SPOILERS: What are Marvel's future plans for the Hulk in the next two phases of the cinematic universe?

Feb. 4, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Potential SPOILERS are rampant in this article.  If you're a spoiler nazi and don't want to know anything about anything then it goes without saying that this isn't the place for you.  We have plenty of other articles for you to enjoy that will keep your movie virginity intact. For all others, you're in the right spot.

So, Elmayimbe over at Latino Review has been teasing a scoop for a while now and delivered on his reveal tonight.  The reveal in question involves our favorite scene-stealing green goliath from last summer's THE AVENGERS, The Hulk.  Obviously, we can't confirm or deny anything said, so take it with a grain of salt until it's officially confirmed by the Marvel brain trust.

Now, we've heard the chatter about Guillermo Del Toro reviving the Hulk in a new TV series, but given the amount of projects on his plate, it's unlikely that will gain any traction for a good while. However, with the massive success of the Hulk's appearance in THE AVENGERS (finally, after two damn movies), his popularity soared, which has likely led to Marvel's restored faith in the character's viability at the box office.

LR is reporting that Marvel's big plans for the Hulk take shape at the end of THE AVENGERS 2, which will see Hulk go on some kind of rampage, which in turn causes the Illuminati, a secret group of Marvel characters including Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Namor, Black Bolt, Reed Richards, and Professor X (expect that line-up to change, though, as some of those are Fox-owned characters), to exile the Hulk into outer space as a means to keeping him from doing further damage to Earth.  That's right, for those keeping up with the comics, this is the very premise of Planet Hulk, the story arc that kind of relaunched Hulk into the comics universe with a bang after years of dwindling sales.

Naturally, this will lead to, you guessed it, a PLANET HULK movie.  Leaping even further into Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this opens the door for the Hulk to return in THE AVENGERS 3, which would be a psuedo adaptation of World War Hulk, the follow up story to Planet Hulk.  This arc saw the return of a really pissed off Hulk who vowed to destroy those that sent him into exile, resulting in some seriously bloody throwdowns.

So, to recap, we're potentially looking at the Hulk being shipped off to outer space exile at the end of THE AVENGERS 2 leading to a new Hulk film, likely titled PLANET HULK, and then the Hulk returning to Earth for a massive showdown in THE AVENGERS 3.

If all of this turns out to be true then I'm beyond stoked.  I think this is the most sensible transition for the Hulk on the big screen and opens up the floodgates to expanding the Marvel cinematic universe in BIG ways.  The PLANET HULK animated film is actually really good and the comics it's based on are some of the best stories the Hulk has ever been featured in.  True or not, this is one of the best directions Marvel could go with the character.

You can check out Elmayimbe's full report here

Currently, THE AVENGERS 2 is slated for release on May 1, 2015.

I think it could be a neat idea if the Marvel films can successfully implement the idea of having a film that takes place entirely on an alien world. What Marvel has been able to do so far is tell great stories of it's characters on a human level. All the characters have been human and all the stories have mostly taken place on Earth. The idea of pretty much an entire film taking place on another planet amidst alien characters might not go over so well. However, if they do this storyline, it

However, if they do this storyline, it could lead into World War Hulk, which would be really cool.

Planet Hulk would be cool to see, but World War Hulk was terrible.

Awesome Idea! Ulthough....

I was also kinda hoping for at least one more Pre-Planet-Hulk Hulk movie with Ruffalo's Banner up against The Leader (set up in Incredible Hulk). Especially because they finally nailed the dumb brutishness of the Hulk, which is what I think everyone really liked about him. But Planet Hulk would still be amazing to see on the big screen. If its true that is.
Also... (SPOILERS)...

Does this mean we'll be seeing Beta Ray Bill in a Thor movie soon???? Since Silver Surfer is owned by

Makes total sense actually since it's the only way for the Hulk to get another solo movie, so if this is indeed happening then I am totally excited for the next round of movies Marvel has. The way they are handling all this is just genius.

Planet Hulk by choice

Since space will be an obvious factor in Avengers 2, I would like to see Hulk choosing to leave Earth for the greater good. Either Bruce Banner or a self-aware Hulk chooses to strand himself on another planet. One where his strengths and abilities blend in better and for the opportunity to be the hero that planet needs. This would be a similar ending to "Seven Samurai". This would give the rest of the Marvel films as reason for why the Hulk isnt there, as well as setting up a Planet Hulk solo

Planet Hulk is a stupid Storyline. I like my Hulk oldschool. Bruce Banner on the run, looking for a cure. More Drama - less CGI Overkill.

