Spoiler: How the Terminator Genesis screenplay connects to the original film

05.01.2014

TERMINATOR: GENESIS is now filming and while we have very little details to go on about the film, we do know that it will directly connect to James Cameron's original film but will also serve as a sort of reboot to the franchise. Planned as a trilogy, TERMINATOR: GENESIS will return to the story of Sarah Connor, John Connor, and Kyle Reese while also including TEMINATOR 2 character Miles Dyson. Well, his son at least. But, with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as the titular robot, how will his aged appearance work into the script?

Drew McWeeny over at HitFix shared some insight based on a draft of the screenplay he has read that has the film connecting directly via a memorable scene from THE TERMINATOR.

There is a scene in the script where, literally, we see the scene from the first TERMINATOR film where Arnold steps out, the punks threaten him, he rips Bill Paxton's heart out and takes his clothes and wanders off. And as soon as that scene ends, another Arnold Schwarzenegger who is older and beared and a very different version of the Terminator walks in from the side and plays another scene right at the scene of that first incident.

Despite McWeeny incorrectly saying it was Paxton who had his heart ripped out (duh, it was Brian Thompson! Everyone knows that!), this is a very intriguing way of connecting the films. Much like J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, this would allow an alternate timeline to be created without erasing the continuity of the original films. How exactly it will be pulled off, assuming it doesn't get changed by the time the film is completed, should make for an interesting result.

On another note, it appears another actor has been cast in TERMINATOR: GENESIS. Bodybuilder Aaron Williamson posted a photo of himself online as half human, half T-800 before taking it down. Williamson did tell Terminator Fans that he has been cast in the film, but it is unknown if it is as a main character or simply a background role.

Whatever the case, TERMINATOR: GENESIS will have a long way to go to prove itself worthy of connecting to the first two films in the series as the third and fourth films have not quite lived up to fan hopes. Directed by Alan Taylor, TERMINATOR: GENESIS stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Dayo Okeniji, J.K. Simmons, Sandrine Holt, Byung-hun Lee, and Jai Courtney. It will open in theaters on July 1, 2015.

Idk y the fuck you ppl think this is a bad idea! It's a great idea IMO. And FYI he doesn't rip bill Paxton's heart out, he rips the guy from cobras heart out. Brian Thompson.

Let it be

To be honest I loved the first terminator as well as the second one. Still watch them often to this day. I wasn’t crazy about the 3rd and the fourth severs some incredible audio but the story was incomplete and didn’t give fans what they wanted… to see post judgment day and for humans to destroy what cyberdyne has done. They should just leave the series alone and people can enjoy the first 2.

I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty confused as to what direction this movie is going. I thought I read on here that scenes from Terminator 2 were being re-done and with the mix of Miles Dyson son. It feels like a chain of events occur to change the fight for the future. Saying that, I still think its a very cool direction to go for this movie and can't wait to see an official synopsis or pictures for that matter.

People should stop jumping to conclusions and wondering why the old T800 will arrive after the events of T1. Obviously there's a reason behind it otherwise it wouldn't happen.
I, for one, am excited about this different spin on the franchise and looking forward to what T5 has to offer.

Eh. Sounds interesting. It worked for Star Trek, but it doesn't mean that it will here.

Can someone explain this sentence to me?

"And as soon as that scene ends, another Arnold Schwarzenegger who is older and beared and a very different version of the Terminator walks in from the side and plays another scene right at the scene of that first incident."

That doesn't make much sense to me, grammatically.

as soon as that scene ends, another terminator, played by an older, bearded Schwarzenegger, enters the film at the exact same location.

I'll see if I can explain it in one sentence.

It's because he wrote a sentence and then partway through the sentence, when all words were happening including verbs and nouns, he wasn't sure about what the sentence was anymore and then just finished some other sentence at the end of that other sentence that was the first one he started writing, even though the sentence wasn't making sense he wasn't going to read the first sentence anymore.

It's an interesting route they're taking, not sure if they can pull it off but am excited about the interconnecting timeline. Taylor's Thor 2 was a little underwheloming but I think that was due to script issues and a crazy amount of studio tinkering, if the script is as boss as everyone is saying then this could be awesome.

Are you kidding? Thor 2 was probably the best Marvel film to date. You want to talk about script issues, look The Avengers.
