Sony remaking cult '90s horror movie The Craft; Leigh Janiak set to direct

The Craft Leigh Janiak

Sony has announced a remake of the THE CRAFT is in the works, and Leigh Janiak has been tapped to helm the project. Janiak (who directed the 2014 horror film HONEYMOON and will be behind the camera for an episode of MTV's upcoming Scream series) will also co-write the script with Phil Graziadei. Original THE CRAFT producer Doug Wick will produce the remake with Lucy Fisher. According to THR, Janiak "impressed execs with her take on a female empowerment tale."

The 1996 witchcraft-themed movie starred Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True as a group of teenager girls who use spells and curses to improve their lives and take revenge on those who have slighted them. The movie grossed over $55 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million, and inspired countless girls to visit their local Hot Topic store.

I don't remember THE CRAFT being a great movie (it's been a very long time since I've seen it), but I thought it was decent at the time, and who doesn't like hot witches? Which actresses would you like to see star in the remake?

Another pointless remake. Do something new.

Honestly, I'm used to and all for remakes in this day and age, but I feel for every one remake there should be 5 big budget original ideas.

At the time, it seemed like witches would be the next big thing (another example was that Sandra Bullock Nicole Kidman movie I never saw). It was highlighted with the success of CHARMED. However, it never really went anywhere. Witches are becoming popular again because of their inclusion in the VAMPIRE DIARIES/ORIGINALS universe... or are they? The producers of that show tried to give them a chance with THE SECRET CIRCLE, which only lasted one season.

I'll even call some casting here. Taissa Farmiga will play the main girl.

I bet they switch things up a bit here. I'm calling instead of the black girl getting picked on for being black, the third white girl will get picked on for being a lesbian or something and the black girl will be the one with the scars.

Why??

Just seems dumb. We know the story. And chances are they are going to change some of the plot. Why not just make it its own original movie about witches? Give it its own name. Why does everything have to be remade? It's ok for movies to be similar. That would be like every movie about vampires calling itself a remake of Dracula. Or every possession movie being called a remake of Exorcist. Just a lazy way to cash in.

Honeymoon was surprisingly a tight suspense thriller so I have faith in this director.
