UPDATED: Is Sony preparing to create spin-off films from their Spider-Man franchise?

11.21.2013

UPDATE: Deadline has followed up the report of Amy Pascal's comments of expanding the Spider-Man universe with a quote from Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton, who says that there are scripts in the works and that they are working closely with Disney and Marvel on the venture. To what degree is anyone's guess. From Deadline:

“We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works” involving characters and villains in the series,  told analysts in a Q&A session wrapping up his operation’s first meeting with investors. But he didn’t offer details, except that Sony is “working closely with Marvel and Disney.”

Well, this isn't all that surprising.

After the massive box office success of their SPIDER-MAN franchise (both director Sam Raimi's trilogy and the current reboot) it was kind of inevitable that the studio would be looking to expand the brand. In an investor presentation today, Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal teased the studio's plans to make ample use of their stable of Spidey characters, saying:

“We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains."

Although Disney owns the rights to the character, Sony owns the film rights and they are keeping a firm grip. After recently announcing not one, but TWO more sequels to the upcoming THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, it's become readily apparent that the studio has big plans for the ol' webhead and his merry batch of supporting characters. Although Pascal didn't elaborate on which characters they'd be spinning off (or if they'd just be lumped in with the sequels), the longest-running candidate has been the villainous Venom. However, Spidey has a large cast of characters and back-up players that are ripe for exploration, including: Black Cat, Silver Sable, Paladin, Solo, Prowler, Cardiac, Carnage, and many, many more, including a laundry list of villains.

The problem is that most of these characters are mostly third tier and completely unknown to the public, so it would take some serious creative effort to make a solo film worthwhile. It's not impossible (IRON MAN is a success story in that department), but it's an uphill climb. Either way, it appears that Sony is ready to do battle with the likes of Marvel and Fox in terms of their invidivually licensed characters. Fox has X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST on the way and the recently announced sequel to THE WOLVERINE, so the big-screen battle for comic book movie dominance appears to be continuing.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 swings into theaters on May 2, 2014.

What do you think? Do Spider-Man's supporting characters merit spin-offs?

Extra Tidbit: I still want to see a Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt movie. It'll never happen, because no studio would have the balls to pull it off, but man, it would be something else.

Spiderman has probably been the most whored out character in the Marvel Universe:
Amazing Spider Man
SpectacularSpiderman
Web Of Spiderman
Spiderman
Spiderman 2099
Ultimate Spiderman (2 Versions)
New Avengers
Etc
Why anyone would think the money grubbing would stop with comic books and cartoons is beyond me.

Can't wait for Amazing Spidey 2:Electric Boogaloo. Either they are or aren't moving ahead with the Sinister Six angle seems to be the biggest issue.
I know, let's introduce Spider Kid, Frog-Man, The Spot and some other lesser-knowns to make it more interesting.

I just can't see this happening or at least being successful. I mean Venom could make for a decent solo flick. The only issue is that the Venom solo comics relied on history of the character to bridge the gap from being Spiderman's enemy to becoming an anti-hero and to now **SPOILER** a full-fledged hero. So far on film they have an unsuccessful character on screen and as of now, no plans for introducing that character in the new franchise. So bringing that character into a solo film seems

There have been hints of having Black Cat in this franchise, which could work! If they have her as a very limited tertiary character in the film and then branch her off into her own movie that could work.

Besides that, there's really nothing else to work with there for a solo franchise that doesn't rely on Spiderman being in the film. The only other option I can think of is a movie based solely around the Daily Bugle with J. Jonah Jameson front and centre (JK Simmons to star). But that would really be more of a comedy than anything else.

ok heres the deal....

Heres the real deal....if Sony can work something out with Disney and Disney with Sony then they could have a contract to allow each others characters in their films.....it would generate enough money for both of them....problem is that Spiderman is bigger than any one marvel character...for sony to give rights to allow Spiderman to even cameo or possibly even bigger part in an Avengers film then Disney would have to let Sony use something to the entire degree of the full Avengers or something

Sony's big problem is that for the character of Spiderman to grow in this day and age he needs his Marvel brethrens help.....he needs the Magic of Marvel....plain and simple!!! or else you can expect to see spidermans numbers drop lower and lower and waaaaay lower with each sequel....i mean, who cares that they have black cat or Kingpin for that matter..... now Kraven would be an excellent villain....along with the Lizard as his pet thing or whatever, just like Mcfarlanes story from Spiderman titled comic!! I digress though, it doesn't matter, yes spiderman is my favorite marvel character as well but he will not survive when their is an entire Marvel Universe just behind him if he turns around....but he never does and it will be such a let down that his $ numbers will plummet....heavily!! Sony should know this, they are usually a little more savvy than your Warner Bros. studio execs....who can't seem to get their head out of their asses and listen to say...idk Paul Dini or Bruce Timm to create their DC Universe movies....all of them!!! DUHHHHHH, how dumb can you be?
So I hope Sony does something to remedy this and do it quickly.....cuz spiderman will die....for real!

