Smith is conservative

Apr. 7, 2007by:
Kevin Smith fans have been waiting long and been waiting hard for something completely different genre-wise, from their bearded and bespectacled hero. Smith is more in touch with his fans than probably any other director out there, so the promises have been plentiful, from his rumored Green Lantern project to his much talked-about horror film.

Well the chaps over at Rotten Tomatoes UK had the chance to speak to Smith, and not only is the horror project on its way, but it has a title too, RED STATE. And yes, thats a deliberate political reference on K-Smis part, as the film is inspired by the extreme Christian fundamentalism rearing its head in todays America.

Smith says the movie isnt a straight-up horror movie. He says in the interview: "It's weird because for a few months I've been saying 'horror movie' and technically it is, but it's also not a very traditional horror movie in the sense that people have been asking me, 'Is it a slasher movie? Is it like the Japanese horror flicks?' It'd be much easier to just show it to them when I'm done and be like, 'This is what I meant.'"

Makes sense, doesnt it? Wed all be an ignorant bunch of movie fans to expect a regular horror movie from Smith. In the interview he mentions using one of them intense evangelical preachers as his villain. Good call, because those dudes are truly more terrifying than some punk in a William Shatner mask. Read the rest of the interview HERE.

Extra Tidbit: In case you haven't seen the recent full length trailer, Kevin Smith has a small role in the upcoming LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD. That's DIE HARD 4.0 for the uninitiated.

Relax...

I'm Christian myself, but that does not mean that i'm gonna get all up in arms about this. As far as I understand, he is not attacking the religion, just simply a group of people, in this religion, that may or may not be taking things too far.

Im no christian and I didnt like Dogma... and ironically David Arquette did something similar with Tripper where a conservative guy kills hippies, but yeah "intense evangelical preachers" sounds scarier.

BLAH

Although I like Smith, Dogma wasn't one of his better films and as a Christian, I can see this film being too offensive and going too far. I am not looking forward to this one, but I will try to not judge it too much before I see a trailer for it.

Kevin Coolness

Honestly people, Kevin doesn't go out to make movies to please everyone, especially the "Christian Movement". Dogma was fantastic and funny. I'm looking forward to seeing TWO Smith movies in 08!

Christian Right?

If Kevin Smith gave a shit about the Christian right I'm sure he wouldn't have made Dogma.

He is creative and original and I can't WAIT to see this! Go Kevin Go!

I don't like it when fun directors like Smith go political. Yeah, you're really going to win over the Christian right by making fun of them. Ugh, I hate stupid crap like this.

About time someone took on this subject! And doing it as a horror film is even better!

Nice

Sounds like it could be kinda cool... deffinately interesting.

Oh and... "one of them intense evangelical preachers"? What are you some kind of country bumpkin? Should be one of those. Am I knit picking? Yeah... deal with it.
