Sony going to Electric Church

Jeff Somers' sci-fi novel series (that's novel, not graphic novel) series is being optioned by Sony for a possible franchise. THE ELECTRIC CHURCH will be the first film released in the series, according to THR’s Heat Vision, so what’s it all about?

Somers has written three books, all set in a near future where Earth is run by a federation of nations and governed by a council. Cates is a bodyguard-assassin who, in “Church,” is forced by the governing police force to kill the founder of a church that converts people by transplanting their brains into pliant robotic bodies.

Yup, that sounds pretty damn awesome to me. Like EQUILIBRIUM meets SURROGATES with none of Bruce Willis’ hairpieces. Adapting duties have been handed over to Trevor Sands, who is familiar with the sci-fi novel genre as he’s also adapting HYPERION for Warner Bros. I’m fully on board just because this isn’t a remake or a toy-based, but I’m hoping this will make for a pretty badass feature. Can any fans out there testify that this should be cool?
