Stallone to return for Expendables 2 but not as director

Mar. 9, 2011by:

Millennium Films, the production company behind THE EXPENDABLES, is moving forward with a sequel to last year's surprise hit with one catch: Sylvester Stallone won't be writing or directing the second time around. Fret not, Stallone will still star in the movie and would serve as producer. In fact, it's Stallone who's meeting with potential directors to take over the reigns of EXPENDABLES 2.

A script for the movie has apparently already been written by David Agosto and Ken Kaufman, the duo behind such genre classics as CURIOUS GEORGE. Where the sequel goes remains to be seen but Stallone has been teasing the return of Bruce Willis and a role for Jean Claude Van Damme since the release of the first film.

While the original film was released by Lionsgate, it was essentially produced independently, as the sequel will be.

I still love Stallone's idea for a fifth RAMBO that would have had the John Rambo character skipping over into another genre like sci-fi. That project never got off the ground by why not here? Wouldn't you love to see THE EXPENDABLES VS. JASON or something like that? At the end of the day, ALIENS was basically a movie with a crew of "expendables" killing aliens, why not Stallone and his crew? I live to see JCVD kick a monster in the face.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. But where should EXPENDABLES 2 take the boys? And should Arnold Schwarzenegger make this his first major role since leaving public office?

Not sure how this makes me feel. I don't think there is a legit American action director to take over.

Martin Campbell

I'd love to see him take Expendables to the next level.

Get John Woo back to Hollywood with this as director, add Chow Yun Fat as the villain, and make what the first part wasn't: an awesome action film.

Awesomee idea for Expendables sequel....

Like you said, for the second maybe the crew could fight aliens...then for the third they could fight zombies, fourth vampires and so on. I fucking love that idea, but I don't see it happening.

I'd suggest maybe Louis Leterrier, Nimrod Antal or (long-shot) Zack Snyder - he may love his slow-mo a bit too much but he can shoot action!

Still yet to see the first one although it's been high in my Lovefilm queue for a while now so hoping it'll come through my door sometime soon-ish...

Great point about Aliens. It's my favorite out of the franchise, but my only complaint is that too many marines die too quickly and only had a few short minutes to be as memorable as they were.

Speaking of which, Michael Biehn should be in this... Johnny Ringo FTW!

As long as Stallone is IN it (which he is), I really don't care who directs it. Sometimes franchises can actually benefit quite a bit whenever a different director is used for each installment.

I really enjoyed the Expendables so as long as it's good I don't care if the "Justin Bieber flick" guy directs it.

Yes!

This is great news. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Stallone fan, but I felt The Expendables was let down by his writing & direction. I really hoped he would step aside for the sequel, but never thought that would actually happen! Shows what a savvy guy he is.
