Stanton talks Mars

Andrew Stanton showed up at the Los Angeles Critics award dinner the other night to accept the Best Picture award for WALL-E (and rightfully deserved). While there he spoke briefly with SciFi about the status of his next movie JOHN CARTER OF MARS. In that interview he reveals the following:

- The movie will NOT be animated but will obviously feature a great deal of CGI. "There are so many creatures and characters that half of it's going to be CG whether you want it to be or not."

- He's already begun talking to actors to star in the film.

- The movie will NOT be a Pixar production but will instead be set up at Disney. Explains Stanton, "Pixar's a brand that you have to trust that's for all ages and this story is not going to be an all-ages film."

The movie isn't set for release until 2012 so it's surprising that Stanton is getting to work so early (especially with casting). He also mentions that he'll keep the movie at a modest two hour length. You can read the full interview over at SciFi Wire.

Live Action!

I'm so glad this will be live action. If you have not read the book...do yourself a favor. Gerard Butler perhaps??

Guys, this makes me ....so happy.

I want either James McCavoy, if he's not too busy with the hobbit or if that tid bit is even true,Or Clive Owen. Josh Holloway would be an excellent fit. I don't know it's a toss up.

Alciblades

Alciblades,

Stanton never said that he is 'distancing' himself from Pixar.

He said that Pixar is strictly for all ages. and it doesnt mean that the 'talent' from Pixar are not involved either. Because they are in some capacity.

Stanton set this up with Disney because (as far as I can tell) Pixar's decided to remain an animation-only division (Brad Bird's live action debut was also going to be a Pixar production, but now it's being made by Touchstone, which is owned by Disney), since Disney/Pixar owns the rights to the story, screenplay, treatment or whatever then it makes sense that he'd stay there.

I was very curious to see whether this would be like action or CGI, the fact that it'll be live action is ansolutely

I was very curious to see whether this would be like action or CGI, the fact that it'll be live action is ansolutely awesome. This just shot way up on my "most anticipated list". As for which actor, ever since I saw the pictures from Doug Liman's new project I've had Sam Rockwell stuck in my head whenever I hear about space movies, and I'm sure he'd be awesome in this also. I agree with outofsight that Ryan Gosling would be a really good choice as well.

Disney = POTC, National Treasure
Pixar = Wall-E, Toy Story

Bad move to distance himself from Pixar, my interest dropped a bit. Still, it's better off than with Jon Favreau at the helm...

JCoM

If I could choose an actor from any given time I would have to say Bruce Cambell during his Briscoe County, jr. hayday...
That would've been fucking perfect casting :-)

But now, with the trend of casting seriously good actors (not that BC isn't) I would have to say Ryan Gosling. He needs to try out the fantasy genre a bit...
