Smurfs: The Movie

Don't pretend like this is a surprise. Everything that's been a toy, comic, cartoon or videogame in the past century will eventually find its way back to us in full-motion form, courtesy of cash-loving Hollywood execs.

Yes, the little blue forest-dwelling creatures known as THE SMURFS will come to computer-generated life thanks to Columbia and Sony. The creation of Belgian cartoonist Peyo expanded from comics to an unavoidable series of figurines, games, toys, ice shows, songs and cartoons, and will become a live-action/CG combo a la ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS. Astonishingly, this hasn't happened until now.

Columbia co-president Doug Belgrad actually made the following statement: "We're very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the other smurftastic Smurfs in all of their 'three-apple-tall' glory."

For those who are somehow unfamiliar with the world of Smurfs, the popular property involves a village of small blue shirtless dudes with singular defining traits who spend their days avoiding the evil sorcerer Gargamel and getting shot down by the only single chick in town.
Extra Tidbit: I used to watch the cartoon religiously as a kid, but never really knew why. Only in retrospect did I come to realize the truth: I'm infatuated with blue-skinned blonde babes. The therapy helps.
