Strike Back below!
by: George Merchan Dec. 17, 2009

A couple of months ago, Bryan Singer himself said he was talking to Fox about possibly returning to the X-Men franchise, one that's fallen in the eyes of fans and critics since the director's departure following X2.

Well, today while at the Los Angeles premiere of AVATAR, Singer confirmed that he has indeed signed on to do X-MEN: FIRST CLASS! Hear it from the man himself in the video below (just click the marker in the timeline to jump straight to Singer's part).

Extra Tidbit: Glad as I am that Singer is back, I'm not entirely sold on the idea behind FIRST CLASS. Though I would've simply preferred an X-MEN 4, I'm happy that the franchise that was so successful for Fox once will now regain its direction.

It will be interesting to see what he can do with what is a relatively new series. If you factor in that it uses Iceman, Angel, Cyclops, Beast and Marvelgirl (Jean Grey) while the previous movies state that Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey and Beast were the original members. Will it be a step forward or a step backwards in the grand scheme of things? Looking forward to figuring that one out.

It could work
Cyclops, Jean, Emma Frost, Beast, Storm, Professor Xavier and Magneto. Oh and they should probably have other villains like the Blob, the Toad, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

I suppose this is good news. In the past week I've finally watched all three X-Men films for the first time. The third one just wasn't as good as the first two. Desperate
Singer is apparently desperate for love after a disappointing couple of years. Something about this feels cheap. And honestly, who cares about X-Men at this point, it had its fun in the sun. Move on Singer.

Wow...I never thought this would happen.

There's so many awesome directions they could go with X-Men, I don't see the point in making a prequel. It feels like they're giving up on the franchise, but with Singer back on, it'll be worth checking out. I can't really get excited about First Class, but hopefully this will lead to a real sequel.

My thoughts on this...
This is great news, but it’s a little upsetting that we have to endure yet another origin story. I’m not disgusted by the idea though, as long as it’s handled right and not made to appeal to teens, if you know what I’m saying. I don’t need to see Zac Efron as Cyclops and Vanessa Hudgens as Storm going off on some AWESOME adventure together as teenagers. That would hurt.

The people who complain about Bryan Singer as a director need to re-watch THE USUAL SUSPECTS and APT PUPIL.

The man has immense, immense talent.

I think the first X-MEN film and SUPERMAN RETURNS were less than what they could have been, but not because of Singer’s failings as a director. Fox didn’t exactly give him a massive budget to work with on the first X-MEN, and I actually really love a lot of what he did with that introductory film – especially with regards to Wolverine and his introduction, his first encounter with Professor Xavier, the casting of Patrick Stewart, etc. Singer did a LOT right and people forget that.

A lot of people love the second film, so I don’t feel the need to defend that.

As for SUPERMAN RETURNS, the film itself was really well done – the problem stemmed from the fact that it was so reverential to Richard Donner’s universe that it felt tame and somewhat cheesy. It’s not what people wanted. I’m not apologizing for the film, because I was the first to walk out saying I really wanted more out of the first SUPERMAN movie of the 21st century… but it is far from a piece of shit.

Look at DRAGONBALL Z and then look at SUPERMAN RETURNS and you can see the difference between a piece of shit film and a disappointing one.

Sorry for the essay, I just felt this needed to be said.

I completely agree with your thoughts on the first film. It was made with a very low budget, I'm sure the studio didn't really have faith in it since the comic book film was a new thing. But it completely delivered. I was pretty young when it came out but I was obessed with the animated show. I saw the movie opening night in theaters and was blown away. Even now I watch it and still feel that same way. So I never really understood the negative responses Ive seen about it. In my opinion they translated the story into a realistic setting the best way they could. My only problem with it has always been the way they handled Sabretooth.

As X2 it completely outdid everything that I loved about the first one. I would say that X2 is tied with The Dark Knight for my favorite comic book film.

I mean the first two were good and all... I just feel that Marvel Studios raised the bar for Superhero flicks. And after the monstrosity that was Wolverine... Fox need to go new and fresh with the "New Class!"

So this "First Class" is essentially a prequel and they're re-jumping it?

Glad Singer's on board regardless. No one else has displayed much of a grasp of these characters.

Jesus Everyones a Film Critic
It seems everyone is a film critic even before a movie comes out. I for one am very happy Singer is back for the new x-men, he's excellent with those characters. Superman Returns was crap but I see what he was trying to do; he was trying to do Superman 3 for Donner in his light and it didn't work out. Superman Returns was crap but I see what he was trying to do; he was trying to do Superman 3 for Donner in his light and it didn't work out. Donners Superman was great for its time and still is,especially the new cut for part II, but alas it was a risky decision to go in the direction he did or lazy but I don't think he is lazy, and he made a mistake and now everyone wants to chastise the poor guy(rich guy!) for one bad film. I know it'll be great and to everyone that doesn't think so, just wait till the movie comes out to turn into a little Gene Siskel please! Everyone else that doesn't like him just go "wank off to some phish records" Please of course

Dont know
Never like someone who leaves to do something better on his own and it turns out to be complete crap (Superman) and then he comes back with his hat in his hand. That rubs me wrong, it seems its all about regaining his commercial success so he can try to make another crap movie. And screw First Class bc there cant be a Wolverine bc no one knew him until X-Men 1, so do X-Men4 or wolverine 2.

Just can't get excited.
I want to be excited for this, but the new class idea just has me sort of blah. I don't understand it, so we are getting an origin story after three movies?

Plus, can they even have angel in the team since he was a kid in the third movie? Just doesn't really interest me.

REMAKE
With all the remakes these days why not simply keep part 1 and 2 intact but remake part 3 as if it never happened, just ignore it, its best for everyone that way and its the only good way to go from here, or let someone wake up at the beginning of part 4 realizing that part 3 was just a nightmare

I'm so glad that Singer is coming back, but why the hell doesn't he make X-Men 4! He can easily undo every poor decision they made. First of all X3 showed that the cure might not be permanent judging by Mags at the end. So have Rogue's power return but stronger than ever. Maybe she accidently touches a mutant with the ability of super strength and flight so she can finally kick some ass....

Maybe she accidently touches a mutant with the ability of super strength and flight so she can finally kick some ass. Secondly bring in Mr.Sinister as the big bad. They could definitely make him work if they tone him down a bit. Explain that Jean never actually killed Cyclops and that Mr. Sinister found his body by the lake. All of this time Sinister has been experimenting with Cyclops trying to build the perfect mutant, but one piece is missing: Jean's DNA. So Sinister and his goons mount an attack on the X-mansion to dig up Jean's body. With Singer at the helm again it could actually end the franchise on a good note. Hell he can even have Jean be resurrected and we can finally see the Phoenix we were always meant to see.

As much as I think Singer will make a good job, the last two terrible x men movies have killed mine and I dare say alot of people's interests. They can only do a prequal as well, seen as Cyclops and Xavier are dead, The X mens founder and leader. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. They'll be no Nightcrawler though, thumbs down already.

X-Men either needs to be over with or start anew. Singer did a good job on the first two, but I would love to see some new blood jump in there. And when I say new blood I mean new blood that has talent in it. No more Ratners.

Also am I the only one that would like to see Singer go back to smaller films like Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil. Enough with the superheros.
