Snikt! The Wolverine will be directed by James Mangold

06.15.2011

Marvel's adamantium-laced anti-hero has been slowly clawing his way through development for a sequel, but THE WOLVERINE finally has a director.

Deadline says that James Mangold (3:10 TO YUMA, COP LAND) will sharpen Hugh Jackman's fist-knives for the movie, which is set almost entirely in Japan and follows the popular 80s comic story pitting Logan against a ninja clan. Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) penned the script.

Mangold (whose last movie was KNIGHT AND DAY)  was on Fox's recent wish-list of possibilities to replace director Darren Aronofsky, who departed the project a few months back.

Filming is expected to start in the fall, which means the finished film could conceivably carve up theaters next summer.

3:10 to Yuma was underrated and raw at times... Knight and Day had it's moments and seemed to at least try to be different then other movies of that genre.. and Cop Land is overlooked but gritty and layered..

I'll support this decision.

Well said - I completely agree with everything, especially Cop Land.

Reboot or sequel, I think it will be somewhat stand-alone, and Mangold is a pretty good choice for director.

I'm on board with this. In my mind, especially after seeing FIRST CLASS and with DEADPOOL in the development stages, ORIGINS never happened. Which is a good thing! I know Jackman gave it his all but the whole production was executed poorly. I do hope they give some clear indication of Wolvie's past while at the same time forgetting about ORIGINS. LET'S GO MANGOLD! YOU'RE UP!

Meh. This movie needed in an auteur. Mangold has directed some good flicks but doesnt direct action very well or bring out his beautiful locations. (Knight and Day).

After Aronofsky left, there's really no one else who could have made me as excited about a Wolverine film. But you could do worse than Mangold. X-men first class was a step in the right direction, and hopefully this movie will be too.

Meh

James Mangold is very hit and miss, and his hits aren't all that great. This is the kind of director I expected Fox to go for after Origins. Huge step down from Aronofsky.

I believe you are confusing bad directing with a bad script/bad acting. Mangold's style is solid, but he gets weak scripts sometimes (K&D). McQuarrie will deliver in that department and Jackman can handle the rest.

They have a good director now, a great script(apparently) the perfect story to adapt (Japan) a superb lead in Hugh Jackman and a big budget! It's a can't miss...get it done!

Now that there will never be a Darren Aronofsky Woverine film, I just don't care.

Great choice!

YES!!! There is hope for Wolvie yet! I've enjoyed the films I've seen Mangold do: Walk The Line, 3:10 To Yuma, Identity, and I even found Knight & Day pretty fun. I think this is a GREAT fit for Wolverine, much better than the uber-pretentious Aronofsky. Sorry people who are bummed about him leaving, but I'm kind of glad I don't have to deal with hipsters sitting around me in the theater sipping on Starbucks and tweeting on their iPhones during the film.

Mangold is pretty much a director for hire and doesn't have a whole lot of vision, and so I can't see this as being anything special.

Interesting. He's a good director, but I didn't expect someone like him to do it. Generally, he gets really good performances from his actors and focuses a lot on character development and story, so that's a huge plus.

This is a great opportunity to reboot the Wolverine origin story and totally ignore what happened in origins wolverine, and don't add unnecessary x-men characters!

The films gonna be MANGOLDEN!!!! :P

Identity, Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma. Period!!!! And since Mangold has worked with Jackman in Kate & Leopold, there is a well established relationship. Like Aranofsky and Jackman had for the Fountain.

no hope

I wanna be positive but mangold flubbed with 'Knight and Day' and I thought wolverine origins would be tight based on gavin hood but it blew, so Im pretty sure fox will get under mangolds skin (though i think aronosky would hold them back) and it'll suck

Mangold will do. Still a shame that Aranofsky punked out, but I'm just fine with Mangold. On a side note, hopefully after this they'll give Wolverine a REST. Fox needs to stop milking him. How about a "First Class" sequel? That was the first one that felt like a legit "X-Men" movie rather than a "Wolverine movie that features a few characters from the X-Men comics playing second fiddle" movie.

Love 3:10 to Yuma and COPLAND

So this is great news. Hopefully its a fresh start though, with no ties to Origins continuity just like FIRST CLASS was.

Mangold is a hired hand hack nigh indeterminable from contemporaries such as Marc Forster who can't keep his shit together for 120 minutes. Recent example of "Knight & Day", perhaps the best concept Mangold has worked with thus far - he can't seem to grip the ironies or subtleties and just goes for uneven, desensitized, meaningless action. Excitement factor for "The Wolverine" has gone from 11 to 0.

After the abominable last Wolvie film they really need to get a first class director and let him tell a meaningful story about the unique character of Logan. Not Meh-gold.

It's like you've dated a supermodel yet you only had sex with a 'normal' girl.

It's all good but you will always wonder what the sex could have been with the supermodel.

This is how I feel about Mangold after Aronofsky.

unless

it turns out that that script is absolutely amazing and faithful to the original wolverine comic story they're allegedly basing this movie on then i will remain impartial until i see a trailer.

but honestly, losing aronofsky was a big fucking letdown and hard to come back from...

I'm pretty sure Mangold can deliver the goods. Lets hope Fox takes a cue from First Class and doesn't meddle too much.

Its not so much WHO they pick for director; moreso, how much control fox is going to exert over this to make sure it drags in the masses. Which means less character development and more explosions, one dimensional characters and useless cameos. Dont fuck this up FOX. First Class did it right.

I have renewed faith in the X-Men franchise now after First Class so hopes are that this new Wolverine movie picks up after or during First Class, ignoring the first four films and setting up a new continuity.

Continuity

I am curious as to what they are going to do with X-Men First Class Part II or whatever they are going to call it. X-Men the Last Stand gave us Jean Grey's origin and then Cyclops' origin was forced into Wolverine. I've heard people say that Scott and Jean are kids in the early sixties and that the sequel will take place in the seventies and have them be teenagers and old enough for Xavier to recruit into the X-Men. The question is how much of the first four X-Men movies will be ignored in

good chopice i believe, even if the story did not make much sense Knight & day had some great action in it & 3:10 To Yuma told a great story & had some action as well & Identity is very underrated. Thats pretty much all this movie needed was a director who could tell a story & direct action.