I agree with what you're saying. I think if they're attempting to expand their use of Spiderman then they need to broker a deal with Disney/Marvel to use more of the Marvel universe with Spiderman. One such idea could be Marvel gets creative control to use Spiderman in Avengers movies. But Sony handles all creative control in Spiderman solo movies.

Marvel's writers can write Spiderman into a script based on what happens in the solo movies. Sony can use Avengers movies as a jumping off

Marvel's writers can write Spiderman into a script based on what happens in the solo movies. Sony can use Avengers movies as a jumping off point for Spidey's next adventure. One such idea would be for Spiderman to show up in Avengers during the third act to help in the take down of their villain. In the next solo Spiderman movie, a plot point Spidey needs to deal with is having SHIELD following him around and interfering with how he conducts himself - something that does happen in the comics. It keeps things simple and no ones toes get stepped on in writing their own stories.

I agree that they should be able to work out some kind of deal. But they will never agree on money and that is what will keep any kind of crossover from ever happening.

Its more of a money making issue...no doubt there is a long list of good characters to make movies from, but Marvel/Disney shouldnt dig down to third-tier characters because if the general public and comic books fans dont really know the character...whats the point? I know with Disney's backing that more movies are possible and thats good, but good in the right way...they need to first establish the 1st tier, and then 2nd tier , and wait on dealing with possible 3-tier characters.

Who do you even consider 2nd tier?

I would have thought Ant-Man to be a nobody comic book character. But since Marvel announced they want to move forward with making the movie, there have been so many people saying how much they love Ant-Man. I would say the same thing about Black Panther. In the comics, he's rarely front and centre for stories, but at the first mention of making a movie about him, everyone has an opinion and he's a fan favourite.

I think ppl over-emphasize the "iron-man is a third tier character." He probably wasn't in the top ten, but I'd say he's in the top 20 of popular and well know characters of all time. And with as many characters there are, that's hardly second string.

Whats the point?

Honestly whats the point of all this? Don't get me wrong Spider-man has some of the most interesting villains and side characters next to Batman of course, but I don't see ANY of them carrying a solo movie. Venom maybe...MAYBE.....if done right that is. I just don't see there being much demand for spin offs from Spiderman. Now X-men is a whole different story and one that is ripe for spin-offs. With all that said I would still love to see Spidey show up in an Avengers film. Seeing New York

A spin-off film in which all of the numerous versions of Stan Lee meet to have dinner would be fun. Although they'd have to get permission from Marvel Studios to get a hold of "Hulk Soda Stan Lee", "Hugh Hefner Stan Lee", "Beauty Pageant Judge Stan Lee", "Larry King Stan Lee", "I Thought Cap would be Taller Stan Lee", "Mental Hospital Stan Lee" and "Pickup Truck Driver Stan Lee".

Society has confused what being a dick is and what being just polite to someone but ends up encouraging them that they can do any thing they want, instead of being honest and saying, you're not good at this, this isn't for you.

Marvel Studios have no doubt made everyone up their games and that's a good thing. I like the direction Sony are heading with these movies. I love what Fox are doing too. Admittedly, itís another question as to whether or not they'll pull it off, particularly as I wasn't impressed with Amazing Spider-Man and had it been a Marvel Studios product, it would definitely have been the worst of the movies. Then again, had it been a Marvel Studios product, there's every chance I would not have been

Incidentally, and I'm now going in to nit picking territory, but I'm a little bothered by the fact that Electro has the time to not only come up with a symbol...but feels the need to apply it to his suit. I love comics...I love comic book movies...and am happy to let lots of things goÖbut as I said, Iím nit picking and not every character needs to have a logo on their suit in the live action incarnations. :o)

First movie: Spidey wrestles with the symbiote.

Second movie: Spidey battles Venom.

Third movie: Spidey and Venom must team up to stop Carnage.

Venom could get his own trilogy

Venom, depending on who they get to play him, could be his own money maker simply due to his resemblance to Spider-Man.
