Skyfall finds its Q in young Ben Whishaw

Nov. 28, 2011by: Paul Tassi

No gorgeous Bond girls to look at today, but we do have an important new casting tidbit from SKYFALL that's worth hearing about.

Tech wizard Q has been missing from the rebooted Bond series in both films CASINO ROYALE and QUANTUM OF SOLACE, but apparently it's time for the man to make a return, albeit in a form far different than we're used to seeing.

Previously played by older actors like the late Desmond Llewelyn and then briefly John Cleese, the mantle of Q now falls to a younger man, Ben Whishaw. At only 31, he's a new look for the character, and though you might not recognize him offhand, I highly recommend you check out PERFUME in which he stars if you haven't already.

An interesting choice, and one that signifies that this new Bond series tries to marry the new with the old in many ways. Do you think Q's new look will work for the film?

Extra Tidbit: I'm not sure why, but just by looking at him I feel like this guy should be The Doctor someday.

As a young engineer, I actually really like this idea.

I know it goes against tradition and the grain of the Bond series a bit for a very memorable character (and as a lifelong Bond fan, I must admit a bit an uncomfortable change upon first glance), but as many of the older engineers and professors I've met always say, "You will be responsible for creating things that we haven't even dreamed up yet."

It's it the hands of these new, young inventors that the future in technology rests. I

Desmond brought a certain sense of dignity and class to the role of Q. I really hope they aren't abandoning that in favor of the cliche "nerdy/awkward tech guy." Other than that, I don't really have a problem with the casting.

Don't mind the casting at all, I've seen him in "Perfume", and he did quite well. I just hope this doesn't mean Bond movies will get too cheesy with "Q" in the picture now. I hope this means that the gadgets will actually be BOTH practical and bad-ass i.e. The Nolan Batman films.

Any news about Q's function? I doubt they're gonna go completely old school with ridiculous gadgets, but I assume Bond's mission will require some specific tasks at some point that Q's techno-engineering savvy will come in handy for?

I love this change. Whishaw is a great actor, hopefully he gets to do more acting then just showing Bond how to use things.

hmm..

Wait, wasn't Q's character also a former Army Major or something? Looking at this guy I don't think, age-wise, he qualifies.
I dunno maybe they'll take the Batman Begins route and give him a lower rank to start with.

I like the approach they are taking to this character. For a while I was thinking Simon Pegg would be the only person to play Q but he's already playing a Q-esque character in Mission: Impossible. I think this this guy will be awesome, he was really good in I'm Not There. They seem to know what they are doing with this movie.

Loved him too in Bright Star, I'm Not There, and in his previous collaboration with Craig in Layer Cake. He's proven himself to be always a fun actor to watch.
