/film/sci-fi fan is about getting as many details as possible in advance. “It just spoils the film,” he complains. “It masquerades as interest in the movie but really it’s just nosiness and impatience. You just want to say, ‘Oh f--- off! Wait for the film!’”

So, there you go. Any actor who told me something like this I would think was lying through their teeth. But, Pegg does not strike me as the type to make this big of a deal about spoilers only to have the truth come out and make him seem like a liar to his devoted fanbase. I am thinking he is being truthful.

But, that only goes to prove that Cumberbatch is not Khan, not that Khan doesn't exist in STAR TREK 2. Looks like we will all know for sure when STAR TREK 2 opens May 17, 2013.

I agree with Pegg. If you are going to know everything about the film before you see it, why bother seeing it? It's counter-productive. If someone said "You should watch The Shawshank Redemption - theres a great twist where Andy escapes" you'd say "Oh well thanks for ruining the ending" - to me its the same thing.

Even if they were doing Khan again (which I hope they're not) they'd have to be doing it differently as the new movies' 'alternate timetime' thing sets these just before or at the same parallel time as the original series, and therefore before the old movies, so a redo of Wrath of Khan it ain't. A redo of the original series Space Seed episode might seem kinda redundant too.
I for one am glad they've found a way to tell new stories in a similar version of a popular sci-fi universe.

Good!!

A, for all intents and purposes, rebooted alternate timeline Star Trek universe, with almost literally unlimited room and potential to explore ANY new story, I would f#cking hate for them to just take the lazy route and re-do Khan again. Thank goodness. Cumberbatch is a talented actor so here's hoping he makes an interesting villain.

I've gotten to the point where I don't believe anything anyone says in Hollywood. Trying to ferret out the truth about things like this is like asking some Air Force general to comment on Roswell.

The only accurate info we have gotten is that the villian would be an original series season 1 villian. The only options left really are Harry Mudd or Mitchell. With the photos that have been leaked we have seen Cumberbatch in Starfleet attire so it narrows the choices greatly. Besides the fact that only the truest of Star Trek fans will have seen the original series episode with Mitchell, for 99% of the audience this would be brand new for them.

The thing is that they told the villains used in the new comics would NOT be used in the film...
And they already told his story in the comics... SO NO MITCHELL... Which is disappointing as the whole 'God Complex Syndrome' would have been very interesting...

Oh thank god he isnít playing Khan. The thought that the villain was Khan had me 100% uninterested in this even though I freaking love star trek in all of its forms.

"But, that only goes to prove that Cumberbatch is not Khan, not that Khan doesn't exist in STAR TREK 2."

OMG stop! He's not gonna be in it. It would be retarded if he was. All the fans who are hoping he is in it will also be upset if it turns out he IS. JJ knows better. Stop keeping the subject and speculation alive and let it die here.
