Excelsior! Stan Lee thinks a Silver Surfer movie is inevitable

Jul. 3, 2013by:

Silver Surfer

Stan Lee pretty much confirmed a movie based on Black Panther was in the works while at the Comic Con in New York over the weekend and it may not have been something Marvel wanted revealed at the time but really are they going to try to tell Stan Lee what to do or say? I didn't think so.

MTV Geek caught up with Lee at the same Comic Con and asked him if there was a chance Silver Surfer could get his own movie. The character is one of Stan Lee's favorites and he said that with all the comic book adaptations in the works it's only a matter of time before Silver Surfer gets a standalone film:

Well, let me put it to you this way: Back at Marvel, they are frantically looking for what is the next one they’re going to do. There is no way they won’t eventually do a Silver Surfer movie. It may not be for a few years because they’re thinking and working on Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy. Everything we have. And the fans seem to want all of them. But they’ll get around to a Silver Surfer feature because he’s a wonderful character.

Marvel doesn't own the film rights to Silver Surfer so unfortunately he won't be a part of their cinematic universe. But it isn't hard to imagine Fox creating their own movie universe for the comic book properties they own such as the Fantastic Four and X-Men. I don't have nearly as much faith in Fox as I do Marvel when it comes to comic book movies at this point but if done right a film universe containing the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer could be spectacular. Just make sure Galactus isn't a f*cking cloud this time.

Extra Tidbit: What villains would you want to see in a standalone Silver Surfer movie?

The question is, how the hell will Marvel wrangle the Silver Surfer away from Fox?? The last thing in the world I want is another shitty attempt to shoehorn him into a stupid Fantastic 4 movie.

No disrespect to the man, but he is talking out of his ass. I think he knows about as much about the executive decisions at Marvel as Dave Thomas's daughter knows about what is going on at Wendy's. Not a lot.

Marvel doesn't even own the rights to the character and Fox is preparing a reboot in the very near future.

If Marvel were building towards something Infinity Gauntlet-esque with Thanos then it'd be a shame if they had to do it without Silver Surfer, but I'm not sure if that's the route they're going. They've not really tried adapting a major comic event or series, so I guess their comics are being more influenced by what they're doing with their movies than the other way around. Sure they're doing a film called Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it'll be a pretty different story to the comic

Sure they're doing a film called Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it'll be a pretty different story to the comic run. Again, it would be nice if this was all leading toward something roughly based on Civil War, but that would take a lot of setting-up and require most of their character rights back to do it justice, so I expect the cinematic Marvel universe to remain quite a different beast to the one portrayed in the comics. Not necessarily a bad thing as long as the films are telling compelling stories with the characters.

Hopefully the Fantastic Four reboot isn't junk

The question is...and I've thought about this on numerous occasions, as my avatar would suggest...is how the crap are you going to tell a Surfer origin tale without just making another Fantastic Four sequel. Sure, you get Shalla Bal and Galactus, but then Surfer is a herald, surfing around and condemning planets to death for quite some time. Only his interaction with FF and Alicia Masters changes his mind and makes him a hero.

The Silver Surfer cartoon doesn't involve the FF at all. So that could be a good start.

Man, I thought that cartoon was the bee's knees back in the day. Tried watching it again when they put it on Netflix and boy howdy, it does not hold up. The deeply introspective psychology is still there, but Norrin sounds like such a bitch when he's 'lamenting'. The traditional animation is bunk too.
Galactus still looks cool. Galactus always looks cool.

The problem is the licensing

So FOX makes a SS film. Is Marvel/Disney really going to "lend" them the Skrulls or some other property to make the film interesting and complex. Probably not. I'm guessing Marv-ney is unhappy about as many properties being out of studio as it is. So what does that leave you with? Silver Surfer and the FF? I just don't see this working very well, unless somehow the rights could be returned.

Fox already has the rights to the Skrulls - they acquired them at the time that they acquired the FF. That's why the Avengers didn't face off against the Skrulls, choosing to fight the Chitauri instead.

Does Fox plan still to offer a Fantastic Four movie in March, 2015? Perhaps, the Silver Surfer would follow that film. Then, to answer the ET, Silver Surfer could meet the Shi'ar in his solo movie. Remember, the Silver Surfer cannot meet Thanos, for the mad Eternal appears in the cinematic Avengers-verse. The Shi'ar could appear in a Silver Surfer movie and in an X-Men movie. If in an X-Men movie, the Shi'ar could play a role in a re-telling of the Phoenix saga. Perhaps, Fox will do all of this

ET: Otherwise, Silver Surfer could face Silver Samurai and Silver Fox from Wolverine movies. It would be a film short.

If the Guardians of the Galaxy get a trilogy, I think the Silver Surfer would make a perfect addition to a third movie to fight Thanos or whoever the villain would be.

The Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer actually looked pretty good. I think they blew their effects budget on getting him done and all the rest of the effects work in the film suffered as a result.

To be fair

Galatus wasn't a cloud, he was a pink energy being. At the end you saw Surfer confront him and you saw pink energy in the shape of his helmet. The Cloud is a replacement for his ship, which is actually a cool idea it visually makes him an unstoppable force of nature. And while Galatus is in reality pure energy and his form is techincally an illusion, I would much prefer him have an actual form like in the comics. Sorry just a pet peeve I have. Also I wouldn't be surpised if Stan Lee is mixing

Maybe this was the film vin diesel met with marvel about. He would be a great silver surfer. However, if marvel doesn't have the rights to the character than that idea could be a long way off.

Don't really know Silver Surfer enough as a character to know if this is good news or not. But I like the idea of Fox creating their own cinematic universe. I don't think they necessarily need to tie FF universe into X-Men. But they could have a universe with Silver Surfer storylines which connect to Fantastic Four storylines, and eventually bring in the Future Foundation for it's own string of movies. On the X-Men side, there are enough titles they can branch off into, they already have

On the X-Men side, there are enough titles they can branch off into, they already have solo Wolverine stories, they can make a spinoff with Havoc for X-Factor, they can have a storyline and bring in Cable and branch him off into his own movies - or even create X-Force. I like that idea for X-Men b/c it allows them to bring in a lot more characters without overloading a single movie, a la DOFP.

Why is Lee saying "There is no way they (Marvel) wont eventually do a Silver Surfer movie"? Has he accidentally let another secret out about property rights...or is he just his usual kid self and talking all kinds of wet dreams' nonsense?

I think he was just going on a tangent and talking about all the possible movies. Even the movies that other studios own the film rights to, I'm sure Marvel is working with them in some capacity for developing those stories. It would be awesome to hear that Marvel is going after buying their film rights back though.

A Silver Surfer movie would be awesome to see. And not just him as a supporting charcacter, but as the lead.

waay before the avengers

I want to say it was Vin Diesel who came out and said they had amazing test footage for a new silver surfer movie (not ff) and that it would change graphics as we know. Did I imagine this?

I would say that Stan Lee is right.......IF Marvel had the rights. I'm pretty sure he's bundled with the Fantastic Four and not one of those weird gray areas like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Otherwise, yeah, clearly Marvel is looking to make a movie out of any title possible
