Spider-Man spin-off movies Venom and The Sinister Six officially announced by Sony

Dec. 13, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Looks like the rumors were true. Sony has announced plans for spin-off films from their Spider-Man franchise, and they will be VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX. Sony has hired writers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard for the spin-offs. They'll be working with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, and director Marc Webb as a “franchise brain to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films," says Sony. Kurtzman, Orci and Solomon will write VENOM (with Kurtzman directing), and Goddard will write THE SINISTER SIX, as well as possibly direct.

Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad on expanding Spider-Man's cinematic universe:

“The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi and Matt have begun to explore in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have the uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the Spider-Man universe in each of these upcoming films.”

With Disney pumping out Marvel films and Simon Kinberg creating a comic book movie universe for Fox, it was really only a matter of time until Sony officially announced their plans. Many assumed a VENOM film could be in the cards when the spin-offs were first rumored, however I don't think anyone thought about a film focusing on THE SINISTER SIX. Drew Goddard was recently hired to write and direct a Daredevil series for Netflix, and hopefully him now working with Sony as well doesn't affect that project.

So what do you think, Spidey fans? Excited for VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will be in theaters May 2nd, 2014, and the third and fourth films will be released on June 10, 2016 and May 4, 2018.

Just a sad Marvel Knockoff.....

all DC, and Sony are doing is trying to play the catch up game before the superhero fad lets up. In the end it come off as desperate.

I like the ideas

Venom should be a no brainer, but he needs to appear in AS3 first, then you have Carnage as the bad guy for his solo movie and maybe for AS4 or 5 (however long they go) you can do some version of maximum carnage. The sinister six however will be much harder to pull off, like I said I like the idea but how do you do this without Spiderman in it...

Venom needs to be the creepy monster in the dark that kills, the way Todd McFarlane created the character, not this conflicted hero shit he's gone through over the years.

Venom movie has been "in development" for about 5 years now. IMDB has had a page for it this whole time, with this news being updated to it today.

What about Morbius? I think that could much better as a real horror movie. Maybe have Blade in it too. Kraven would be another choice of mine. Have him Hunting The sinister six or something like that.

Wow a lot of hate for this. I'm not gonna pass judgement till I hear more. I would love a Venom movie, but only if it's done right. I don't wanna see the actors face all the time (like they did in Spider Man 3). I wanna see Venoms face, and that crazy tongue wagging.

Not Every Comic Property Needs to be a Movie

Venom doesn't need a movie. Carnage having his own movie is ridiculous. How do you even do a movie about the Sinister Six? Is it an origin story? That's terrible.

Just make good Spider-Man flicks and limit it to one or two villains per movie. Please.

I assume they'll be piting Venom against Carnage. You can't do Carnage justice in a PG-13 movie.

This does not look good for Spiderman. While I think the reboot was pointless, I did enjoy ASM and I am looking forward to ASM2. But I don't see how they can branch off to these two sets of characters.

Venom could work as he has been set up as an anti-hero in the comics on a few occasions. But to do that movie properly, you first need to introduce the characters in Spiderman. Which means Eddie Brock needs to be featured in a movie, Spiderman needs to adopt the black suit, get rid of it,

Which means Eddie Brock needs to be featured in a movie, Spiderman needs to adopt the black suit, get rid of it, and have Eddie Brock become Venom. They're already on track for a story arc into the ASM3, so unless ASM4 covers this story I don't think they could properly launch a Venom franchise.

As for Sinister Six, it might be doable. They could have the movie from a villain's perspective and make it a really high-budget and super charged heist flick or something. But that would really only be good for one movie. And without Spiderman as their foe, what's really the point? And it kind of detracts from Spiderman's movies if all of his villains are now turned into people we want to root for.

Sony isn't wrong for wanting ot extend the life of the Spiderman franchise. Any studio that owned a property like that would be crazyy not to do something to continuously put a movie on screen (ahem, WB, ahem). But Spiderman is not the franchise to branch out into multiple films. This is a franchise that should definitely take the James Bond route. Sign actors to a three picture deal, then recast with another actor for three more movies. Just continuously do this and you'll be able to extend the life of the franchise. Spiderman has such an extensive rogues gallery and supporting cast that there would be plenty of storylines to create for years to come.

I wont shit on the idea as of now, the film could turn out awesome who knows. An idea for the sinister six film I think could work would to be bring in Kraven the hunter who's out there trying to hunt the sinister six. That could possibly be great.

Orci and Kurtzman? AAARGH!

This just sounds desperate. Sony will just keep pimping out Spider-Man like an old, sad, toothless prostitute who has running eyeliner and smeared lipstick. I'm saddened that I have zero desire to see any more of one of my favorite superhero or his villains.

