UPDATE: Deadline now says that Paula Patton won the role in what is still being called a "franchise reboot".

8.28.10: Aside from who's involved so far, nobody seems to know what the hell the next MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie really is.

We know that it will star Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner, and that JJ Abrams is producing and THE INCREDIBLES and IRON GIANT mastermind Brad Bird is directing (a fact I'm still wrestling to believe). Apparently it's some kind of reboot or relaunch that won't even be called MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE in any way.

Whatever the case, it will undoubtedly involve some kind of tech-heavy international espionage, and will have at least one sexy lady to offset the machismo. Deadline says that actresses Paula Patton (DEJA VU, PRECIOUS), Lauren German (HOSTEL II) and Kristin Kreuk ("Smallville", STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI *giggle*) are all currently testing for the role of a young female operative.

No word yet on how any previous members like Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames or Jonathan Rhys Meyers will fit in now that the franchise seems to be getting restarted somehow.

Oh crap!! Does this mean that Kristin Kreuk is free to do Smallville now? Ugh! Lana = sucky storylines and ridiculous angst. Out the 3 ladies, Patton was definitely the best choice, IMO, but I still wished the part went to Kreuk. Oh well.

This is fine and all, but I wanted Kreuk for the part.

This movie is going to kick ass.

Is the best thing they could name this flick. The idea of the trailers it would produce would be awesome-hilarious.

From a purely selfish point of view I hope Kristin Kreuk gets the part so that she can stay far, far away from Smallville. The show is in it's final season and I'd like it to end with a 'wow, that was awesome!!', not a 'WTF were the writers thinking?!!', like the last time she was on the show.

The only way I could see this new non-M:I thing work with Cruise is that he he's promoted to desk work and has to put together a new team. PS I'd go with Patton, girl's got it.

Kruek proved she sucks in Chun Li, however she was surprisingly good on Chuck in her guest spot there.

Boring!
First off, why isn't Brad Bird directing another great movie for Pixar instead of this garbage? Second, Tom Cruise officially lost his mojo after M:I-3, and a fourth installment, however "different", will not change that.

Wait, some of you actually WANT Kristin Kreuk to get the role? Have any of you seen her act? Tell you what – go to your nearest forest, pick out the prettiest oak tree you can find... and then stare at it for two hours. It'll have the same level of acting talent as Kristin Kreuk and might actually offer more genuine emotion. Sure the bark may look sexy as hell... but deep down you know it's...

i hope Kreuk or Patton gets it. Kristin needs a role in a decent big screen movie, and Patton is just drop dead gorgeous.

and i think they should get a better known female lead (if it actually is a female lead and not just what maggie q was in the last one). it might be cliche but..zoey saldana?

Paula Patton wouldbe my first pick. The only necessary one of the former team to bring back is Ving Rhames. Shoot, Luther Stickell is so cool he doesn't even have to DO anything, but there's a reason he's my favorite character from the franchise.

I want Kristen Kreuk to get the role. She'd be nice eye candy. Hopefully, they get Rhames, Pegg, and Meyers also onboard. Doesn't seem right to have a reboot or passing of the torch without the guys that brought us here.

Anyone but Kristen Kreuk. As we saw in "Street Fighter," the chick can't do action.

Smallville was only watchable when it was still about "Clark Kent before Superman". Now it's just "Superman... but not.." Oh, and Doomsday looked like butt.

I hate to say it but I think you gave up on Smallville at exactly the wrong time. The Supergirl seasons (7) sucked but Season 8 took it in a new direction. Clark sports the superman logo (be it less colorful), Doomsday showed up (altho I honestly think it was more an origin than the final battle, I think everytime he 'dies' he comes back bigger and badder) The Justice Society of America and Che...

And Clark and Lois are a full-on couple. It's becoming Superman. As foor Kreuk...I do agree with you there. Nice to look at but not the best actress. But if it's a mission impossible film it's likely she wouldn't have much acting required. The Damsel in Distress so-to-speak.

Yvonne Strahovski.
I want her to be the chick. She's definitely more skilled and hotter than the candidates up there

And on a side note, I don't care for Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
