Spider-Man 2 official

Well, it's official: SPIDER-MAN 2 is a go.  Sam Raimi confirmed his involvement at a press conference in Australia this week and today Variety reports that Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have signed on in an official capacity as well.  There really should've been no doubt in your mind that this was going to happen but it's good to hear that things are sealed up in a nice, little package.  SPIDER-MAN's production team, including this year's Oscar producer Laura Ziskin, will also return for another go at the webhead.   All parties were reportedly eager to return and there were no behind-the-scenes battles for money or power a la X-MEN 2 or MEN IN BLACK 2.  Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of TV's "Smallville" and the writers of SHOWTIME, will write the script for SPIDER-MAN 2 although I'm sure you can expect their draft to go through a series of rewrites.

Still no word on a possible plot for the second film but you'll see a Spidey more comfortable with his new found powers and battling new villains.  Speaking of villains, let the speculation begin on who they will be.  Dr. Octopus maybe?  He was, if you remember, originally in the first film but was cut during the script rewriting stage.  Venom?  Rhino?  The Scorpion?  All possibilities, though some stronger than others.  Filming is scheduled to begin on the sequel in January for a 2004 release.  I was just going to tell you when SPIDER-MAN hits theaters but if you don't know by now...
