Spoiler: Rumored details on Katherine Waterston's Alien: Covenant character

06.10.2016

Alien: Covenant Ridley Scott Katherine Waterston Michael Fassbender Billy Crudup Banner

Story and character details for Ridley Scott's ALIEN: COVENANT have been hard to come by, however we do know that the film takes place 10 years after the events from PROMETHEUS, with Michael Fassbender reprising his role as David the android, while INHERENT VICE's Katherine Waterston is playing Daniels, the captain of the Covenant spaceship.

Last month we got the first look at Waterston as Daniels, and now The Playlist is claiming that they have some new info on her character. I'd treat this as just a rumor for the time being, but the identity of the character has since been removed from the report at the request of the studio, so there's a very good chance that the site's scoop is legit.

WARNING: Possible spoilers ensue!

Alien: Covenant Still

According to The Playlist's sources, Waterston's character is actually Ellen Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) mother. The site also says "It should be noted however that Waterston isn’t the lead of the movie, and it’s an ensemble piece like Prometheus.” What are your thoughts on Waterston possibly playing Ripley's mom in ALIEN: COVENANT?

Production is now underway for ALIEN: COVENANT, which has been set to hit theaters on August 4, 2017.

If this is true, so much for starting off on the right foot.

Geez I hope this is not true

Otherwise, what a loose thread trying to tie a character in with he original.

The only concern I have is that if Ripley isn't born yet in this movie, it gives her instant plot armor.

I hope the writers aren't that lazy

This is a massive universe, what would be the chances that Ripley's mother comes into contact with the Xenomorphs, then, eventually, her daughter in four follow-ups? I wouldn't be surprised if David is Ripley's father in some stupid way.

I loved playing Ripley's daughter in the latest game... but this is just dumb

So THREE generations of this family have gone up against aliens??? If it's not Ripley, then nobody should really care. This just feels like a weird easter egg more than anything...

That's all they can come up with? Her mother?? So everything is connected and Ellen Ripley didn't get in contact with that xenomorph by accident, it's all fate? Feels like the Star Wars Prequels to me.

I don't think this necessarily means the entire franchise is some destiny fueled story. I'd say it's more like coincidence. An oddly specific coincidence mind you...

It wasn't an accident in the first movie, it was an intentional screw-over by the android. Remember? So it would be pretty easy to retcon that Bishop personally chose the whole crew (which I'm pretty sure he did anyway), and chose Ripley specifically because they had data on her mother encountering the aliens.

I thought it was more the force awakens. The film industry does well out of making movies 'familiar' with shoe horned plot devices
