Singer's Excalibur

08.20.2009

After a bit of relative downtime (like waiting for his VALKYRIE to finally get released), Bryan Singer seems to be making up for it with a whole bunch of projects.

Besides his planned BATTLESTAR GALACTICA remake movie, the ex-X-MEN director is now developing an update of EXCALIBUR for Warner Bros. The project would be a new version of John Boorman's 1981 film, which approached the King Arthur legend with magic and fantasy. Too bad he wasn't doing Boorman's ZARDOZ instead.

This EXCALIBUR seems to be separate from the recently announced Knights of the Round Table script being penned by dangerously creative comic writer Warren Ellis.

It should be noted that Singer is only involved as a producer on both BATTLESTAR and EXCALIBUR, but could possibly direct one, both or neither. The consensus seems to be that his next directing effort will be JACK THE GIANT KILLER, a darker version of the classic beanstalk fairy tale, while unconfirmed rumors claim he's also interested in the X-MEN: FIRST CLASS prequel/reboot/spinoff.

Extra Tidbit: The '81 EXCALIBUR featured Liam Neeson, Helen Mirren, Gabriel Byrne and Patrick Stewart, which should at least merit a Netflix.

Excalibur is one of my favorite films concerning the King Arthur legend . It was no doubt made for adults , sex , violence , incest , adultery .

The cinematography was fantastic , the setting was beautiful and the set design sublime .

If they can come even close to the brilliance of the original , it should be something special . I don't want some wussy pg 13 version , although i'm sure that's what we will get . That's fine because an unrated blu can take care of that .

Back to X-MEN

All sound like awsome projects but if he's considering returning to the X-MEN franchise then I'm totally there even though I would like to see him continue the saga instead of rebooting it, any ways I hope he has some sort of involvement in the next X-MEN movie project, he needs to return!

Loved Excalubur when i was a kid, and i think this could be really cool. I didnt even know that warren ellis was writing a Knights movie...now i dont know which one to root for ha ha.

I really really hope the battlestar movie dosent happen and his jack the giant killer sounds pretty sweet actually. As for first Class, If it has to happen i would like to see Singer return to the X-men. Its to bad they fed up X3 because i Still would rather see an X4

I would love a Jack the Giant Killer remake!!! Just not by Singer though I'd prefer Del Toro.

I wish Singer would do more films. He's one of the few big action filmmakers who actually makes his movies interesting enough to watch multiple times. Even Superman Returns in my opinion. I would love to see a rival film to Excalibur. Not a childrens version, but another strong film.

Whatever he does, count me in. He hasn't done me wrong yet.

Boorman's movie is still probably my favorite telling of the King Arthur legend. Bloody, sexy, insane, and finds room for almost the entire legend. Having said that, it is dated. I haven't read the source book Boorman adapted from, but I can't help but think that, like the Robin Hood legend, there oughta be another way to tell the story than riffing on a previously-made film.

This news seriously made my day

I absolutely adore the original "Excalibur" yet I will be the first to admit that it is an obviously flawed movie (i.e. a good deal of the dialouge, very uneven pacing). I didn't much care for Superman Returns but I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Singer's other films. He's without a doubt one of my favorite directors working today.
