Sound familiar? Memento is getting a remake

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

I know we're all a little perturbed by 2002's CABIN FEVER getting a remake so soon, but AMBI Pictures has just upped the ante. They've announced their intentions to give the American public deja vu and remake the Christopher Nolan classic MEMENTO. This announcement comes as part of a deal with Exclusive Media Group, during which they acquired over 400 titles, including DONNIE DARKO, END OF WATCH, and the Gwyneth Paltrow butterly effect drama SLIDING DOORS.

Here's the plot of the original MEMENTO, in case you've forgotten:

Leonard is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife's killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.

What AMBI doesn't seem to realize is that, when people rewatch MEMENTO to glean details from its reverse storytelling pattern, that doesn't mean they need an entirely new movie to do the work for them. 14 years is hardly enough time for the Guy Pearce-led flick to fade from the public memory. Sure, some preteens will adore the hell out of it, but is it worth pushing the remake bar so far back?

That said, I wait with bated breath for my SLIDING DOORS reboot.
