So who will be writing Ridley Scott's new Blade Runner film?

Sep. 27, 2011by:

I don't think anyone yet knows exactly what Ridley Scott is planning to do when he returns to the BLADE RUNNER franchise after almost thirty years. Heck, I'm not even sure if Sir Ridley knows what he wants to do, but he's found a guy who's going to help him figure that out. Twitch Film is reporting that Scott has been in talks with Scott Z. Burns (CONTAGION) about coming aboard to script what will become his BLADE RUNNER sequel / prequel / spinoff / reboot, etc.

Just based of what Scott is doing with PROMETHEUS and the ALIEN universe, you can probably expect something similar here. A film exploring the same themes in the same universe as the original without being directly attached in any major way.

Burns has become a recent favorite of Steven Soderbergh, having worked with him on both THE INFORMANT! and CONTAGION and currently collaborating on THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

So if you're Scott Z. Burns and you've been tasked by Sir Ridley Scott to write a first draft for some type of BLADE RUNNER movie, where do you start? Use the Strike Back section below to pitch your version of BLADE RUNNER, be it any type of film - prequel, sequel, whatever - you think would work best. And readers, upvote your favorite concept and I'll send that person a shiny prize.

Interesting...

Well first off it would be insulting if the writer decided to do a "prequel" of sorts which depicts Roy and his group of Replicants from the time that they escape to reaching Earth again. The depiction could never match the beautiful story that Rutger gives it at the end of BLADE RUNNER. I can almost guarantee that was the first thought in the writer's mind cause there would be so much material to work with.
No I think the story should revolve around a sequel of sorts depicting another group

No I think the story should revolve around a sequel of sorts depicting another group of Replicants living on an off-world colony only months or maybe even years after the events of the first film. Over time, rumours and whispers travel across the galaxy to different colonies that there was a Replicant and his followers who questioned their origins and stood up against their creators for the right to survive. Over time humans begin noticing that Replicants are behaving strangely over time and standing against them as this belief inspires them to the same goal.
The story itself would focus on a single Replicant leader (one living on the closest off-world colony to Earth) who has become tortured by his beliefs and the thought that all of his people have been pre-programmed with an extremely short life-span as they deserve so much better. He witnesses over time as his friends die unnaturally. This drives him mad to the point where he recruits his fellow Replicants as they begin building an army of artificial lifeforms to stand against their creators for the prize of longer life or to die trying. Along the way though he travels this story with a young boy who he has become close friends with and is the only positive attachment he has to his creators. He takes this boy with him as he becomes a very important part of his character development. Colony by colony, Replicants begin disappearing from their colonies leaving a trail of human death in their wake but with unknown intentions of their leader whom the story will be the primary focus and the horrific torture he endures at the hands of his beliefs. He even grows a great hatred towards those Replicants who have been given a gift of long life because they are deemed special.
On Earth the disappearance of the Replicants on the off-world colonies and at home becomes a massive concern to the security of all humans throughout the quadrant as we're introduced to a young, determined yet naive and stubborn Blade Runner who is assigned with a fellow group of enforcers and investigators to track down and learn the true intentions of the Replicants. Will they simply leave or will they come for their revenge?
This is the basic story outline and there would be a great deal of character development and story arcs over the usual crazy sci-fi action. It's a story of a Replicant once again tortured by the same belief as Roy Batty but this time holds the future of his race in his hands.
That's how I would go with my first story idea off the top of my head. It would not involve Deckard in any way other than being mentioned in the stories of his battle with Roy and his group of Replicants. The young Blade Runner in the new story knows of these events and there could even be a special scene where he travels out to see Deckard to learn of what the Replicants are really like and what he should know to stop them. However Deckard now has a much deeper understanding of who they are and how precious life was to them. So it would help deeply in the character development for the young Blade Runner as the story progresses. Of course this would only work if Harrison would return for the short appearance and if you believe he never was a Replicant after the first film which I believe he wasn't. Just a thought.

I'd like to see what Roy Batty saw : "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate." I always wondered why there were "attack ships". Who were they fighting?

I think it's better to imagine in your own mind from what he's saying. Use your own imagination, it's so much more powerful.

Well, he could start by Phillip K. Dick's novel, which is NOTHING like Ridley Scott's film. If they decided to make a movie out of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, it would be an entirely different film.

Or he could go in an entirely different way, what happened to Deckard and his girl when they ran off?

Actually, a number of the events depicted are the same, but the context is all screwed up. Still a pretty great movie.

I'd rather see a film kinda like what Prometheus appears to be: something that takes place in the same universe (like Soldier did) with the same tech and maybe locations, but nothing with Deckard/Rachael because we've finished their story...IF this damn thing hasta be made in the first place, which I don't think it does.

If I'm Scott Burns and I've been hired to pen another Blade runner movie, I'd first thank Ridley Scott, tell him what an impression he's made on me during his career, then, in the most polite and open-minded way possible, ask why he wants to make another Blade Runner movie. Or, really, what he wants to say that he might've failed to convey in the original.

Focus on a new set of refugee replicants trying to survive in the advanced dystopian settings...no deckard, no rachael...new replicants, with their own plight. throw in a human sympathizer,too..and follow their story.

The new movie should have every person on Earth replaced with a Roy Batty copy. Then we can have shitloads of Rutger Hauers trying to out-psycho one another for 2 hours.

The new movie will revisit the events of the original but from the perspective of the dream unicorn.
