Spoiler: One of Godzilla's monstrous enemies revealed in new toy images

Apr. 17, 2014by: Alex Maidy

It is hard to tell from the media released so far for GODZILLA who the bad guy really is. Traditionally, Godzilla has started as a foe but became the defender of humanity against monstrous foes over the years. In the 1998 version, Godzilla was a misunderstood beast defending it's offspring. But, the newest version from director Gareth Edwards has so far teased massive destruction that all seems to be at the hands of Godzilla himself.

The most recent trailer for GODZILLA hinted at another beast that we only see briefly, like in the screenshot below:

Whatever this monster is, it is clearly not Godzilla. We have heard rumblings that GODZILLA will showcase more than one kaiju for the big guy to face off against and now we have our first clear look at one of them. Total Film posted a trio of images from the merchandising assault about to hit toy stores across the country featuring a kaiju very reminiscent of the beast from CLOVERFIELD.

As you can see in the pictures below, the monster is scaled very close to Godzilla himself but has a very distinct body shape. How and why these other monsters are appearing in the new GODZILLA is still a mystery, but it looks like Edwards and the Legendary Pictures team was not content to pit humanity against the monster but have them witness Godzilla versus enemies of equal stature.

GODZILLA hits theaters on May 16, 2014.

This movie looks great and will likely do big numbers worldwide, the US box office will likely be similar to Pacific Rim though, not stellar.

Must be some human governments captured a 1/2 dead monsters, put some shield on it like Evangelion & use it to stop Godzilla...Evangelion Crossover in the future, maybe...

Well that doesn't look good. I mean it looks kinda alien... so if this is a space monster, way to go. But it just looks unpractical. Small arms, big arms, wing looking arms... Arms as cruches, arms as glowing red things...

THE BEST MONSTER WOULD BE....

Kim Kardashian as BrideZilla which all the tabloid shows are saying these days. However, Godzilla looks killer, metal and beyond expectations. I retract my rolling eyes when I heard about the reboot/new movie.

You should probably stop rolling your eyes before you retract them or you might jam up the mechanism. I speak from experience.

The term 'kaiju' existed long before Pacific Rim and was started by Godzilla to begin with. It's as much as a genre name as 'rom-com', so get over it.
As for the alien looking monster, I get all Evangelion-y vibe from its black and red design.

Funny, when I was growing up, before any fanboy can look things up online, when the original godzila movies were playing on tv on saturday mornings, nobody was throwing the word kaiju around, that term is relatively new with fanboys trying to sound like they know something more than everybody else.

Ehh so what. If you only ever watched Django movies, you might never know that a whole genre called 'westerns' exist. The same goes with Godzilla movies and the whole kaiju genre.

Bullshit. The monster genre was always the Monster Genre. In Japan, monster translates as Kaiju. So Japan called it the same thing as everyone else. The monster genre was not invented by Japan, nor did they invent the giant monster attacking a city. Kaiju is a buzz word that popped up when Anime became big in the US, and uber-geeks started using select Japanese words instead of English words.

The Western genre is called the western genre all around the world. We don't call it the 'Seibu no'

Stop with the kaiju nonsense!

God, I thought after all the Pacific Rim hype I would never hear that term again.

Ignorant, term has been around long before Pacific Rim. Heard it in the late 80's/ early 90's as a japanese term for Giant Monster movies. 20 years isn't "recent" kids.

Good to see that Godzilla is rocking the 6-pack abs. So many actors at his age let themselves go between gigs.

Where's Cloverfield 2?

This kaiju definitely resembles the beast from Cloverfield which makes me wish we got a sequel for that more and more. Hopefully it'll come out of nowhere similar to how the original was done. Godzilla still looks amazing nonetheless.

That does look cooler than the trailer.....

I was concerned about the weird head and glowing eyes from the trailer.....it looked very unnatural and almost robotic. This looks really cool and different from anything we've seen. I like it!

Why is Godzilla's head so small? Looks ridiculous. If it were a little bigger and his snout a little longer, he'd be perfect. More like a T-rex and less like a .....whatever that is.

This Godzilla shoots fireballs from its mouth and doesn't eat fish exclusively. Who cares how small it is, it's still frickin' huge and deadly. You want crazy big head Godzilla? Go watch the Roland Emmerich version.

The plastic probably isn't helping, but it looks robotic, like maybe a mech or something. It kind of looks like it has a predator mask on.

It definitely looks "sleek", for lack of a better term. Not very organic. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it's because of it being a toy.
