SPOILERS: So, just who is the wicked witch in Sam Raimi's Oz The Great And Powerful?

Feb. 19, 2013by:

MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!  Look, I doubt you clicked on this with the intention of NOT being spoiled, but I have to reiterate just in case.  The pics below will spoil the reveal of the Wicked Witch in OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, so turn back now if you wish to keep your mind clear of the pointy-nosed villain.

Okay, so if you're sticking around then you know what you're in for.  These three pics show, quite clearly, who the Wicked Witch of Sam Raimi's Oz The Great And Powerful is.  If there's any doubt after seeing the first two images, the third tells all.  The marketing for the film has made a habit of trying to deflect your expectations, especially with Rachel Weisz's Evanora standing atop the castle at the end of the trailer and sending forth her monkey army.  Then, there's the TV spot that poses the question.  Although many have said it's obvious, based on the three witches appearances or the source material (which I've never read), I've never been so sure that it was a foregone conclusion.

She'll swallow your soul!:

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, and Joey King reveals all on March 8, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Does seeing these pics change your mind about seeing the film in theaters?

3 things

1- Even with all that stuff on her face, Mila is still the hottest of the 3

2- Said it before, say it again. It was easy as hell to determine this, who would you rather crush with a house Mila or Rachel? No brainer, Rachel

3- This doesn't change anything for me, if at all more curiousity as to how MIla turns green?

re: point 3 - emerald poisoning. it's a serious problem in Oz if you don't drink enough water, which is kind of an issue for her.

Thank you so much for putting the spoiler block! Unfortunately someone elsewhere already ruined it for me but it's nice to know that we can trust JoBlo.com not to spoil things. Kudos!

That red ring is visible in the trailer on Theodora's hand. It's visible on the Wicked Witch in later promotional images.

It's cool that there is official confirmation, but this was more or less known at this point. This movie has gone from one I had no interest in at all when hearing of the premise to one I am now quite looking forward to.

She may be as green as the hulk but I would still hit it.

Kind of already knew this with all the black she had on and the way the trailer set things up. Still iffy on this film, but I have hope that the actors involved will save it from being another Wonderland.

Had hopes for this until I saw it was unnecessarily composed of rubbery CGI. Id hope that some one like Raimi would go old school with practical hand made effects. You can tell when a studio is genuily shilling trash or making a sincere attempt by it's cheap cinematography and special effects. Unfortnately this looks too much like another Disney and Spencer Gifts marketing team pairing just like the dismal Alice In Wonderland.

Meh

You know what made The Wizard of Oz so great? It's outstanding story and its numerous PRACTICAL effects. There were a few film tricks here and there, but for the most part, everything was practical. Sure the sets looked like sets...But they were awesome!! This movie appears to be 98.6 % CGI. I think James Franco's performance might even be CGI . This film does not look good, Everyone will take their kids to see it, it will make a profit, and subsequently they will make another crappy Oz

I am 100% with you!

Even if it turns out to be good (slim chances I would think) I will not be paying to see this movie. can't stand those blue screen cgi heavy movies. I can understand that in 2013 movies are made differently than back when the origina Oz was made, but the people making those new movies have to learn to BALANCE cgi with practical sets and effects!

I'm 33. The Wizard Of Oz sits in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. This doesn't look like Oz in any way. The Wicked Witch looks horrible!! And don't get me started on the overall look of the movie.
Back when the original was made most will say the backgrounds looked as fake as they do in this new one. Back then they used paintings and sets, nowadays they use blue screens and cgi. Both look fake, but back then it at least looked like it had heart and spirit, if you catch what I'm trying to

I'm 37 - and The Wizard of Oz is an adaptation (and not even the first) of one novel in a series. I'm all ears for the virtues of early color films with handmade effects vs. today's CGI - but this isn't even a retelling of the same story. This is a Wizard origin story. If there were only one OZ book, I'd see being more protective, but there's plenty out there. It's like bemoaning the Quantum of Solace wasn't faithful to Dr. No.
