Simon Pegg says Star Trek 3 will take us where no one has gone before

03.26.2015

With Roberto Orci and J.J. Abrams no longer in command of the U.S.S. Enterprise, new screenwriter Simon Pegg is coming on board with a mission that should please fans of every iteration of STAR TREK. While the first two films explored a rebooted universe featuring James Kirk and crew, STAR TREK 3 will harken back to the roots of the original series, and just in time for the show's fiftieth anniversary.

In a roundtable for KILL ME THREE TIMES with Comic Book Resources, Pegg related how his relationship with producer Bryan Burk and a discussion during production of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION led to the opportunity to write STAR TREK 3. He also shared this nugget.

"[STAR TREK 3 will] take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. [It is] about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that's where we want to take it, you know. Where no man has gone before — where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a more enlightened generation. But yeah, that's the mood at the moment."

With J.J. Abrams' reboot, STAR TREK has shifted from a political and sociological series about humanity to an action-oriented franchise about phasers and space battles. That is not what Gene Roddenberry's original vision was. The original television series was a western in space and I love that Pegg wants to go back to those roots. In fact, maybe shifting directions a bit is what will keep the franchise fresh and having someone as passionate and geeky as Simon Pegg may be the best decision the Paramount studio executives have made to date.

STAR TREK 3 is slated for a July 8, 2016 release.

The Concepts Behind The Original Series Should Be Revisited...

...especially given that we are about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. I hope Pegg incorporates as many of the original actors into the story as possible as a nod to their hard work and endearing appeal for half a century. I only wish Leonard Nimoy had lived to take part in what hopefully will be a fun and exciting testament to the masterwork that is Star Trek.

NOW...

you have my attention. Pegg's movies have always been entertaining but this is very cool to hear that Roddenberry's legacy is not going to be forgotten and carried forward. The first two rebooted Trek's were good but there were things missing. Hopefully Pegg will take the lead and bring back the old spirit.

Was the original series really western in space? I've only seen a handful of episodes, but I never got that. Star Wars and Firefly I get, but not Star Trek.
Anyway, I'd like to get back to more science fiction with this series, so I'm hoping this is goes in the right direction.

The writer didn't explain it correctly. It was supposed to be like those wagon train shows( and there was a show actually called Wagon Train). The people in those shows just basically traveled America with either a destination in mind or no destination while trying to find the best place to settle down and build a community. Of course in those travels there would also be shootouts and fights for survival.

Does that mean they'll produce a Star Trek film that isn't based on the outline for Wrath of Kahn for the first time since 1982?

I trust in Pegg and this talented cast to give us another go around of fun and excitement. I mean the possibilities are endless with how the second one ended.

"where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a more enlightened generation."
lets see they changed that for the next generation in 1987, 2015-1987 = 28 years ago.
he was born in 1970, STOS last first run show aired 1969.
AND at the time the term "man" was used to refer to mankind. It wasn't until 1984 we started to address gender bias in party line right speak.

Hopefully this is hinting at something new. Not just retreads of old villains we have been living with for 50 years. Sure the Klingons, Borg, Romulans, etc are cool but seriously this is the Universe we are talking about give us a new threat or allie. Even though the concept is a familiar one, the stories that could be told are endless.

This is good. The second one, while I enjoyed it overall despite the plot holes, took the franchise down a much darker path than the first. I think taking the franchise back to it's roots will give it some longevity. They can still have some action scenes and space battles, but just don't make that the basis of the movie. First and foremost, the story needs to be about exploring new planets.

I think light hearted is the next logical step. The first was fun with an edge, the second was darker and more pessimistic (but enjoyable), this one should be hopeful.

Scares me a bit, but I hope it will we better than ST2.
Bring Klingons! Bring Adventure without ridiculous action! Bring greatness and character to the characters! And please take back the "we can beam onto another planet from anywhere" (because it makes spaceships obsolete)!
