Spawn creator teases R-rated movie that goes further than Logan & Deadpool

03.06.2017

Now that LOGAN is a bona fide moneymaker, and the DEADPOOL 2 teaser has everyone all hot and bothered like teens at the beach, we can probably expect to see more R-rated superheroes coming onto the screen. This is the time to shine for characters with more adult backgrounds to come into the light, and that includes Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. The comic legend has been working for years to get a new movie made, and now may be the time.

In fact, while speaking at Emerald City Comic Con McFarlane got the crowd riled up by mentioning he plans for the movie to be a hard R, citing it will go even more extreme than DEADPOOL and LOGAN:

Listen, I’m going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R…If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s Logan, we’re going to be here. It’s going to be dark. It’s going to be nasty.

Given the craving from audiences for more adult-geared comic book movies, the possibility of McFarlane actually getting to make his movie has never been greater. The character has a firm fan base that desperately wants a proper adaptation, and now is the time when studios may want to explore bolder options in the superhero movie world. We all love Spider-Man, but chances are small he's gonna disembowel someone anytime soon.

McFarlane’s passion is intoxicating, but I think this movie will only get made with some A-list talent somewhere in the mix. Whether it be the star, the director or whoever, there has to be someone involved who audiences somewhat know, and will help generate interest. We may not have a DEADPOOL movie if not for Reynolds in the lead, and the same may prove true if a known actor doesn’t take Spawn. But I hope we get a proper movie around Spawn, just so I can see how “nasty” it can get. Does he just mean he’s bringing back John Leguizamo?

Well, if he can't make it now, at least we'll know for certain it will never become a reality.

20 years later and still no progress, this movie is a dream

There is no Spawn movie. They have been talking about one for 20 years now and each time there is just minor details about what the creator WANTS to see and not what is actually being planned. He wants a movie to follow the two cops and have Spawn as a mythological thing that kills from the dark. He wants a movie where Spawn fucks everyone's shit up and is awesome. He wants a movie where the script doesn't suck and the studios greenlight his project. All wants, no actual evidence of the project

It's been almost 20 years since Todd McFarlane talks about Spawn sequel and he always says he got a good script, although this time he says it will R rated. I haven't read Spawn comic in ages so I don't know what storyline he can use. Probably be a reboot.

Pretty much take the HBO animated series and film it. Too bad Donald Sutherland is so old he would have been perfect for Twitch.

Open the R-rated gates, here they come!!
Spawn is a movie that obviously requires an R rating, and this is one movie I would be glad to see revamped. It was such an oddly good movie when it was released, im game.

Ha!

Typical McFarlane, His idea's aren't good enough to get made so he has to wait for others to be successful and ape their shit. I love the guys work on the Spider Man comics in the early 90's, the guy wrote/penciled/inked the first 12 or so issues of Spider Man after leaving Amazing all himself, but aside from that so much of what he's done is just a poor man's rip off of better ideas.

Every time a new great comic book movie comes out, we hear this. I mean give it a rest.

I don't mind R rated movies - and there's no question a Spawn film should be rated R - but it becomes a problem when the rating turns the film into a pissing contest. Don't tell me your film will be "more R" than Logan or Deadpool, tell me it will be as good!

I've wanted to see a Spawn film that lived up to the heights of the animated series for a long time now. Todd has been teasing this film forever so I can't take anything he says seriously, at one point Jamie Fox was rumored for Al Simmons. I hope the current climate of hard r superhero flicks is enough to get this greenlit, part of me thinks Dredd had a part in slowing this down.

I support a hard-R comic movie even just for variety's sake. Furthermore, comics do have a tradition of more extreme content--from the EC titles to certain independent gorefests today. This new Spawn adaptation could carry-on that tradition. Graphic tales are about spectacle, from the whimsical (e.g. Donald Duck) to the wondrous (e.g. Superman) to the wicked (e.g. Crossed).

Spawn was my very first comic book as a very young lad and has remained one of my favorites ever. Now is the time to finally make the dream a reality. Go for it Todd!
