Spider-man writers promise new film will not rehash the origin story

07.31.2015

SPIDER-MAN is going to take the same route as BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and give us a superhero who has already cemented his alter-ego, at least according to screenwriters Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The VACATION writer/directors recently sat down for Andy Greenwald's Podcast where they shared some details on their approach to scripting Jon Watts' new take on the webslinger.

With Tom Holland in the role, Goldstein said fans don't need to see a third rehash of how Peter Parker becomes Spider-man.

"I think that everybody feels like, you know he got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died. We probably don’t need to revisit that."

The probably in there may mean it could still make it's way on screen, but I somehow doubt that. With CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR set to debut Tom Holland as the character, it would seem odd to make his solo debut a flashback to his origins. Daley himself seems to think there is more than enough material to avoid having to go back and instead focus on his high school years which have not been focal in either Sam Raimi or Marc Webb's takes on the character.

"We want to explore the fact that just because you get super powers, [it] doesn't make you into a really sophisticated, successful adult," he said. "He's still a kid, and he's clumsy and he's a geek and he's a bit of an outcast and, in many ways, the super powers amplify that and exacerbate his tying to fit in."

Those disliking the new VACATION film may now be worried about Goldstein and Daley writing SPIDER-MAN, but it sounds like they are definitely taking an approach that will set the new film apart from it's predecessors. The various animated series have kept Peter Parker in high school and have been able to deliver quality stories that balance his immaturity with his super powers. Here's hoping that can translate to the big screen.

SPIDER-MAN hits theaters on July 26, 2017, but first debuts in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR on May 6, 2016.

I still don't get how Spider-man can both be young, and still established. Was he bit when he was 12? Did he fight any super villains, or just small-time criminals? Was he around during the events of Avengers and Daredevil, which is also in NY? Anyway, I don't think the general public is too interested in another recast spider-man so soon, which is part of the reason Amazing Spider-man made less than Raimi's films. This will probably be the lowest grossing spider-man film.

Tim Burton only told Batman's origin in flashback and that was enough. One line of dialog where Peter feels responsible for Ben's death and you can move on to the rest of your movie after that.

I just don't understand why they keep making Peter younger and younger.

TAS failed because nobody who watched the movies wanted to see Spidey in high school. High school scenes are just lame fodder for Sony movies to act as a way to show "character development" the same way in each of their films. It is a crutch. Get Spidey out of school. Make him into the man we know. Now that they casted some 14 year old kid, we wont get anything but High School Spidey for the next 3 movies.

Well duh.....

Exactly why is that supposed to be a surprise? He's appearing first in Civil War (which has him already as Spider Man), so who figured they were going to go back in time afterward to tell a 3rd origin story in the last 15 years?

If they get the essence of what made the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series so fantastic they'll have done their job - whilst cocky as Spider-Man when taking on powerful villains he's very awkward in the presence of established A list heroes. I can't wait to see how he interacts with Iron Man and Captain America...and if Fury actually implies he knows who Spider-Man is (rather than come out and say it)...should they meet...I'll have a massive smile across my face.

YES! You don't need that origin. I think everybody knows how Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man and they should just go from there.

Thank goodness...

The one thing I hoped that we were spared from in this 2nd reboot was the origin story...AGAIN. Bit by a spider, dead uncle... we know. I don't think Marvel's involvement is going to bring a whole bunch of new people into the theater to watch, so very few people are going to be wondering how he got that way. Hopefully they do find a way to strike the balance between Parker and Spidey.

Marvel established this already…

…that there is already a spider-man running around(well… a kid that can climb walls anyway) In ANTMAN.

I just hope these guys can find the right balance of what makes Peter Parker/Spider-Man so relatable (something that was missing heavily in the rebooted franchise) and have that carry over well throughout the film. I just haven't been really impressed by any of the films these two guys have done.

I wonder if they will just do something similar to what "The Incredible Hulk" did in the opening credits.

That's already close to what Spider-man 2 did in the opening credits to recap the first film.
