Spoilers: Marvel's Kevin Feige talks GOTG 2 plot, Thanos, Nebula and more

Aug. 6, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

It appears most of you have already seen GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but there are a few spoilers in Kevin Feige's recent conversation with IGN. Feige also talks a bit about possible plans for the sequel, so just a heads up if you don't want to know anything about the next movie.

Towards the end of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, it was revealed Chris Pratt's Star-Lord is only half-human, and his dad is an alien. IGN wanted to know if his father and his identity will play a big part in the sequel.

I think it's pretty important. I think there's a reason we seeded it at the very end of the film like that. I think that would certainly be part of a next Guardians adventure. Certainly, that would be part of it.

Kevin Feige goes on to say the identity of Star-Lord's father won't be revealed in any of the Marvel movies being released before GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2.

I think that's pretty important for James [Gunn] and would be appropriate in a [Guardians movie]. I don't think you'd spoil that in Cap 3.

Karen Gillan's Nebula managed to survive in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and Kevin Feige says he'd like to bring her back for another movie.

I would say any character that doesn't overtly perish is certainly fair game to come back. If people know the comic lore, Nebula has a lot of varying different roles to play over the course of a lot of different titles in the comics. We have somebody like Karen, and you have a look that is so weird and so great. I think that's something we'd all like to see again.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY gave us a first look at Josh Brolin's Thanos, but he really didn't do too much. IGN wanted to know if we'll get a taste of just how powerful the supervillain is prior to THE AVENGERS 3, since he likely won't have a huge role in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

That is an excellent point to make. I don't know. The truth is, anything I say would be a spoiler, frankly, on that. I don't think it's required. I think you could go right into a Thanos-centered movie and tell the audience anything you need to know. But the fun of our universe is that the characters can pop up in multiple franchises, so... perhaps. It is a good question.

Finally, Feige was asked what an Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy team-up would look like, and if the two teams would get along.

You know, the fun about The Avengers, as we we're gearing up to that, was 'how would Tony Stark deal with goody two-shoes Steve Rogers in World War II? What would Tony Stark think of a Norse god who wields a hammer? The brilliance of Joss [Whedon] was having fun with that. So who knows if and when these guys would ever connect, but it is fun thinking about, how would Steve Rogers react to Rocket? Or, you're right, Drax couldn't even have a conversation with Tony Stark! [Laughs] I have a theory that the more time Drax spends with Peter Quill, the more he's going to start to learn, perhaps, that people aren't always as literal as his species would assume.

I think GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has opened a lot of doors for Marvel in terms of some of the more cosmic and/or quirky stuff from the comics possibly appearing in future movies from the studio. Very excited to learn more about Marvel's plans for their Phase 3 films.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 will be in theaters on July 28, 2017.

How EPIC would it be to see Tony and Pete go at it I. a battle of smart assery and witty snark remarks. I can see it now. Robert and Chris would vibe off each other so well on screen without ever skipping a beat. The charisma would just ooze off the screen. And I think it's pretty obvious they wouldn't trust each other at first bu would inevitably team up to defeat a common foe. Can you imagine a conversation between Hulk and Groot or Thor and Drax? Not to mention some hilarious back and forth

Imagine my disappointment when Thanos actually looked like the comics and wasn't a big cloud or had his mouth sewn shut......

Like I said before, Captain America 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 have the most to live up to at this point.

I would assume Thanos wouldn't pop up again until Thor 3, considering that Thor's stories take place in other realms and that's where Thanos is currently residing at the moment.

But Avengers 3, HAS to have the Avengers, and Guardians joining up with one another. Based off both team's films success, it's a no brainer at this point.

If the Guardians and Avengers don't combine for AVENGERS 3 to combat Thanos, it would be such a missed opportunity.

I agree it's fun to think about but Guardians being in Avengers 3 seems to forced. This isn't Avengers and other Super Hero teams. Finish the first Avengers trilogy before teaming them up. Plus I'd rather see new Avengers in #3, we got 3-4 new ones in 2, all great choices and well cast. I'd like to see that continue with Avengers 3.

"but Guardians being in Avengers 3 seems to forced."

The main villain in Avengers 3 is going to be Thanos. Thanos was all over the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and will probably be all over GotG 2. How is that forced?

CHRIST! The film just came out 3 days ago and Marvel is already discussing plots for the sequel. They are completely removing the anticipation aspect for a movie to come out and making it feel more like we are being bombarded by flies instead.

And what did you get from the plot of the sequel from above. James Gunn has already said he is working on the sequel. They have already announced a release date. At least it isn't coming out in a rushed format and I fully expect to be thoroughly surprised when it eventually comes out like I was with the first one.