Meh

I have never followed the comics but the biggest flaw in this seems to be that Hulk is well...Hulk more than he is Banner. Hulk is an aspect of Banner that appears only briefly, he doesn't strut around spouting exposition and having deep thoughts, he calms down he goes back to Banner.

I just don't get the premise of a Hulk movie that is all Hulk no Banner.

"That's my secret...I'm always angry" :(

So with those words spoken in The Avengers, Bruce Banner effectvely admits that he can control when he decides to turn into the Hulk. Which makes the character NOT "The Hulk" as written in the comics, and certainly offers a completely opposite take on a Hulk that rampages so out of control he needs to be shipped to outer space.

Like the idea of Planet Hulk, but not necessary World War Hulk. Then the Civil War story arc would be more interesting imo. Overall it does sound intriguing!

Planet Hulk is a good idea for at least two reasons. One, Planet Hulk would be a different setting than one seen before. Hell, Disney could simply reuse the John Carter sets and CGI backgrounds. Maybe, they aren't in use. LOL. Two, the Hulk needs another solo movie like his popular buddies Cap, Iron Man, and Thor. If Ant-Man gets a solo shot, Hulk needs one too.

Its funny you say that cuz I was thinking the same thing last night when I read this on another site, hulk on the set of john carter, which is basically a great stand in for the planet hulk was on for the storyline.

Sounds good. I've always enjoyed the notion of having HULK be the bad guy purely because of his unstoppable nature. I think that storyline could work well, but they have to keep the sympathy of Banner in the mix. I don't think an audience would last long on pure HULK.

I think it sounds like a great storyline to set up the Hulk for Avegers 3 and I like the fact that Avengers 2 would end on a dark note with the Hulk being exiled into space after the Avengers winning another battle. But maybe this time things just go dramatically wrong with Hulk being the main reason why.

I would also love to see a Planet Hulk film. Thought the animated film looked great and it would be great build up to see a pissed off Hulk return for Avengers 3. I really really hope this

I kinda...

...have mixed feelings about this. I wish they would kind of do a Hulk movie before they may send him off to outer space. Then again, I'm happy they are going to make a Hulk movie in general. For some reason I really believe that we're going to see a Bruce Banner cameo in at least a couple movies before The Avengers 2.

SPOILERS

Also, don't forget, there is eventually a civil war to be had. Hulk coming back for revenge could be beneficial to Capt. America when he goes head to head with

I enjoyed reading Planet Hulk, but it would be better to give the characters involved a bit more time in various movies before launching into that. If they were going down the Illuminati setup route it'd be a shame to do it with different characters. It was such a strong dynamic in the comics - that these "smart" heroes thought they knew what was best (and indeed which ones disagreed with the plan) it was just a really interesting way of using the characters. Like grelber37 said, though,

Like grelber37 said, though, without those elements there is a distinct John Carter vibe to Planet Hulk, and whereas I enjoyed John Carter in many respects, I'm not sure Disney might want to head back in that direction so soon.

Hulk like

That plot scenario really sounds ambitious and interesting. I guess after two Hulk movies, Marvel may be wanting to do something completely different on their third take for him.

Planet Hulk was like John Carter on Steroids, so I can totally get with them going in this direction. BTW screw the Illuminati ! With the exception of Namor and Iron Man I hated everyone in that damn group!

Not gonna work. As least with the exact same premise. Hulk can't be a bigger character than Bruce Banner. Hulk really isn't that interesting, Whedon knew that, saved Hulk for a few good moments, but basically did a better job writing Banner than either of the two Hulk movies. In order for Planet Hulk to work, you have to Banner as the main character, but then it would probably just be a John Carter clone.

I remember reading Planet Hulk and thinking how awesome it would be as a summer blockbuster movie. Gladiator with aliens, what could be better? Now they need to follow up Guardians of the Galaxy, with Annhialation, and I'll be very happy indeed.

THere's no Banner in Planet Hulk and World War Hulk. Although these stories have an intelligent speaking Hulk so who knows how they will spin it. This could just all be feelers they are throwing out to gauge fan reaction before commiting to a story.

they should take a que from the new hulk comic, and make banner/hulk a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Send him on missions and stuff that require the hulk to SMASH!

Sadly not going to happen

Firstly, it's too like John Carter so the Execs will get cold feet before a greenlight.
Secondly, they won't think it's mainstream enough to do well (especially as neither of the first two Hulk films did that well).
