Update: The title for Avengers 4 may have been revealed early

Update: Director James Gunn spoke with Yahoo!, saying that Zoe Saldana simply just "misspoke."

It’s not the title…My guess is that Zoe just misspoke. I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying Infinity Gauntlet instead of Infinity War.

**POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW!! WARNING WARNING**

I cannot stress the above warning enough. You like everything being kept a mystery for you, please turn back now, for I cannot guarantee your mental safety. Your mind may easily explode.

Cool. Anyway, just yesterday we reported that Kevin Feige said they won’t reveal the title of the fourth AVENGERS film, simply because it would act as a spoiler for INFINITY WAR.  He has kept his word, but someone else may have let something split. While talking on the red carpet with the BBC at a GUARDIANS premiere, Zoe Saldana discussed their shooting schedule for WAR, and in a brief bout of word spillage brought up the fourth films subtitle.

Proceed with caution. In fact, here’s that nifty INFINITY WAR video one last time to act as a stopper. Beyond its goodness spoilers reside.

Alright, here is it:

We’re in the middle of it, I think that the Guardians just shot their part when it comes to Infinity War’s, like, the first part. And we all have to go back for Gauntlet later this year.

So, if Saldana’s words are hint at any sort of truth (which they could or could not), it’s that we can speculate the fourth AVENGERS movie is titled AVENGERS: INFINITY GAUNTLET, or some variation of that. What lends credence to her words regards another report we did that said the final two movies would be shooting separately, with the fourth film starting later this year. .

Now, some of you may be a bit underwhelmed by all the warnings, but Feige was right, this does spoil things a bit. It hints at where the third film goes, and how it all ends. It may not hint exactly how it all happens (which is the only part that matters), but the ending can certainly be visualized now.

I will not toot any sort of horn, as I conveniently cannot not remember for the life of me which story I said this in, but in the past I did share my feelings about how I thought this would be the angle the AVENGERS movies played out in. In WAR it’s all about Thanos hunting the remaining Infinity Stones, with our heroes fighting to stop him. Obviously, they fail (resulting in some casualties, maybe), and four is all about stopping Thanos, now in possession of the full Infinity Gauntlet. Think HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, wherein Part 1 is all about Voldemort getting the Elder Wand, it ending with him raising it to the sky in apocalyptic victory. That has to be the dorkiest paragraph I’ve ever written.

What I’m getting at is that the title and the implications coming from it make sense, as it seems like plotting the next two films this way is the only way to go. You can’t shoot your load all at once, having Thanos tear s**t down with the gauntlet all in INFINITY WAR, and have four be about the Avengers having serious PTSD and war nightmares. Gotta build up to it, have a doom-laden ending, and then have four be a brawl to end all brawls. I can dig it, even though this means WAR may feel more like a prelude than anything else. But Feige has said they’re completely different movies, so maybe they found a way to make it feel like its own film. A speculator’s work is never done.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives May 4, 2018, and AVENGERS 4 after that on May 3, 2019.
