Updated: Star Lord's father has been revealed in this latest rumor

11.24.2015

UPDATE: James Gunn has issued a rebuttle to this scoop, saying that it's false. Read his full statement HERE, but the gist is below:

"All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because, eventually, someone is going to come up with a spoiler that has some truth to it. That said, the rumors surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth. I don’t know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn’t through legitimate sources."

The mystery of Star Lord/Peter Quill's father was teased at the end of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and is sure to be a plot point in the upcoming VOL. 2. Director James Gunn stated that the films would not be following the source material, and now that mystery may have been revealed thanks to Heroic Hollywood. For those of you looking to keep things a surprise, there are some MAJOR SPOILERS regarding Peter Quill's father and his place in the Marvel-verse. You have been warned!

As El Mayimbe reports, Peter Quill's father in the Marvel cinematic universe may be that of Captain Marvel, or rather, Captain Mar-Vell. Read on!

So, a bit of a history lesson for those unfamiliar. The first Captain Marvel, created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in Marvel Super-Heroes #12, was an alien military officer. Captain Mar-Vell, of the Kree Imperial Militia, was sent to observe planet Earth as the Kree were developing technology to travel into space. Mar-Vell eventually allied himself with Earth, and the Kree Empire branded him a traitor. From then on, Mar-Vell fought to protect Earth.

Now, for those of you curious on how this will connect to the Captain Marvel movie featuring Carol Danvers, Mar-Vell will evidently gift superpowers her way. Given that director James Gunn prides himself on the GUARDIANS flicks standing apart from the rest of the Marvel movies, I imagine we may not get too much into the Carol Danvers side of things until her solo flick comes out. In the meantime, this will be a cool way to set up a future superhero, as well as reference an alien race that audiences are familiar with. Here's hoping that Gunn can introduce the type of Kree that seems more like a living, breathing creature rather than CG fodder.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.

It could tie in with whatever their plans are for The Inhumans later if Quill's dad turned out to be The Beyonder. Or, as crazy as this may sound, Vin Diesel. I mean Black Bolt.

I think his dad is the Stranger( first appeared in X-Men #11 (May 1965) myself. Makes more sense. The whole ancient quip made by yondu and nova corps remarks kinda hints at an elder of the universe being star lords pops.

I'm just skeptical of this overall. The few clues that have been laid out do not help to add up to Captain Marvel as Peter Quill's father.
1) Nova says at the end of the movie that Peter is half human and half something ancient the Nova Corp has never seen before. They literally just faced off against a Kree warlord, after signing a peace deal with the Kree. So I'm thinking they'd know about Kree's

2) Yondu mentions his father is a real asshole. Hinting that his father is a villain of sorts. Captain Marvel is heroic, not evil.
3) His mother describes his father as a being of light. That could be construed as anything I guess, but adding in the other clues above doesn't hint at his father being Kree.
4) Ronan was unable to handle the infinity stone himself, meaning that Kree are unable to touch the infinity stone. Peter Quill was the only one capable of handling the stone and resisting it's power, meaning he's something much more akin to the Celestials than Kree.
5) James Gunn has said GOTG2 will be very stand-alone from the rest of the MCU with no ties to the other Marvel properties. Having Captain Marvel as his father would be a pretty significant tie-in to the rest of the MCU with the storyline currently on AOS, and Inhumans and Captain Marvel slated for 2019 releases.

The only way around this is that they make Captain Marvel not a Kree and some other kind of alien being. But even still, what's the point? The character is more important to the origin of Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel than he is to Peter Quill.

They take liberties on specifics

If this is going to be Captain Marvel is the father, they can easily change the Capt M origins. Different species, ancient kree or whatever.

If the kree thing is true, does that mean the terrigen mist is going to give our Star Lord new powers? I kinda find that funny. It would turn GotG into a bridge for Inhumans.

While it's not a bad idea, I agree with everyone below who doubts the rumor. Another reason I have doubts is that James Gunn has been pretty candid in saying that GOTG 2 will be it's own movie, one of the most independant MCU movies to date. If his father really is Captain Marvel, that sounds like a pretty huge connection to not only the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, but Inhumans too. Gunn is usually pretty straightforward.

I'm not buying it

Remember, at the end of the movie, Michael Rooker's character says, "I'm glad we didn't take him to his father. He's a real a*****e!"

To me, that says Peter's dad is a villain; Thanos, if we're looking at a character that's already been introduced.

Doesn't make any sense....

Glenn Close said his father was "something ancient we haven't seen before." How are the Kree something Nova had never seen before, but was ancient (meaning they had been to that sector of the galaxy, but left)?

Not sure i'm buying this.

Sounds good to me if this actually ends up being true. Now cast Kevin Bacon and be done with it.

I think it would be pretty awesome if Mar-Vell sends his powers and possibly memories, Doctor Who-style, to Carol Danvers. Clearly when Peter Quill meets her he will hit on her, but if it is actually his dad in there, that could make for some hilariously uncomfortable moments.
