Update: The title for Avengers 4 may have been revealed early

04.26.2017

Update: Director James Gunn spoke with Yahoo!, saying that Zoe Saldana simply just "misspoke."

It’s not the title...My guess is that Zoe just misspoke. I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying Infinity Gauntlet instead of Infinity War.

**POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW!! WARNING WARNING**

I cannot stress the above warning enough. You like everything being kept a mystery for you, please turn back now, for I cannot guarantee your mental safety. Your mind may easily explode.

Cool. Anyway, just yesterday we reported that Kevin Feige said they won’t reveal the title of the fourth AVENGERS film, simply because it would act as a spoiler for INFINITY WAR.  He has kept his word, but someone else may have let something split. While talking on the red carpet with the BBC at a GUARDIANS premiere, Zoe Saldana discussed their shooting schedule for WAR, and in a brief bout of word spillage brought up the fourth films subtitle.

Proceed with caution. In fact, here’s that nifty INFINITY WAR video one last time to act as a stopper. Beyond its goodness spoilers reside.

Alright, here is it:

We’re in the middle of it, I think that the Guardians just shot their part when it comes to Infinity War’s, like, the first part. And we all have to go back for Gauntlet later this year.

So, if Saldana’s words are hint at any sort of truth (which they could or could not), it’s that we can speculate the fourth AVENGERS movie is titled AVENGERS: INFINITY GAUNTLET, or some variation of that. What lends credence to her words regards another report we did that said the final two movies would be shooting separately, with the fourth film starting later this year. .

Now, some of you may be a bit underwhelmed by all the warnings, but Feige was right, this does spoil things a bit. It hints at where the third film goes, and how it all ends. It may not hint exactly how it all happens (which is the only part that matters), but the ending can certainly be visualized now.

I will not toot any sort of horn, as I conveniently cannot not remember for the life of me which story I said this in, but in the past I did share my feelings about how I thought this would be the angle the AVENGERS movies played out in. In WAR it’s all about Thanos hunting the remaining Infinity Stones, with our heroes fighting to stop him. Obviously, they fail (resulting in some casualties, maybe), and four is all about stopping Thanos, now in possession of the full Infinity Gauntlet. Think HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, wherein Part 1 is all about Voldemort getting the Elder Wand, it ending with him raising it to the sky in apocalyptic victory. That has to be the dorkiest paragraph I’ve ever written.

What I’m getting at is that the title and the implications coming from it make sense, as it seems like plotting the next two films this way is the only way to go. You can’t shoot your load all at once, having Thanos tear s**t down with the gauntlet all in INFINITY WAR, and have four be about the Avengers having serious PTSD and war nightmares. Gotta build up to it, have a doom-laden ending, and then have four be a brawl to end all brawls. I can dig it, even though this means WAR may feel more like a prelude than anything else. But Feige has said they’re completely different movies, so maybe they found a way to make it feel like its own film. A speculator’s work is never done.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives May 4, 2018, and AVENGERS 4 after that on May 3, 2019.

It looks like Gunn misread Zoe's comments.

Gunn talks like Zoe thinks Infinity War is Infinity Gauntlet, but Zoe said they're working on Infinity War at the moment and will return for Gauntlet later.

Barely a spoiler really, if that turns out to be the title.
Making Thanos a credible villain is their real challenge here, given that everything's been building up to this. Hopefully they'll find a good way to delve into his back story and motivation which, frankly, we've not had anything much of yet beyond "purple guy wants power stones".

If it's true, it makes logical sense and is completely expected based on how we'd expect the story to go. That said, it's entirely possible the second movie is being shot under a working title just in case one of the many actors predictably (as above) let something slip

Thought this was already kinda known, seeing how we already had a look at Thanos grabbing the gauntlet in one of those credits scenes. But yeah, gotta agree that it's pretty obvious most of the regulars are done for. With the amount of money they're commanding and Marvel movies pretty much guaranteeing success with lesser knows they'll probably head the way that the comics went with all the drastic changes.

Didn't this essentially leak with the original Avengers sequels titles?

Wasn't originally announced as Avengers Infinity War 1 & 2? The logical assumption being part 1 - Thanos gathering the stones then part 2 - fighting a fully armed Thanos.

Seems like much ado about nothing.

Not internet shattering news here, but I'll be really interested to see who's contract won't be renewed after the fourth film.

I think it's a safe bet that lots and lots of Avengers are going to die in these two movies.

It's as a big a spoiler as if it were titled: Thanos Is Purple

Not much of a spoiler, just disappointing that we have to wait for the second part to see the gauntlet in full use...

Not much of a spoiler. I think everyone pretty much figured that Thanos will complete the Gauntlet eventually.

It'll be interesting to see exactly when and where the Guardians show up in this. Will they spend the majority of the first film tracking Thanos to earth and arriving by the end of the film to help the Avengers or are they going to face Thanos first in space and get their ass' handed to them only for a rematch on earth?

And as much as I hate it, there has to be casualties in the first film to carry over the dread going into the next entry. And the two with the biggest impact would be either

It would be really exciting to see how the team would move forward into Guantlet if they were to lose one and/or both.

Too be honest, I really don't see how Gauntlet is a spoiler for the first film. A lot of people had already speculated this name in the past.

I think Infinity War will end with Thanos getting the final Stone and in the last moments of the movie he lays waste to the Avengers & Guardians and pretty much destroys Earth. Then it'll say "To Be Continued". .

But if that's how Avengers 3 ends, then what happens to Ant-Man 2 and Captain Marvel? They both take place on a postapocalyptic Earth? They're both technically prequels that take place *before* the events of Infinity War? I don't really see how Infinity War could possibly end so definitively and have those follow-up films make any sense.

Actually MrSA, I DO think, AM&W will take place prior to IW and will end with the characters arriving to help the Avengers. But CM could take place between the two films, with Carol Danvers getting her powers during or at the end of IW, then having her first adventure prior to being involved in IG... Or she could get them at the beginning of IW, she then disappear from the movie. CM then, takes place DURING IW, as a parallel story, and she arrives at the beginning of IG...
