Slade slams Twilight

05.04.2009

David Slade When 30 DAYS OF NIGHT director David Slade accepted the job of directing the upcoming third installment in the TWILIGHT franchise, ECLIPSE, he likely saw it as an opportunity to bring to this thus far tame franchise a little bit of the terrifyingly bad ass he brought to 30 DAYS. Which is what Brendon over at "Slashfilm" caught him expressing in a radio show, albeit in a rather, let's say, colorful way. He says:

…and so yesterday we were trying to find a movie to see and we’d seen all the good ones, you know, and there was nothing really coming out this weekend that we really fancied at all and having directed a vampire film and really gone for something completely different to the kind of romantic, you know, repressed hormone teen vampire movie we really weren’t interested in seeing Twilight but a lot of people said lets go so I wrote - “Twilight drunk? No, not even drunk. Twilight on acid? No, not even on acid? Twilight at gun point? Just shoot me.”

The "I wrote" part refers to what he wrote on his Twitter account, which has been deleted. What he should do is go on the radio and say something like "I still wouldn't watch that prissy piece of shit. That's why I wanted to direct this thing. To add some balls to this franchise!"

Extra Tidbit: Slade has directed music videos for Aphex Twin, 3 Colours Red, Maxim, Stone Temple Pilots, POD, The Stereophonics, Muse, System of a Down, The Music, TRUSTcompany and lots more.

Hmmm...

Well, if Slade wants to throw in the blood and guts, this would be the film of the quartet for him. A ravenous vampire army that nearly turns Seattle upside-down gets torn and ripped to pieces by a large pack of wolves. Ofcourse, these movies are going to make hundreds of millions of dollars, so he doesn't need to bite the hand that will let him have his way.

UPDATE

Twilight Lexicon received an email from "Eclipse' director David Slade, addressing the remarks he had made about 'Twilight', that spread their way across the web yesterday.

“Dear Laura and Lori

I would be grateful if you could distribute this statement to the fans of Twilight:I would like to address some statements that I made regarding Twilight.

When I made these comments, I had neither seen the film nor read the books. I was promoting a comedy short film that I had made for Xbox and every pop culture subject was seen as a possible comedy target. I was being silly and none of the statements were from the heart.

Of course, I have since seen the movie and read the books and was quickly consumed with the rich storytelling and the beautifully honest characters that Stephenie Meyer created.

I would like to reassure everyone involved that I am invested in making the best film that I am humanly capable of, and that I am acutely aware of the power of the original books we serve.

Please be rest assured this statement is absolutely from the heart.

yours sincerely

DAVID SLADE”

Anne Rice Rocks

Hokuto excellent point about the Vampire Chronicles. No one can do justice to a vampire story the way Mrs. Rice did. I read the entire series and still haven't read anything remotely close or as good.

I liked 30 Days of Night ...

...and I'm curious to see what he does with the third movie, regardless of how he feels about a movie he didn't have anything to do with.

I love 30 days of Night and I really hope Slade can inject that same type of style and emotion into Eclipse, but let's face it, this is going to be PG-13, because the target audience are tweeners so we'll have to wait and see it he can find that balance like Alfonso Cuaran did with HP3

I hope the third film takes a seriously freakish departure from the first two and gets crazy fucking violent, with all sorts of crazy satirical-suedo sexual, obscenely graphic, hard edged shit all in gratuitous masses.

Like the uncut Robocop 1 multiplied by ten thousand of the shitty Twilight series.

Like Slade's third film takes us and all this romancy-fancy shit into the fucking depths of hell, and brings us back again with our skin charred and cracked, in a storm of salt, and we're

I hope that's what his third installment brings.

Slade is right, the movie is terrible. But the books are apparently very good. Alfonso Cuaron directed Azkaban, which rocked, but the first two Potter movies sucked.

The guy isn't trashing Twilight.. he's trashing that horrible piece of cinematic diarrhea Twilight the movie. I bet you that Chris Nolan said the same thing about watching Batman and Robin before he started filming Begins.

That being said, I hate everything about this shitty franchise so it's funny to me to see a director hate it as much as I do!

I am no fan of the series, it never interested me and I just stay away because of that. However, I think it would just be better for the actual fans if people who were passionate about the work were involved with it as actors, writers, directors etc.

No one would want an actor or director doing Iron Man or Batman if they didn't like it at all.

KevinR1990...

Did Pattinson actually say that wish fulfillment comment? The dude went up about 20 notches in my book.

Anyone noticing a trend here?

A lot of the people involved with the Twilight movies seem to be doing it for reasons other than a love for the books. Both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are on record as saying that they did Twilight for the money, and the latter has even called Bella and Edward "wish fulfillment" for Stephenie Meyer. And now you've got David Slade, the director of the upcoming third movie, saying he wouldn't watch Twilight if someone with a gun forced him to. This has officially made me interested in
