Sony projects a worldwide gross of $1 billion for The Amazing Spider-man 2

04.17.2014

You may have thought that Sony had high expectations for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 based on the multiple already announced sequels and spin-offs they have planned, but just wait until you hear this. Sony Pictures' Amy Pascal made the ambitious statement that the studio is not just anticipating that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is going to be huge, but they are expecting it to be almost as big as THE AVENGERS. That's right; Sony has set a box office goal for their superhero sequel of $1 billion in worldwide gross.

Disney's THE AVENGERS broke records and became the third highest grossing movie domestically and only the third movie to cross the $600 million mark. Globally, THE AVENGERS grossed $1.5 billion and is one of only 18 films to ever break the $1 billion mark. Also consider this: none of the three Sam Raimi SPIDER-MAN films crossed $400 million domestically except the first movie and SPIDER-MAN 3 was the top grossing globally with $890 million. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN grossed just $262 million domestically and $750 million globally, making it the lowest grossing of any SPIDER-MAN films.

The $1 billion mark is definitely a high number especially with some reviews coming in negatively regarding the sequel. Director Marc Webb seems to have eliminated the DARK KNIGHT-esque "realistic" approach the first movie went for in favor of a balls out CGI extravaganza. Some have criticized the overstuffed cast of villains and the cartoony look of the trailers but Sony does not seem worried. I am still interested in checking out the movie but I would have reservations of setting such lofty goals in regards to past performance from the franchise under Webb and even Sam Raimi.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters May 2, 2014.

hahaha you guys are all so dumb... 1 billiion worldwide estimate is actually pretty tame

1B would be about a +33% bump

Thor's mediocre sequel just grabbed +42%

and Captain America has only been out for a little while and is already over +37%

very dumb Alex Maidy and comments!!!

You are all forgetting 1 thing..

The average movie viewer does not give a shit! I 'm hearing comments ranging from bad reviews to multiple viewings needed etc. Yada Yada Yada. I thought PIRATES O F THE CARRIBEAN 4 was a piece of shit (seen it on DVD), and it was, but that did not stop it from reaching
the 1 billion mark. The HOBBIT 1 is another example of a mediocre film crossing the billion mark. I personaly hope it does'nt, because I love SPIDER MAN and I don't like the way they are treating him, but I'm also full of shit,

Well, I thinks THE HOBBIT wasn't that bad, and the LotR loyalists made the difference.
BUT, I do agree with you about PitC 4, this example could prove me wrong, indeed.

I don't think so!!!

$1B needs multiple viewing, and I don't see people paying multiple time to be disappointed again... There is statisticly not enough masochists over the world for that !
Don't get me wrong, the movie ain't bad (its even a bit better than the first one), it's just average... And NOT $1B average !

Negative reviews? I've seen mostly pretty positive ones, even from some pretty snooty british papers. Also, the chinese market is getting bigger very fast. Yet its strange they would name such a high number, cause it they dont reach it it will be seen as a failure...

i guess i can see the logic...

if boringly horrible Amazing Spider-Man 1 can still make $750 million, this should hit the billion.

I can see it now.

Top Sony exec: "Spider-Man 2 will make us a billion dollars! Do you agree?"
Typical yes-man: "Uh, sure! Sounds great!"
Top Sony exec: "Great, I'll go tell the shareholders..."
Later...
Top Sony exec: "Looks like your projections were wrong, Typical yes-man. You're fired."

I'm glad to see the people involved in the film are confident in the film, but they should hope for Winter Soldier numbers at this point. That would be more realistic then The Avengers.

And like someone said below, if this new Spidey was involved in the Marvel Universe then it would be a different story.

Possible but not certain

Sam Raimi's Spiderman movies made lesser and lesser money domestically but increased international with every movie. ASM wasn't as successful as any of the original trilogy because of the Superhero overload in that year. Sandwiched between The Avengers ($1.5B) and TDKR ($1.1B) definitely made it loose $50-100M in the worldwide box office. Besides, the re-telling of the origin and not so interesting villain didn't help its cause either.
ASM2 will not have such scheduling problems Spider man is

I'm just not excited for these new "Spider Man" movies

Maybe because I still feel like the original movies JUST came out, and these 2 new ones very much look & feel the same as the original 3. At least when we compare the Batman movies Burton made vs. the Nolan movies, they are VERY different from each other. All the Spider Man movies look & feel exactly the same. And at the very least, I anticipate Superman vs. Batman to be quite different from all the other movies before it.

Don't get me wrong: I know exactly why Sony keeps making them

Don't get me wrong: I know exactly why Sony keeps making them (holding onto the rights & making some straight cash, homey). But these new Spider Man flicks just feel so much like a cash grab, "setting up a franchise" vs. the other superhero flicks out there. I'm not saying Marvel isn't setting up franchises either, but at least everything they're making is new & fresh. Of course, if they remake Iron Man in 10 years, it'll be the same problem.

OK, I'm done ranting

Maybe...

...if Marel owned exclusive rights again and it was woven into the already intricate storyline that's happening in that universe right now. Otherwise...uh, no.

Wishful thinking?

None of Raimi's Spidey films were able to hit that milestone, and they were significantly more popular.

[link] (takes a deep breath) [link] Way to shoot for the moon there, Sony. This is almost like when that rumor was going around that John M. Chu apparently said that G.I. Joe Reatliation would outgross The Avengers. You're setting your expectations WAY too high.

Have to say that this is possibly the weakest Spider-Man movie out of all of the recent entries, and that includes Spider-Man 3. Story is just all over the place and there are just too many villains to allow for proper character development making them cardboard cut outs!

Yep, saw it yesterday! By the way if you've seen any of the trailers you've seen most of the movie. Marc Webb has left few surprises in any of the set pieces between electro and spidey, shame really!

Really! I'm no loyalist!! But all of the tracking shots of Spider-man battling through the power plant and fighting Electro in Times Square are identical to the trailers. There is very little that is a surprise or unique. So the green goblin is a well developed character then is he? I loved the first movie but this was a major let down. No wonder it's been released in April cos it obviously wasn't going to cut it up against Godzilla and GOTG.

Andrew Garfield is good as Spidey
Emma Stone

Yeah and he was a cartoon character as was the rhino! If your talking about the Spoiler scene then I thought that this was handled really well and sensitively in the film. I actually saw the movie on Wednesday when it came out in the UK. Let's play the ball not the man here! Raimi's films have dated badly but this was a muddled mess of a film.

yeah, what?

that seems like a wildly high number. I mean who knows but that doesn't seem realistic at all. I think it'll do well, better than the original, but I still doubt it'll top the highest Raimi film even, nevermind top a billion.
