Spike Lee will officially be directing the remake of Oldboy

Jul. 11, 2011by:

It's been a long time since I visited a Spike Lee joint. The last film I saw that he directed was 2004s THE 25th HOUR with Edward Norton. I did have plans to see MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA with my Dad but he wanted to go see it so bad he just snuck off and saw it by himself. After seeing it, he calls me up saying something along the lines of "it was a f*cking disappointment". Needless to say, dad was not pleased.

My Father's thoughts on film aside, it looks like Lee will be helming the remake of OLDBOY. The original was directed by Park Chan-Wook and centered on, "a man who is kidnapped on his daughter's birthday and held for 15 years in solitary confinement without explanation. He is eventually released and sets out on a path to take revenge on those who destroyed his life." In 2004, the film won the Grand Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Basically, if you haven't seen it by now, you need to.

Early in the development of the remake, Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were involved while Dreamworks was still attached. Now Mandate Pictures have taken over with a screenplay by Mark Protosevich (I AM LEGEND) and Lee directing.

Check out the trailer below if you have not seen the original.

I like Spike's talent for dialog and setting, he always brings to life his characters and their environs in vivid, memorable fashion. But the actual number of cohesive, complete movies he's made are few and far between. St. Anna wasn't a good movie, but it had great scenes and characters (loved, LOVED the Axis Sally ambush.) And of course Inside Man was Spike knocking one out of the park. He's getting better, so I reserve judgment.

You only have to watch one film of Spikes to convince you he's the right man for the job, and that film is The 25th Hour. Shit's brilliant.

I love Spike Lee... there are much better ways he can make his return to the big screen. I guess I hope this will do well, so afterwards he can do something great again that's not a TV documentary about an athlete or New Orleans.

Spike Lee has his share of bad movies, but he's got a couple of great ones as well, and his great ones are great than most director's great ones, so Im confident, hoping this will one of the great ones.

P.S. Don't know if someone mentioned it, but 25th Hour was released in 2002, not 2004.

Better than Spielberg!

I think Lee could pull this off. His Clockers, 25th Hour and Inside Man were pretty sweet, and if he can even get darker... I think it could nail it, all things considered.

$50 says Denzel signs up to play the lead.

Actually, Denzel already had his OLDBOY moment in MAN ON FIRE. Great movie!

Let me preface by saying Oldboy is one of my favorite movies. And it is also demented as fuck. I'm not in favor of a remake. And when Spielberg wanted to do it, as much as I love the man, I thought he was arguably the least appropriate man for the job. Spike Lee is a director with edge, who has made a number of good, or at least interesting, movies. That he has a definite dark side that isn't out to please the masses is a strength here. I actually believe Spike can put his own spin to this

Sounds good...

I wish Lee the best. If he has a strong script, he should do pretty well.

He should cast Ken Leung, whom he worked with in 'Sucker Free City'...if not him, another Asian American actor with potential.

I can see it. Now if you get somebody who can do action scene right , I'm all set.

I honestly have no idea why directors like Lee or Fincher want to remake foreing films, especially ones that are barely a decade old. And I honestly don't see how anybody plans to make a lot of money with an Americanized Oldboy. And best it will be a forgettable watered down version of the original, otherwise it'll be too extreme for the mainstream audiences and surely lose money.

Why is Spike Lee involved in this? I love Spielberg but don't think he was a great choice either. This movie will not translate at all, especially since it has one hell of a dark ending that mainstream U.S. audiences are not ready for.

Don't Know

Haven't seen enough Lee films to make a good call on whether or not he's a good choice but as a fan of the original I'm not looking forward to this. I do fear that a whole bunch of the more 'controversial' elements will be cut out to make it more accessible to an American audience.

I would like to see...

an almost direct adaptation from the manga the original film was based off of. The two have drastically different story lines and the manga story I feel would be better suited for American audiences (people not privy to the Park film). Though I must admit I thought the film version was better than the comic.

Barry Pepper for the villain!

I love Oldboy. I think it's Park's best, but the Jesus Christ of movies it is not.

The American version is going to have to up the shock value and tell the story in a different way. Spike Lee is capable of this.

I LOVE OLDBOY! Not a fan of the vengeance trilogy tho, especially Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Anyways, no chance in hell Lee will even come close to capturing the magic that Oldboy did. Cats out of the bag, talking about the twist. I hope it's will at least be a hard R, but we know Hollywood won't allow that.

Eh, Lee is an interesting choice (not my first, but it's a wild card of sorts), since leaving it alone isn't an option. Could be worse, could be Uwe Boll....hahaha.....

2 things

BAD IDEA. However, two things have happened in the past few years :

When it was originally announced that Heath Ledger would be the Joker, a lot of people thought "oh shit" [link]. And then it turned out to be the best performance of the year. So benefit of the doubt is always welcome.

When Herzog decided to remake Bad Lieutenant, everyone was like WTF ?!!!, but it turned out to be pretty different from the original and a pretty decent film in its own right.

The final thought

The final thought that comes to mind is Let Me In, the remake of Let the Right One In. Was a useless remake, but not bad. I'd still be pretty disappointed if they re-made a shot-by-shot remake. But then, they probably won't, thanks to the MPAA...

Not all of Lee's films are about the African American experience.

You might want to do a bit of research before you spout idiotic comments.

Fucking stupid.

I'm having a Park Chan-Wook Oldboy party whenever this remake gets released. I hope this movie fails horribly and Blu-Ray/DvD sales of the original skyrockets. Fucking disappointing.

Yeah,... because the original was just "OK" and didn't quite make the "original story" thing....
FUCKING FAIL!
Let me guess, racism afoot?
Shelton (real name) is on such a roll these days...
SUCK, but the "community" will line up once he plugs in a black star and Leguizamo as the spunky sidekick.
(Insert new Public Enemy theme song for "edge")

like I said fuckin FAIL!!!

What is it with you posters (i.e. white males) thinking every single Spike Lee film is about African American oppression?

It's like saying every single Tarantino film is a blaxploitation rip-off with him having all his black characters use the 'n word' every five minutes.

but Oldboy isn't starring an oppressed black man

"I'll fix that! Get Ice Cube on the phone" $50 says that Wintergreen is an evil rich white man (but is there really any other kind?).

:D

I also like to imagine Spike Lee making everyone in his office call him "General Lee" and he wears Civil War era Confederate uniforms.

South Korean movies are by far my favorite, and always will be.

I just know that if this gets made, all of the other great ones will soon follow.

And the will butcher every. Fucking. One.

Just please stay the fuck away from Kim Ki-Duk movies.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

[link]!! Why would they let Lee, who hasn't had a successful non-doc film in years, direct a piece that has no racial subtext, direct a remake of a great example of modern Korean cinema?

You sure you've actually seen a Spike Lee film?

but from what i've heard i'm not sure how Lee will manage to turn this into a "keep the man down" flick. Should be interesting.
