Some suspicious Uncharted rumors: Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, Mark Wahlberg

Nov. 12, 2010by: Dave Davis

We know that filmmaker David O. Russell ultimately decided to direct a movie based on Sony's bestselling UNCHARTED games, but it sounds like Nathan Fillion's public (and justified) campaign to play main character Nathan Drake might not come to fruition.

Showbiz 411 says that Mark Wahlberg could be Russell's Drake, which honestly wouldn't be too surprising given their ongoing working relationship (THREE KINGS, I HEART HUCKABEES, THE FIGHTER). It would also be Wahlberg's second go at playing a videogame character (who could possibly forget MAX PAYNE?).

But things get weird: the site claims that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci could reunite yet again for the project. While De Niro would be perfect as the main character's cigar-chomping chum Sully, Pesci's potential part is a mystery.

Showbiz 411 also makes the bizarre comment that "the story will have something to do with antiquities dealers in New York", which isn't remotely close to either game's story -- the first UNCHARTED follows fortune hunter Drake and spunky reporter Elena on a quest for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold. We've already heard that Russell is rewriting the previous draft from Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (CONAN, COWBOYS & ALIENS), but that would be a significant deviation from the solid story foundation of the game(s).

But what's particularly amusing is the comment from the site's reporter Roger Friedman (who you may recall was previously fired from Fox News for reviewing a pirated copy of Fox's own X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) about Russell's rewrite of the script: "Word is the actual video game didn’t have much there aside from a concept and a name."

As the millions who've played the game can attest, it is actually perhaps the best example of a game written and presented like a big-budget Hollywood action blockbuster. So we should probably take the entire report with the standard prescription of Angelina Jolie's sleeper agent.

Extra Tidbit: What do you think of... well, all of this?

Bull. Shit. These games were so popular (so much so they practically made the PS3) mostly because the story was so good. What's the point of changing the story if the original works so well?

I kind of had a feeling they wouldn't go for Fillion...because they NEVER go for Fillion when they should. But Mark fucking Wahlberg? Are they insane?

the story doesn't matter. it had nothing to do with the actual story either. its about how well uncharted tells its story while perfectly blending it with great gameplay. which is what the movie will lack and therefore be, instantly, an inferior experience to the game.

oh man if this ends up being true

i'll be so sad. i mean, i know O'Russell is a pretty creative and talented guy, but I hope he can pick up on how attached fans of the games have become to the story and the characters...

it would be a cheap trick to just make a treasure hunter movie + call it 'Uncharted'

Wahlberg could be a good antagonist (if O'Russell can write a part that fits) but he's not Drake. Adrien Brody I also think would make a pretty great antagonist.

Fillion should be Drake though...

I'm out...

If Wahlberg's in I am out. I love the games and what makes them so successful is the charm. I like Wahlberg as an actor but he is no Drake nor will he -ever- be...Fillion is the best fit, he truly is. If he isn't Drake at least cast someone with charm. If Wahlberg is Drake I'm out, I am so so so out forever....

how hard is it?

how hard is it to follow the story/formula to a good game and translate it to the screen?? Why do all Hollywood studios do this to games. They completely FUCK up the source material, and THATS WHY they aren't successful.

Wahlberg cannot embody this character. He doesn't have the charm needed. If they turn Drake into a badass from the Bronx, maybe... but as the character stands in it's true incarnation (the two excellent games), Mark has no business touching the role. Fillion is perfect for it.

If they go with Marky Mark they might as well get Alec Baldwin to play Sully, Taylor Swift as Elena, and Sam Worthington to play the bad guy. Actually scratch that, Worthington as Drake. PERFECT. -__-

God...just another example of how a major studio decides to get "creative" with a video game franchise because it believes the actual story isn't good enough. For this very reason I hope they never make God of War or Red Dead Redemption into a movie because Hollywood with butcher them both.

Oh yes, and it definitely sucks that Fillion may not be given the chance to play Nathan Drake. The man was born to play that role!

Since I don't play video games and I know nothing about this game, Nathan Fillion would have been the only thing to bring me towards this movie.

