This morning you got the first pics of the new SPEED RACER movie, and now here comes the trailer, which debuted on Entertainment Tonight, well, tonight. What can I say about this? To quote my friend George after watching it “it definitely has its own look.” I couldn’t have put it better myself, George. I think the Wachowskis have outdone themselves on this one. Any other director(s) would have turned this into a generic big budget CG extravaganza (sadly, those have become generic) but the Wachowskis have gone out of their way to create something utterly unique, a singular vision you might say. There’ll be a lot of complaints that this thing looks too much like a video game, but at least there are real people in it. Have you seen BEOWULF? Now that looks like a videogame. I wouldn't call the cartoon a serious work of art. Any "bad american filmmaking" techniques won't stop this from making money with family audiences.



You people talking about this like it's a hacked up version a Kirosawa or Scorcese project need to lighten up a little.

The only "live-action anime" I've seen that has yet worked was Casshern. I'll probably see this on a slow weekend, but I'm already cringing.

I had no idea that people cared so much about Speed Racer. Always liked the cartoon but I think that I will wait for Showtime. Until then, have fun ripping on it you sour pusses.

I just don't know...
The Racer X costume looks terrible. I wish they hadn't took it so literally, and the only visuals that I liked was literally the end, with Matthew Fox cast in shadow... This film is obviously aimed at the children's market, but I don't think its going to work. That Racer X catching the punch shot is awful, needs a hell of a lot of work in reshoots!!

In a 2 minute trailer, you'd think they'd showcase some of the BETTER stuff of the production; you know, to get people to WANT to see it. But I have this wierd feeling that most of us on here arent digging the trailer.... hmmm.



But that's totally just ME. If you dig the trailer and that "style" (?) of filmmaking, then more power to ya.



And in defense of that (admittedly) poorly-written and very misunderstood "american audiences" mention, im guessing that that poster was talking about HOLLYWOOD films in general (which i can agree with). Hollywood films are made primarily for money (there are some exceptions though) and although i dont know where the whole "brainwashing" thing came from, i think it was just a figure of speech.

I never liked the cartoon but I gave the trailer a chance. This movie is going to be either a love or hate. I don't think there will be any in between. As I watched the trailer another cult movie came to mind, Aeon Flux. Both have their following but neither was or will be a big hit. Why not take out animation and just make it an action flick? It will never have the feel of the cartoon so...

Speed Racer was never a favorite cartoon of mine, and I wasn't excited to hear this movie was being made. Now after seeing the trailer I feel the same way. I really don't even get why someone would bother with a live action version. Looks like the target audience is about 6 to 12 years old anyway, so maybe the youngins will like it.

Again, I love the fact that the trailer has energy and hell, the cheesey lines and insane techno music don't bother me. I am a fan of the original so this does seem to get the feeling right, but having watched the trailer again, I failed to see any tongue in cheekness and am still very distracted by how poorly the live actors are intergrated with the CGI everything else. I do hope that's just...

This trailer is freaking TERRIBLE! They've completely lost any plot they may have had after the second Matrix (yes, I liked Reloaded). This movie looks like a joke. And this comes from a huge fan of the cartoon who used to watch it every Saturday. Boooooooo.

what the hell is with Trixy? Looks kinda off doesnt she? Secondly, poor chim chim (monkey) is it any wonder he lashed out on set and got punched in the head? I know the Wachowskis are going 4 realism but thats the time they should used CG as opposed to making the movie look like dr. seuss bizarro nascar racing.

...all I can say is, it doesn't look great. To each his own of course but it seems unlikely this will be a smash hit in any sense. We'll see soon enough I suppose.

I havent watched a single episode of speed racer, and IM even offended. Offended that they can display such crap as an IMPROVEMENT on the original. Isnt that what adaptation is all about, bring a work to a new medium in hopes of IMPROVING it? What a waste.

I really like the feel of the trailer, I felt the colours and everything was very cool and trippy; the [link] is very original and cool.

However, I will not see this movie in theaters. For one, even though it might be tongue-in-cheek, the dialogue and acting looks just like Dick Tracy (over-the-top and stupid). For two,...

However, I will not see this movie in theaters. For one, even though it might be tongue-in-cheek, the dialogue and acting looks just like Dick Tracy (over-the-top and stupid). For two, it's the Wachowsky brothers, I mean, the Wachowsky siblings. Their movies have really bad dialogue and are mostly stupid (yes the Matrix is a pretty good movie, but it's not as amazing as it's made to be). I feel that they're basically in the same league as George Lucas, but that's just my opinion.

In the end, it's made for the kids (I think) and I'm sure they'll enjoy it, but I don't know why this should be considered a blockbuster anyways.

My Dad introduced me to SpeedRacer when I was little. It was his favorite cartoon as kid, and we would watch it together. It was really great. This, to me, captures the cartoon pefectly. It looks great imo. Was everyone expecting a dark, violent film based off SpeedRacer?

The trailer certainly looks unique. Although I tend to worry that one half of the Wachowskis is a bit too flamboyant and tends to lean towards making things look a bit like "Batman & Robin" at times. Not a big fan of that sort of style.

yup, this fulfilled the promise of those lame stills. even on a pop-art production level the lighting in this looks crap, and overall bot stylized enough. the CG car racing doesn't interest me at all, nor does the techno music mixed with heavy handed family values / bad corporation plot. let the excuses begin... "its based on a cartoon, what did you expect?", "it's for kids!", "its..."... take...

Yes, Beowulf looked like a videogame, something I am entirely OK with because videogames do not have real people, so why is that a problem for it to look that why? With that, this film looks like it has enegry galore and will be interesting, if my eyes don't explode from the odd fitting CGI/ live action mix. Yes, Beowulf looked like a videogame, something I am entirely OK with because videogames do not have real people, so why is that a problem for it to look that why? With that, this film looks like it has enegry galore and will be interesting, if my eyes don't explode from the odd fitting CGI/ live action mix. I do pray this is good, because V For Vendetta and the last two Matrix sequels made me want to kill myself. (Yeah, that's right, fuck V for Vendetta)

sorry friends and neighbours, i gotta go against the grain here, i think it has an awesome look to it, and should be quite a thrill ride. its based on anime, and keeping that look with real people is cool. remember, these guys did "bound", they know a thing or two about film. didnt everyone steal their matrix "bullet time" look? they are innovators, guaran effin teed the blur motion lok gets...

Dude, having real people in this film doesn't make it look any less like the Wachowskis are fumbling this project big time.



Beowulf was a decent flick, sorry if you can't get over the CG actors...

I'm not gonna go apeshit about the trailer, but it is engaging and i really don't see why so many people get horrified by the looks of it.

This just basically is a live anime.

Sure the dialogue is a little cheesy but I really think going for something differant is a good thing here.



Sure it may suck balls in the end but I'm willing to give it a try.



Btw, I was pissed that they interupeted one of my favorite tv theme songs with that techno crap.
