Solo writer confirms Lando’s pansexuality in new Star Wars spinoff film

While a selection of Star Wars fans are still holding out for the possibility of Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) becoming a romantic item as part of the interstellar saga's canon, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY screenwriter, Jonathan Kasdan, has recently revealed that Lando Calrissian is pansexual.

While engaging in a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Kasdan, who wrote the script alongside his father, Lawrence Kasdan, confirmed Calrissian's sexual preference to the outlet. If you happen to be unfamiliar with the term, identifying as pansexual simply means you're an individual who is not limited by sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender or gender identity. When asked about Calrissian's open-mindedness, Jonathan Kasdan replied, "I would say yes. There's a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee Williams' [portrayal of Lando's] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it's time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of."

In the past, Disney has painted themselves as reluctant to embrace the LGBTQ community outright, with few of their characters exhibiting queer tendancies and never actually labeled as such to the public.. As a recent example, you need only look to 2017's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, when Josh Gad's LeFou caused a stir among concerned parents, simply because he shared a celebratory dance with another male character on screen. Perhaps the House of Mouse is finally ready to stand behind more sexually-fluid characters like Lando, who could act as something of a revolutionary for the studio, in time.

"He doesn't make any hard and fast rules. I think it's fun. I don't know where it will go," Jonathan says about Glover's Lando.

Regardless of who Lando chooses to party with in a galaxy far, far away, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY will arrive in theaters May 25th.