Well if Nathan Fillion doesn't get the part I seriously doubt I will bother with it. He deserves such a film to prove himself, and has a HUGE cult following. Mark Wahlberg certainly does NOT suit the role of drake. You need the cocky swagger and charm of Fillion for the role.

Terrible

I was happy to hear when Russel was off this movie and dismayed to hear he was back on. This just confirms my feelings were justified.

I like Mark Wahlberg but he is wrong for this part.

And exactly 0% of this movie should take place in New York.

While it's obvious and good that Nathan Fillion won't get the part (damn it, who the fuck wants a bad tv actor like that?! seriously)... mark wahlberg obviously would be a bad choice too... but even worse.. de niro as sully.. doesn't fit at all. jesus.
Just take the actors already voicing the actors of the game, jesus.

I have been waiting for a Uncharted movie since playing the original in 2007, but the idea of changing the story to something with antiquities dealers in New York just kind of frustrates me. The story for the game was already better 95% of the shit they come up with in Hollywood these days so just leave it be. Oh and also we dont need Mark Wahlberg destroying another game character on the big screen.

Sounds like a tooty-fruity storyline to me. Stay with the game storylines, they worked, very well. And am I the only one still pulling for James Roday to play Drake?

I don't know what all the sick fury is about, but I'm willing to let this happen. In my opinion, we need more "raiders" like movies in a time of hollywood going staler then cheerios.

Also I'm not at all attached to the character of Nathan Drake or the stories of uncharted to refuse this creation. Let's just hope its done right.

While I certainly have no problem with them coming up with an original adventure for Nathan Drake to tackle in the film, not having Fillion do it feels wrong. He's quintessentially perfect.

One thing about Mark Wahlberg, this is a guy who badmouthed his own movie Max Payne during the press tour because he found out after making it that it was based on a video game. Mark, if you're prejudiced against video game adaptations then please stay away from this one.

Filmmakers should take a lesson from video games. For the better part of this decade, games have blown films out of the water with story, character development, etc. It's almost like movies are for the idiot masses anymore - made for commercial purposes by untalented people, and games are for the real people who can appreciate a good plot - made painstaikingly by artists and experts in their field. You can't survive in the market if you make crap in the gaming industry. Look at the games of the last few years: Bioshock, Uncharted, Modern Warfare 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Halo: Reach, Dead Space, Metal Gear Solid 4, Assassin's Creed 2. Those are just a few, and all amazingly crafted and people STILL can't stop talking about how great they were. Now look at the movies: Spider-Man 3, Iron Man 2, The Last Airbender, A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The biggest movies of the year, and 99% are crap, with the occational The Dark Knight. Even Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is better than the last 3 Star Wars films. When you get your hopes up for a soon-to-be-released game, chances are youll be getting your money's worth. Can't say that about films anymore, and it's depressing.

oh man.. haven't read such a stupid and hilarious posts for a while.. games blow films out of the water with story, character etc... AHAHAHAHA. games are still so fucking bad it's not even funny. There is ONE game so far (Heavy Rain) which comes close to a good movie. Uncharted 2 is the best made game so far and as great as a great action movie, but other than that games are awful.
If you're being serious.. wow.. poor guy.

ugh.

my thought about this whole thing is that this movie shouldn't even have been greenlit. i've play both uncharted games and they represent what video games very well will do in the future, and thats give the viewer (or player) an awesome, well written cinematic experience.

the games are done too perfectly to try and make a movie that is just as good. hollywood is retarded. they are a bunch of special little people, walking around with fingers up their butts asking people to smell if it

but alas, not even a pesci and deniro reunion could sike me up for this..... and i'm italian. i'm out.

The only thing good about this is that Russell is no longer doing Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies.

The perfect combo for this would have been John Landis, Nathan Fillion, and a script loyal to the game.

I should state that I, for one, do not have a problem with an Uncharted movie being made. I just have a problem with David O. Russell making it, but that's just me.

When are filmmakers just going to learn that while many of us have played the games, you can take a great story that exists in a game and do a literal adaptation of it in a film, and bring millions of more people in?

Look, they do it with books on a weekly and daily basis, why not give the same respect to games?

I'll only get excited about this project when I see the material taken seriously. And it could be, but the reports about it seem to indicate otherwise.