We already know that Goddard has experience and success with flipping genres on their heads after Cabin In The Woods, and Kurtzman is capable of a decent sci-fi plot with the Star Trek reboot under his belt, so at least they have decent talent behind this. I know it seems unlikely, but I wouldn't count Spidey out of the picture with these films. I wouldn't be surprised if they convinced Garfield to show up in a limited capacity to provide some opposition for both films. That way, the films can

That way, the films can give us something sort of new; villain-centric comic book adaptations with the hero playing the nemesis. That will definitely put fans in the seats. There's also a lot of talk about how Sony is milking the franchise to death with their greed, but let's be honest here. If you had the rights to this character, you wouldn't let him go either. Everyone acts like Marvel has this impeccable track record since they started their attempt at building an interconnected comic book universe. Apparently, no one has been willing to admit how shitty Iron Man 3 and Captain America The First Avenger were.

For me, Cap was one big boring cliche, complete with cringe-worthy dialogue and wooden characters and acting. The sequel looks quite a bit better.

These movies are already bad

The writers have to scare you...it scares me these guys still get hired to write movies! You have the duo of Alex Kurtzman and Rob Orci...these guys can't write. I mean they wrote all the Transformers movies...including Revenge of the Fallen possibly the biggest steaming pile to to be crapped out in the last decade. And lets not forget the "great" Cowboys and Aliens. The only time they "write" anything decent is when Abrams is involved...this is not the case here.

I don't blame them for Revenge of the Fallen. They only had half of a first draft when the writers strike happened and Paramount pushed ahead and made it anyway, keeping the original release date. But you're right - their best stuff is with Abrams.

Michael Bay penned most of the dialogue in Revenge of the Fallen himself because of the Writer's Strike jackieblue mentioned. The third film was written by Ehren Kruger. I actually think the duo aren't horrible writers; Cowboys and Aliens was another project that had seven to eight writers attached, including Damon Lindelof.

There's way too much going on with this franchise at one time. Just seems they're trying to expand this universe a little too quirky.

I guess I can understand a Venom film under the right pretense, but a Sinister Six film without Spider-Man? What's the point?

When even The Soloist thinks this is a bad idea then its a BAD IDEA! And I don't mean that as a knock to you, I actually admire your ability to remain optimistic about upcoming projects. I find myself becoming more and more cynical towards movies like this being announced and always find a way to hate them early on. However you seem to give anything a fair chance and I truly admire that. However projects like this remind me of why I'm so cynical!

A Venom movie... ok I guess, but it doesn't work unless they properly built up the character with Spider-man first. I hear the new Venom comics were good, but you can't jump right to that. As for Sinister Six... how does that work at all?

Venom spinoff? God they'll ruin it with like way too many heroes (See what I did there?). In all seriousness, Venom MIIIIGHT work, and Sinister 6 has good talent, but who the fuck are they up against? If it's Spidey, then it's a Spidey movie. It sounds terrible, but like I said, at least their is a good writer who can prolly figure out a way to flip it on it's head.

There is no end in sight with the Spiderman Franchise. This is the only way Sony can keep the franchise so it doesnt go back to Marvel/Disney. It's sad, its desperate, its the movie buisness baby!

They are going to screw up Venom again.

Plain and simple, Venom is going to be played by an emo loser kid, like everyone else is portrayed in this series.

Ultimate Venom is supposed to be HUGE, the Eddie Brock Jr isn't big, but the suit is more alive than any other version. It is like The Blob (horror movie monster) with a face.

Dont know how i feel about this, im all for an other go at Venom but Kurtzman directing? would rather have a solid director on the job. Also a Siinister Six movie? Could be interesting having a film based on supervillians and i like Goddard but i smell someone melking this franchise.

Well, that's it. This will be a disaster. I was looking forward to ASM2 because I assumed Sony was building a series of films about SPIDER-MAN. The Sinister Six can't work as it's own movie without Spider-Man - Venom could, but only if he's introduced properly in a Spider-Man movie, which he probably won't be. They need to focus on Peter Parker and give him a lengthy, well thought out franchise. Unfortunately Spider-Man movies are in the hands of Avi Arad, who I'm convinced after all these

Venom by itself without any other super hero mentions could actually be good under the right circumstances. The plot would be similar to fallen and predator 2 in that it jumps from one person to the next. Each time it commits extremely horrific murders with each possessed person eventually becoming one of its victims. While all this is happening a detective attempts to unravel the mystery of the murders only to discover the shocking truth of what is really going on.

I don't know, on the one hand, I love what Marvel Studios has done...but there dominance is so great...it's making others push the turbo boost button to try and catch up...cutting all the corners Marvel didn't. Fox's X world seems to be the exception given that they established their universe even before Marvel Studios gave us Iron Man...so what Singer is doing...doesn't feel rushed.

Villains!

I love the idea of a big budget comic book film that follows the path of the villain. Great way to add something to the genre. As we hear quite often from actors/actresses, villains are always the more interesting and complex character to play. Hopefully we get to see some of that complexity make it to the screen!
