Spidey 4 writer!

I believe this is the first official bit of SPIDER-MAN 4 news, and it is my honour and privilege to bring it to you. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that James Vanderbilt, the man who wrote ZODIAC (one of the best films of the year) has signed on to pen the fourth installment of the Peter Parker saga.

Despite the impending writer's strike, Sony has gone on and commissioned Vanderbilt for the gig, and even though he can't technically write during the strike, he can at least still brainstorm, right? We all know there's no word on any returning players, and at this point, I'm not even going to bother to speculate on that. It's called overkill.

But this is certainly good news for SPIDER-MAN, because even though part 3 had the potential to be the darkest of the series, we all know that wasn't the case. This franchise needs a grit injection, and based on Vanderbilt's previous film, he could be the man to do it. It's scheduled for a summer 2009 release.

Extra Tidbit: James Vanderbilt is not to be confused with James Van Der Beek, of Varsity Blues fame, although I'm sure if he were hired to write the 4th SPIDER-MAN film, he'd do a fine job.
