Sony announces sequel to Denzel Washington's The Equalizer

04.23.2015

The Equalizer Antoine Fuqua Denzel Washington

It took a bit longer than many expected, but yesterday at CinemaCon, Sony announced THE EQUALIZER 2 by revealing the planned film's logo. The studio didn't share any details (cast, release date, etc.), but Denzel Washington is expected to reprise his role as former black ops commando Robert McCall.

Director Antoine Fuqua's adaptation of the CBS crime series of the same name opened to $34 million in September, and went on to gross over $190 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. After a very successful test screening, Sony hired Richard Wenk (who also wrote the first movie) in February of last year to pen the sequel.

No word on if Antoine Fuqua will helm the sequel, but he is teaming up again with his THE EQUALIZER actor; Denzel Washington will star alongside Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke (and possibly Vincent D'Onofrio) in Fuqua's THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN remake.

I really enjoyed that film. It was like John Wick but with better action, acting and a more charismatic lead

Sounds good to me. Denzel is always one of the more convincing badasses out there. "I don't have a lot of time. Which means you don't have any." Love that line from this movie.

Cool since The Equalizer was not only a bad ass action film, but it was very well made. Finally a franchise for Denzel & I hope Antoine Fuqua does return also, really underrated director, all of his movies are good.

Nice!! Make it a franchise!

Loved this movie, cm ant wait for this, great news! If I'm not mistaken this will be Denzel's first sequel. You really can't go wrong with Denzel, he instantly improves anything he's attached to. The first one was by the numbers, but it gave you exactly what you wanted. I have no problem if they do the exact same thing for part two, I'll be there opening weekend!

I loved the first one, plot holes and all.

I was so surprised with the first movie. I thought it was just going to be bland and trite. It had an element to it that Expendables and other modern action films starring older gents usually miss. The main good guy wasn't invincible. Sure he had some cool moves, but he bleeds and gets injured. Same with John Wick. John Wick gets fucked up. It's good to see action movies with guys who bleed instead of making them all terminators.

I know what you're saying, but I like it when they're invincible sometimes, just total supremacy. Like Bruce Lee, a man amongst boys.

Still rather see him as Frank Castle in a Punisher reboot.

One of my 5 favorites movies from last year. The difficulty here, will be creating a villain that can match Martin Csokas performance.

That was such a great scene near the end, when he sat down in the restaurant with him. But the final face off was a little disappointing, I was expecting him to be a badass, he was kind of a little bitch lol. He was awesome up to that point though.

I've still got to get around to seeing this but is he as badass in this as he was in Man of Fire? I thought the trailer made it look like Man on Fire 2.

awesome news. Denzel better return otherwise what's the point? Its a shame Edward Woodward has passed away, because it would have been cool to see him as Denzel's mentor in the sequel.
